Music throughout the weekend. “The Beaches”, “The Struts”, “Tremonti”, “Foo Fighters”, “Halestorm”, & “Tesseract”

I didn’t sleep well…..again.  Went to bed at 9:30 pm on Friday, much earlier than usual.  Woke up around 3:00 am to pee & couldn’t fall back asleep.  I think I fell back to sleep around 6:00 am?  I had my breakfast for lunch.  We’re old, we stayed in Saturday night & rented “Life of the Party” on iTunes.

I slept much better Saturday night.  We/I stayed up until 11:30-midnight & got up around 8:30.  Much better if you sleep for that amount of time.

Went to the Rider game, you’re welcome Edmonton, we beat Calgary aka we got this.  Calgary is now 8W – 1L

NOTHING BUT THIEVES

Very new band with only 2 full length albums out.  Both are AWESOME!!!  Their first full length album was released in 2015 & I named it as my favourite album of the year, that album still holds up in my books.  Their second album was released in 2017.  Again it was & still is my favourite album of that year.  They’re not a metal group in the least, I think they’re making FANTASTIC music without a lot of distortion on any instrument & the singer has a REALLY good voice.  When I heard their 1st album, it blew me away & I bought it instantly…

I fell asleep to “A Perfect Circle” the new album “Eat the Elephant”

I exercised to “Tesseract” the album “Sonder”

While I was in the Wascana Rehabilitation Center from early 2009 – July 26th, 2012.  Kim & I met someone we consider a longtime friend, a nurse by the name of Shelda!  She’s really nice & very funny.  She really doesn’t look her age either.  She looks younger than me, but is actually older than both Kim & I.  She called us “You 2 are some of the nicest people I have met!”  I’ll say she’s right on point with Kim, me on the other hand, well she might want to try again.  I can always do better at anything.  She’ll come by on occasion, but she lives outside of Regina.  She’s HILARIOUS also!  I believe she started working in the “Home Care” portion of the Health Region as of sometime in February.

I may not be one of the nicest people kickin’ around, but Shelda is.  Don’t ever mention the Saskatchewan Roughriders around her though because you will be met with “You know what I think of the Riders?  They’re POOP!”  That’s pretty direct quote from her.  I know she has said it to me more than once!

This whole cancer thing worked out pretty good for me, I survived, I’m a little bit different, I’m physically handicapped.  I did meet a lot of cool people to go along with my other friends from my life prior to cancer, B.C. & A.C.  Before cancer & after cancer.  Now that I’m alive & well without a chip on my shoulder, I can laugh about it when I look back at that time of my life.

Truth be told we met a lot of great people while I was sick, doctors, nurses, & special care aids!  I heard one of the many nurses say something to the tune of ‘We don’t do this for the money!’

FINGER ELEVEN & I MOTHER EARTH

These are both my brother’s favourite bands.  When “I Mother Earth” released their 2nd album “Scenery & Fish” we both listened to that CD constantly.  We each had a purchased copy of it.  “Finger Eleven” changed drummer & their name from “Rainbow Butt Monkeys” & were all over Much Music with their 1st single “Above”.  The first time we saw them, they were opening for “I Mother Earth” in 1999.  I Mother Earth had their 2nd singer who recorded the last 2 of 4 albums with them “Blue Green Orange” & “The Quicksilver Meat Dream”.  We saw IME touring for their album “Blue Green Orange” in 1999 with Finger Eleven as their opener.

Tuesday evening they were both in Regina at the Casino!  There was no way I was going to miss this show, with 2 Canadian legends of rock.

“Rainbow Butt Monkeys” tune.  More funky than Finger Eleven.  I should listen to this more often.  Mitch & I really liked this album.  Finger Eleven & “I Mother Earth” are Mitch’s favourite bands, they inspired him to take bass lessons & eventually become an AWESOME guitar player!  I was always a singer first, I grabbed a guitar mostly because it was my security blanket, then it was about filling out the sound.

First single from Finger Eleven was “Above” I believe.

This I Mother Earth song was on Much Music & the local rock radio station in 1999 around the time we saw them in Regina.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SHOW FOR ME!

First thing were the 2 “interpretive dancers” in the audience.  They started on opposite sides of the open floor.  I’m sure they locked eyes across the, now dance floor, & really liked the others moves & lack of rhythm.  Rachel & I weren’t sure if we should watch the bands or the 2 “dancers”?  We both couldn’t stop laughing!

I’m sure if you look up “white men dancing” on google you’ll get a picture or video of the 2 guys.  They were completely sober which made it even funnier!  There’s no way that a drunk person could even consider attempting their moves.

Very poor turn out.  Our balcony seats immediately became floor level seats at a table.  Very pleasant surprise!

Finger Eleven opened the show with “Above” & some of these songs in their set.

I Mother Earth came out after & started their set with “Not Quite Sonic”

I’ll likely never hear this song (below) again live

When I Mother Earth play a popular song, you never hear the radio edited version.  You are almost guaranteed an extra minute live.

Edwin didn’t record the following song & has never tried it live until this tour, some of it was really good & other parts were questionable.

To finish the show, members of both bands hit the stage.  They all did one original song from both bands & a cover song I can’t place.  The chorus sounded familiar though.

The show took me back to 1999 Edgefest & seeing them in Regina together also in 1999.

When I Mother Earth were together & recording albums I saw them twice doing their own show once in 1996 in Saskatoon with Edwin singing.  A second time in Regina in 1999 with Finger Eleven opening for them & IME’s second singer Brian.  I’ve seen them more now that they’ve “broken up” than I ever did when they were recording new music in the ‘90s.  I went to the show with Mitch, Rachel, & Chet!

Great show!  I missed a baseball game for it, but I wasn’t going to miss this show!

I always record “The Ellen Degeneres Show” on CTV, a Canadian feed.  ABC would typically have breaking news of something terrible happening in America.  When Kim & I were in our first house years ago, before I got cancer I switched to CTV to avoid missing the show.  Well on Monday it didn’t work.  A van drove into a crowd killed 9 people & injured 16 others last I heard.  The breaking news recorded instead, about 15 minutes into the show.  Police have captured a suspect.  I believe they may be looking for another.  Either way, it’s a tragedy that can’t be undone.  Is it just me or is the world just turning into a terrible place?

Do you have a question about stage 4 brain cancer?  Ask if you do!

I fell asleep to “Stone Temple Pilots” the album “STP 2018” followed by “Tesseract” the album “Sonder” & finally “A Perfect Circle” the album “Eat the Elephant” this last album is a grower not a shower!

I’m so glad it’s the weekend.  I need a couple of days to rest my body.

Stayed up late to watch the Blue Jays.  They’re currently 13W-6L.  Last year they did not win their 11th game until May, HUGE improvement & younger players coming up from the minor leagues doing REALLY well in the major league.  I hope this is a sign of what we’ll see next year!?  So me on the couch with a gin & sprite & 1 beer.

We’re a bit behind on our DVR though.  Late night talk shows, a couple of Ellen Degeneres shows, & 2 or 3 other shows.  Saturday Kim was doing laundry while we were catching up on our DVR after the day time baseball game.  Very quiet Saturday.

Today is just a normal Sunday for us.  Kim got ahead of the day.  She went grocery shopping on Saturday & already did some of the laundry.  I have to make a juice for the week, & we cleaned off the DVR on Saturday.  One more Blue Jays game today in N.Y. then a day off for the Blue Jays on Monday.

It’s a 162 game season for each baseball team, & I watch as many as possible, which is usually around 120-150 I’m guessing.

ROCK IS NOT DEAD

It’s not a dead genres.  Gene Simmons, KISS, started saying this all over social media, & it’s the biggest pile of manure I have ever heard of.  Maybe KISS’ sales have dropped, guess what?  Everybody else’ sales have dropped because of A) Napster B) iTunes C) All of these hipster streaming sites?  I use iTunes, a few people I know in bands signed to a label tell me they get a significant portion of the money spent on iTunes.  I don’t believe in “free” music & I know I’m not alone.  iTunes isn’t available for just me

“I’ll never pay for an album!  Who would do such a thing?”  You didn’t want to pay for music, but that’s only part of the reason rock music is beaten up right now.  New generation of music fans aka different music for a different generation.  Most teenagers just simply aren’t fans of rock music.  One day some kid will pop out of a garage after hearing a rock album that inspires her/him.

Many people probably don’t want to hear this but “Nickelback” was the next “Nirvana”.  The difference is “Nirvana” inspired others to be creative, “Nickelback” inspired others to create similar music, since they knew “Nickelback” was making good money on that style of music.  I honestly don’t know a teen that likes “Nickelback”.  If “Nickelback” was the next “Nirvana”, I’m sure somebody else will take over as THE rock band of a new generation.  Rock’s not dead it’s just harder to find.  It’s buried under the clutter of Country, EDM, Pop, etc.  It will come back, we just need to be patient & ride out this phase.  Music has always gone through peeks & valleys.  If you like “Nickelback” that’s fine with me.  If you like “Nickelback” because you think it’s badass & you’re a heroin addict, then you have 2 problems!

If rock is dead why do we still have “Pearl Jam”, “Foo Fighters”, “Alter Bridge”, “Alice Cooper”, “Neil Young”, “Rob Zombie”, “Tool”, “A Perfect Circle”, “Chevelle”, “Alice in Chains”, “Big Wreck”, “Royal Blood”, “Queens of the Stone Age”, “Stone Temple Pilots”, “Clutch”, “Bryan Adams”, “Finger Eleven”, “Paul McCartney”, “Eagles of Death Metal”, “Muse”, “Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds”, “Smashing Pumpkins”, “Stone Sour”, “Them Crooked Vultures”, “Greta Van Fleet”, “The Trews”, “Weezer”, “Godsmack”, “Theory of a Deadman”, “Nickelback”, “3 Doors Down” etc.  Sure some of this is older music, but they’re still making rock music.  This list doesn’t even branch out into the metal music out there.

You can say rock is dead, just look a little harder until someone brings it closer to the forefront of music.  I’m not saying everyone will like these groups or even that I do, but there’s a sample of what’s out there.

www.loudwire.com agrees with me.  Long article.

I’ve never heard of this group but I thought this sounded pretty good.  2 full length albums & many singles including Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box” cover

I’ll wait, I just bought 2 albums from iTunes Thursday night.

For me Gene Simmons is very close to the Donald Trump of music.  Not for his musical career & success, but for the slimy money hungry person he is.

I fell asleep to “The Damned Things” the album “Ironiclast”

I exercised to “INXS’” Greatest Hits

Yes, I was in both.  I started University in September of 1998.  I took a year of Engineering, 2nd semester (January of 1999) was for me try & pass the classes I failed terribly, that didn’t happen for me though.  I really had no clue as to what I wanted to do.  I took one more semester starting in September of 1999.  I took random classes to see if something peaked my interest.  Nothing!

I worked at the Delta hotel from 1996 I think all the way through to the first 4 or 5 months of 2001.  My boss at the Delta was very accommodating with my schedule for school.  When I dropped out of university I worked full time, mostly at 5:00 or 6:00 am.  In the summer of 2001 I got a job at The Staples call center.  I had already been accepted to start SIAST in September of 2001.  I worked full time for that summer, then dropped my working hours to part time hours, I think I dropped them to 10 or 15 hours a week?  I know at one point, once I was in SIAST, they wanted part time workers to work a minimum of 20 hours a week.  I couldn’t do that so I quit to focus on school.  Corey McDonald started SIAST in December of 2001.

We bonded very fast for our mutual passion for chicken wings, beer, & guitar/music.  He really got me into heavier music.  I think once he started SIAST there were 5 guys in my class of 30 or so?  Kim was in that class & Corey’s wife Jolene was in that class as well.  Corey & Jolene started dating in late February of 2002.  Kim & I started dating about a week into April of 2002.  I got my first guitar for my birthday in January of 2001.  I was already singing with Dave, Rob, & Rydell in our band in University.

SOUNDGARDEN & PANTERA

University, SIAST, & later on in high school were my years to discover the music I liked & wanted to hear.  Even now, I’m discovering new bands.  Being in a band was always a great way to discover other bands from different places!  Like the group “Flatlined” from Ontario.  Nobody would have a clue who they were other than friends & fans of the last group I was in with my brother.  They were touring Canada & when they came to Regina we’d always play a show with them!

Unfortunately they have parted ways.  They were great though & there’s a good chance that whoever is reading this, 95% of you have never heard of them.

I had a CD holder that held 40 discs, wherever I went, it came with me.  Corey noticed I had “Superunknown” by his favourite band “Soundgarden” & “Pantera’s” Greatest Hits album.  He had 5 or 6 Pantera CDs he lent me & also lent me “Badmotorfinger” by Soundgarden.  I rushed out after listening to each CD once to buy my own copy of these albums.  I really liked them!

“Badmotorfinger” is my go to album when I listen to Soundgarden.  I listen to the 3 after this album just haven’t bothered to listen to the 2 before it.  I even own 1 of them on CD.  Here are the 3 CDs & 1 iTunes album I listen to & own by Soundgarden.

NOW IT’S TIME FOR SOME PANTERA!

Pantera’s guitar player was shot & killed in 2004, on stage in a club after Pantera had broken up.  His brother was the drummer for Pantera & the group “Hell Yeah” that he was playing with at the time.  I think that’s the name of the group?

I fell asleep to “Tesseract” the album “Polaris”     iTunes describes them as ambient/math/progressive metal

I exercised to “Elvis Costello & the Attractions” their greatest hits.

There was a terrible collision between Tisdale & Nipawin (Northern/middle) of Saskatchewan on Friday.  A junior hockey team from Humboldt, Saskatchewan were in a bus (going north) en route to Nipawin to play a game.  They collided with a semi-truck on the highway (going south).  15 people on the bus died the head coach, stat keeper, radio broadcaster, & 12 players ranging in age of 16-21.  This past weekend all of Canada stopped & took notice of this horrible tragedy.  Even watching baseball on the weekend, there were many mentions of this tragedy in Saskatchewan.  My thoughts go out to the families, & friends of those who lost someone in this collision & those that survived while watching friends die.  The Prime Minister of Canada was in Humboldt to attend the mass memorial service in Humboldt Sunday evening.

What can we learn from this?  If anybody on the bus had a gun, it wouldn’t have saved their lives.

Only once have I agreed with Trump.  “Take the guns, then deal with stuff after”.  Hopefully the kids, my heroes, marching can prevent a mass shooting.  People with guns who can’t live without them will say something like “Hmm, what ya gonna do?”

There’s already more than enough death in our world without guns, you don’t NEED them (unless you’re hunting, a single shot riffle should be enough), some people WANT them.

THE POLICE

I don’t know if my parents got me hooked on “The Police” or not?  I don’t even know if they had any of albums by “The Police”?  I don’t even remember when I got “The Police’s” greatest hits?  That’s all that I have of them.  14 songs, I think I’m good with that.  You know instantly if it’s Sting or The Police.  His voice is so recognizable, especially if it’s “Roxanne”…………..

All in one night?  They’re going to need 12 or 13+ years for an explanation of their process!

Do you have a question about stage 4 brain cancer?  Ask if you do!

I fell asleep to “Foo Fighters” the album “Concrete & Gold”

Friday evening ended with me watching the Blue Jays win their first game on the road in Texas.  Rain delay but they got it in.  I was also throwing back a couple of pints of Rebellions “Cherry Tart” beer.  I love their sour beers that come by once a year.

2 pints of “Cherry Tart (sour) beer” is full of sugar, almost too sweet for me.  All of that sugar & I was wide awake in the shower by 8:00 am on Saturday.  It’s very sour for 3 or 4 seconds, then incredibly sweet.  Went for a visit with my Grandparents in the afternoon.  Came home but stopped for “Wok Box” for supper.  Neither of us had ever tried it.  Expensive, but Kim will get 2 meals out of her order, in the long run it’s not bad for a fast meal.

Watched the Blue Jays lose 5-1 against Texas.  That makes their record 5W-4L.  After 9 games last year they were 1W-8L, so this is an improvement but nothing to get too excited about.  The Blue Jays will likely look very different by June or at least this year.  It will be more players from the minor leagues taking over.  Next season, nobody will have heard of the players on the 25 man roster.  Yes, they play almost every day.  They had an off day this past Thursday & another one this coming Thursday.

Sunday morning, that “Cherry Tart” beer is gone after 2 more pints last night, & thank goodness.  WAY too sweet for me, tasty, but too much sugar!  Woke up at 8:00 am again, & we don’t even have a kid.  Last game of 3 games for the Blue Jays in Texas.  Hopefully they can get a win today to make their season record 6W-4L instead of a 5W-5L record.  If they’re going to do anything this year they need to have a much better record at the end of April.  Last year they dug themselves a deep hole & never got out of it finishing 4th in a division of 5 teams.

Then it will be a regular Sunday for us of getting ready for the week, Kim will be getting groceries, I made my juice yesterday, hard boil some eggs for breakfast during the week, laundry to be washed & put away, etc.

PAUL SIMON’S – GRACELAND

My Father bought this album when I was very young.  It was released in 1986, I’m not sure if that’s when he got it?  I was a kid so at first I thought it was just OK.  It aged well though!  I ended up buying my own CD sometime between 2005 & 2007?  This is the only Paul Simon album I own.  I know at some point, I’ll seek out more of his stuff, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.  Now I consider this album as one of my many classic albums….

Top 10 Foo Fighters riffs.

Avatar sequel is coming, why?  I had many issues with the first one, I didn’t care for it at all.  Kim bought it though.

Number 1.  Fall Out Boy are NOT a rock band.  Number 2.  They’re a guitar based pop band that uses samples.  If you’re looking for more than that, go somewhere else.  I like Fall Out Boy, great pop band.  If I want to hear a rock band, I’ll listen to something different.

New “Pentatonix” 11 song album “Top Pop Vol.1” is out Friday, April 13th.

2 big releases on April 20th.  “A Perfect Circle” & “Tesseract”

This “Tesseract” band is growing on me, in a good way, not like warts, crabs, or herpes, those have never grown on me.

Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box” reworked for TV show “West World”

Yes, I watch as much Blue Jays baseball as possible.  What doesn’t make sense to me is, why are they babying certain players that are constantly injured?  Their 2B player has been in the major league for 4 years & probably hasn’t played a full season if all of his games were added together.  A season is 162 games, an “everyday” player should be around 120 – 140 games.  This guy is playing for 2 games & 1 game off, to avoid injury, WHY?  So, if he stays healthy he’ll play 108 games.  If he can play 108 games, why not send him out for 120 or 130 games?  Special treatment for him could be difficult if/when they want to trade him.  Other teams could see him as a liability that needs special treatment rather than an asset in a trade.

The more you share this, the more readers I get.  No, I’m not profiting from this in any way.
