Do you have a question about stage 4 brain cancer?  Ask if you do!

Music over the weekend.

Friday, my mom came over for a bit in the afternoon, during an unpleasant down pour of rain & a bit of a wind.  I watched the Toronto Blue Jays lose their 4th game in a row.  I stayed up late watching a video of a 4 hour long podcast with Joe Rogen interviewing Kevin Smith.  I watched it over the course of 4 days.  I’ve also been watching a show called “Imposters” on Netflix, odd show but it becomes very addicting the more you watch it.

Saturday was very uneventful.  Blue Jay, another loss, & more “Imposters” on Netflix.  Kim hard boiled some eggs & did some laundry.

Today is more of us getting ready for the week.  Me making a vegetable juice & baking fish, Kim will be doing the rest of the laundry.

WIDE MOUTH MASON

A blues/jazz/rock trio from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  I really don’t know much about them.  They released 6 albums in total & I haven’t heard anything about them lately.  The 6th album is with a different bass player.  I don’t have the 6th album, only the first 5 on CD.  I first heard of them in the summer of 1996.  They were playing a free local music festival in Regina downtown in Victoria Park…..

1997        Self – Titled release

1997     WHERE I STARTED

1998     STEW

2002    RAINED OUT PARADE

2005         SHOT DOWN SATELLITES

I think I stopped going to their live shows after seeing them live on tour for the album “Rained out Parade”.  Kim & I went with Rob & Diane.  The drummer & bass player rolled a joint to smoke on stage.  I don’t have any issues with marijuana.

I paid to see them play music, smoke weed on your own time.  My ticket said nothing about watching them get high on stage, & that’s not why I was there.  Do that before or after a show, if I run into you on the street, go ahead.  Just don’t ask me to pay to watch you smoke a joint.

Keeping it in the family!  I had a lot of fun in every band I played with, but even more with my brother!

I fell asleep to “Burn the Priest” the album “Legion XX”

Got up to pee in the middle of the night & put on “Stone Temple Pilots (2018)

No exercise today because my appointment this morning.

I’ve been listening to the “Beautiful Midnight” album by Matthew Good Band quite a bit.  Kind of forgot how much I like that album!

BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT

Today/this morning was my appointment to see my doctor at the cancer clinic (the doctor that calls me fat each time I see here).  No, I’m right around 220, that’s 45 pounds less than when I went into the hospital & then ballooned to, I’m guessing 280?  If she body shames me in person, I’ll tell her all of this & that my family doctor has me on a thyroid pill at the moment.  I’d like to be 210-215 but it’s coming off slowly, which I think is a good sign. I eat healthier & I of course exercise 5 days a week.

If she tells me to lose more weight, so be it.  Her problem, not mine.  I don’t look in the mirror often, however I did while brushing my teeth in Calgary.  Then I realized my face & neck were very thin.  A shirt that used to be a touch on the small side was VERY baggy.

If she tells me I’m fat I’ll respond politely with “That’s fine & all, but do I have cancer?”

AFTER MY APPOINTMENT

I knew my scan was good & I’m cancer free, from my appointment with my family doctor.  We went to the cancer clinic & she brought in my other oncologist who chose the chemo therapy I’d be on.  Everything is as it should.  One more appointment with my family doctor regarding my thyroid pill.

At my appointment this morning they were very happy to see me doing so well.  They called me something like a success story, I think I was just incredibly lucky.  December 31st 2018 will make 10 years cancer free for me.

I almost got out of there without a comment on my weight….almost.  We were on our way down the hall & she yells out “LOSE SOME WEIGHT!”  I replied “I HAVE!”  So close, but so far.

THE PHILOSOPHER KINGS

This is a total 180 from my typical rock & metal groups but I really like this group too.  More of an R & B sound.  I believe they’re out of Ontario, Canada, I’m not positive about that.  I own their first 2 albums on CD.  We were going to get tickets to see them in town at The Exchange.  They cancelled the show & opted to go into the studio & record their 4th album.  Seems odd to me to book a tour, then bail to record an album, but what do I know?  Here’s a sampling of their first 2 albums.

1994    “THE PHILOSOPHER KINGS”

1997      “FAMOUS, RICH, & BEAUTIFUL”

….and that’s a wrap on season 2 of “13 Reasons why” as of Monday evening.

Look at that Big Wreck just released a beer to make up for the pennies everyone is spending on albums to stream.

I fell asleep to “Foo Fighters” the album “Foo Fighters” followed by “Dead Sara” the album “Pleasure to Meet You”

I exercised to “Stone Temple Pilots” the album “Stone Temple Pilots (2018)”

I was waiting to post this after my doctor appointment.  Nothing to worry about, it will be 10 year cancer free on December, 31st this year, my scan is clean again this year!!  One more appointment this year at the cancer clinic & I should be done with my appointments this year!  Although I’ll be giving blood for a blood test after another 6 months on my thyroid pill & see my family doctor.  My doctor calls me a “Miracle” I asked him to say that again for Kim.  He said most people with my type of cancer are usually deceased.  I say I got REALLY lucky!

Kim & I hear a lot of people say stuff like ‘Oh, you 2 are so nice’, ‘You 2 have been through more stuff than a couple married for 30 years’?  Where is this coming from?  We just had our 13th wedding anniversary.  Kim is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  No doubt about that one.  She’s the one that had to watch me survive cancer.

She learned how to administer my IV so we could spend time at my family’s cabin in the summer.

Guess what Kim told my parents when I was rushed to the hospital?  “He’s not going to die”.  I was unconscious & didn’t hear that.  That’s a very bold statement.  If I had heard it, I’d do my best to live up to it.

Am I perfect?  No, not by a long shot!  I’m lucky enough that I get to spend my life with Kim, who is perfect for me.  She never thought she’d know so much about baseball & I never thought I’d be watching any episodes of “Dancing with the Stars”.

I know I’ll hear it in some way this summer “You’re fat”, “You need to lose weight”.  This time I’ll respond.  “NO!  I’m not fat”

I’ve lost 45 pounds from my weight before I went into the hospital, gained an extra minimum of 15 pounds, so in total I’ve lost at least 58 pounds in total.  I think my doctor, at the cancer agency, is the type of person who just likes to hear the sound of her own voice.  Her hearts in the right place, just poor execution of what she’s trying to do/say.

I weighed myself on Tuesday, I’m 222 pounds.  If I hit below 210 I’ll look like “skin & bones”.  I graduated high school at 185, so I’ve grown & right around 215 or 220 is where I should be.  I have a big frame/bone structure.

I know when to shut my yap & listen.  If you’re talking all of the time, you’ll never learn anything.  The less you talk, “the more you know.”

THE WATCHMEN

A Canadian group that “broke up” in 2004 I think.  They still tour on occasion but don’t record anymore.  Originally based in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  They recorded 5 studio albums & released a live album last year.  Their 2nd release was HUGE in Canada.  I heard they toured EVERYWHERE though, all the way to Australia.  I was at home from school since I was sick that day.  I remember watching a video on Much Music for a single off of their 2nd album in 1994.  That album rooted them for the Canadian audience.  I thought their final show in Regina was in December of 2004.  I was playing at a party with Corey McDonald.  His co-worker’s party who let us rehearse in his heated garage.

You’ll likely hear a song of theirs from an album & perk up.  Then see a live show & go nuts because the AWESOME recording you liked is even better live!  If a band can’t at least duplicate what is on the album, they’re questionable at best for me.  The Watchmen knock it out of the park though.  One of my favourite bands to see live!  Here are a few songs in order of release…

1993    “McLaren Furnace Room”

MINOR LANGUAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1994   “In The Trees”

1996 “Brand New Day”

1998 “Silent Radar”

Easily my favourite song of theirs (below)

This is so true!  Why bother hating art publically?  I’ve likely done it in the past, waste of energy.  You don’t like it, don’t listen to it?  Pretty simple.  There are far more bands that I don’t listen to, than those that I do listen to!  Just because I don’t like a band or musician doesn’t mean that someone else shouldn’t like them.  Famous bands are famous for a reason.  They worked hard to get where they are, & they have a large following.

On the flip side if a band or artist is on social media, there’s always going to be haters who will call out a band if they don’t like them.  If they’re on social media, they had better grow some thicker skin to deal with all of the idiots out there.  Heck, I used to be one of those idiots.  “Do this, don’t do that”!  No, do what you’re happy doing!

I was watching the pregame of yesterday’s Blue Jay game & was immediately shocked by this news.  23 year old closing pitcher from Mexico was arrested Tuesday morning for domestic assault.  I don’t think anyone in the Blue Jay’s organization ever thought that would happen?  Field manager John Gibbons probably took the news the worst.  He stated that he had a father to son type of relationship with the young pitcher.

If you do the crime, you do the time though.  I don’t know where the trial will take place?  I assume in Canada.  Until the trial he’ll be in jail until June 23rd I believe the date was?  I know it was mid-June.

I fell asleep to “Trivium” the album “The Sin & the Sentence” followed by “Dead Sara” both full albums on iTunes that I bought yesterday

I exercised to “I Mother Earth” the album “Scenery & Fish”

Weekly exercise total; 720 pushups, 560 leg lifts, 300 crunches, 240 squats, 180 tricep pushups, & 120 back flexes.  I took shorter rest periods again today.  Every day I do my exercises I A) Make sure I’m doing them all properly & B) Try to take shorter rest periods between sets.

This week was pitiful in my opinion.  I expect more from myself.  I am often my worst critic though.  You might think differently, but that’s only 3/5 days.  I stayed up until the early morning on Saturday cleaning up the kitchen, then I was over tired on Monday & couldn’t sleep.  I need to remember I’m not in my early or mid-30s anymore, & I can’t burn the candle at both ends anymore.

Another appointment next week after having 2 this past week.  Another in the summer at some point.  I hope the one in the summer is my last one there?  The appointment next week will be a reoccurring checkup/refills on the pills I take.

Unless I get a call before then, everything should be fine.  I think, if my cancer was to come back it would have already.  The doctors thought it might “come back” in 2013.  That was 5 years ago, I think I’m “in the clear”.

Sometimes it takes a brush with death to finally wake up.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS

They’re lumped in with the grunge movement.  They were based in San Diego & got together in 1989.  I have everything from the 1992 release “Core” all the way up to & including “Stone Temple Pilots (2018)”.  I have mostly CDs of this group & I think the recent 2 albums from iTunes.  I really didn’t get into them until a few years ago.  I had a bunch of their CDs, & didn’t realize I had all of their stuff on CD & amongst my iTunes library.  Yes, the singer, Scott Weiland, died of either alcohol or a drug overdose a few years ago.  The band carried on with an EP with Chester Bennington who felt it was too much for him with his role in “Linkin Park” also.  Unfortunately he died as well not to long ago.

CORE 1992

PURPLE 1994

TINY MUSIC…SONGS FROM THE VATICAN GIFT SHOP 1996

I’m pretty sure this was about the album that caught my attention.

  1. 4 1999

SHANGRI-LA DEE DA 2001

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS    2010

HIGH RISE w/ Chester Bennington        2013

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS 2018

This last album is with their new singer Jeff Gutt.  Runner up on the show “The X Factor”.  Well he didn’t win.  Who did?  This is exactly why I’m opposed to these talent contest shows.  He got the last laugh though.

Stephen Colbert’s musical guest Tuesday night was Paramore!

Well, they’re not gone just in serious debt.  I like “Gibson/Epiphone” guitars.  All of this hipity dipity music the young kids are listening to did this.  Is “Fender Guitars” next?  Will “PRS (Paul Reed Smith) Guitars” become the next BIG thing for guitar players?

I fell asleep to “Myles Kennedy” his solo album “Year of the Tiger” followed by “Stone Temple Pilots” the album “Purple”

I exercised to “Pink” the album “Beautiful Trauma”

LANGUAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weekly exercise total; 1,200 pushups, 800 leg lifts, 500 crunches, 400 squats, 300 tricep pushups, & 200 back flexes.  I took shorter rest periods today, I’ve got some stuff to do.  This is what happens when you wake up at 7:00 am here. I was doing 8 sets of 25 pushups, all I did was add 5 to each set to make it 240 a day.

Still every day I wake & for a brief moment I think to myself that this is ALL my fault.  That’s just me, nobody has ever said that to me.  Nobody, including myself, ever expected this to happen to someone they know.  I’m sure this is not how Kim expected her life to turn out, nor did anyone else.  After I think about that for 1 second, I get in my wheelchair & start my day, & never think of that until the next “….mourning”.

I do this amount of exercise as a necessary evil, at least that’s what I think beforehand, & after it for a minute or two.  I roll on my back to catch my breath & ask myself “Why, did you do that much?”  The answer is simple, maybe what I just did will help me walk one day?  After I cool down for 1 or 2 minutes, I feel much better, closer to whatever normal is & go about my day.

ALTER BRIDGE

They’ve all but created a new genres for themselves.  Are they a rock band or a metal band?  Hard to fit them into a genres now.  The music is somewhat metal, Myles Kennedy’s voice is far from it though.  Power metal?  I couldn’t say.  They’re not “Iron Maiden”, “Trivium”, or like any power metal group out there.  Alter Bridge is made up of the original bassist, drummer, & guitarist from “Creed”.  The difference is the singer Myles Kennedy, probably best known from “Slash feat. Myles Kennedy & the Apocalyptic Love”.  Way back when, I saw a live show that Myles Kennedy played in the opening band here in Regina.  “The Mayfield Four” Myles was the front man/guitarist, “The Watchmen” & headliner “Big Wreck”.  1 American group & 2 Canadian groups.

Alter Bridge is very high on my long list of preferred bands.  I only learned the first song on their first album “Find the Real” from the album “One Day Remains” there’s a long high note at the end of the song, I think I hit it once between the 6 rehearsals & one performance.  They’ve lost a lot of fans since their debut album released in 2004.  They’ve gone from a straight up rock band to whatever you want to call them now.  I liked them as they were when they started & even more now.  After 5 studio albums, a B-Side album, & 3 live albums!  Here are some of my favourite songs by them & one that everybody else seems to think is the thing since sliced bread…….

5 studio albums from a band based in Florida.  Yet, when I say Alter Bridge, I’m usually answered with “Who?”  Fair enough, they mostly stick to touring Europe.  Pretty rare to see them live in North America.

Alter Bridge, Nothing but Thieves, Paramore & Muse are now on my bucket list!  These are some of these groups Kim has mentioned she’d like to see live.

“Venom” trailer from Marvel.

Metallica has made 2 bad albums.  “…And Justice for all” poorly mixed, not all their fault & “St. Anger” lazy production & very questionable song writing.  The rest of their albums are good, but over rated.

I don’t like getting drunk at a live show.  I’ll have one or two drinks, but that’s all.  I prefer to relax & enjoy the experience.  If I’m home & it’s playing on my stereo, I have maybe 4-6 drinks if it’s a weekend or special occasion.  Heck, there are weeks where I would love a drink, weekend hits & all of a sudden I don’t feel like having a drink.

Do you have a question about stage 4 brain cancer?  Ask if you do!

I fell asleep to “Stone Temple Pilots” the album “STP 2018” followed by “Tesseract” the album “Sonder” & finally “A Perfect Circle” the album “Eat the Elephant” this last album is a grower not a shower!

I’m so glad it’s the weekend.  I need a couple of days to rest my body.

Stayed up late to watch the Blue Jays.  They’re currently 13W-6L.  Last year they did not win their 11th game until May, HUGE improvement & younger players coming up from the minor leagues doing REALLY well in the major league.  I hope this is a sign of what we’ll see next year!?  So me on the couch with a gin & sprite & 1 beer.

We’re a bit behind on our DVR though.  Late night talk shows, a couple of Ellen Degeneres shows, & 2 or 3 other shows.  Saturday Kim was doing laundry while we were catching up on our DVR after the day time baseball game.  Very quiet Saturday.

Today is just a normal Sunday for us.  Kim got ahead of the day.  She went grocery shopping on Saturday & already did some of the laundry.  I have to make a juice for the week, & we cleaned off the DVR on Saturday.  One more Blue Jays game today in N.Y. then a day off for the Blue Jays on Monday.

It’s a 162 game season for each baseball team, & I watch as many as possible, which is usually around 120-150 I’m guessing.

ROCK IS NOT DEAD

It’s not a dead genres.  Gene Simmons, KISS, started saying this all over social media, & it’s the biggest pile of manure I have ever heard of.  Maybe KISS’ sales have dropped, guess what?  Everybody else’ sales have dropped because of A) Napster B) iTunes C) All of these hipster streaming sites?  I use iTunes, a few people I know in bands signed to a label tell me they get a significant portion of the money spent on iTunes.  I don’t believe in “free” music & I know I’m not alone.  iTunes isn’t available for just me

“I’ll never pay for an album!  Who would do such a thing?”  You didn’t want to pay for music, but that’s only part of the reason rock music is beaten up right now.  New generation of music fans aka different music for a different generation.  Most teenagers just simply aren’t fans of rock music.  One day some kid will pop out of a garage after hearing a rock album that inspires her/him.

Many people probably don’t want to hear this but “Nickelback” was the next “Nirvana”.  The difference is “Nirvana” inspired others to be creative, “Nickelback” inspired others to create similar music, since they knew “Nickelback” was making good money on that style of music.  I honestly don’t know a teen that likes “Nickelback”.  If “Nickelback” was the next “Nirvana”, I’m sure somebody else will take over as THE rock band of a new generation.  Rock’s not dead it’s just harder to find.  It’s buried under the clutter of Country, EDM, Pop, etc.  It will come back, we just need to be patient & ride out this phase.  Music has always gone through peeks & valleys.  If you like “Nickelback” that’s fine with me.  If you like “Nickelback” because you think it’s badass & you’re a heroin addict, then you have 2 problems!

If rock is dead why do we still have “Pearl Jam”, “Foo Fighters”, “Alter Bridge”, “Alice Cooper”, “Neil Young”, “Rob Zombie”, “Tool”, “A Perfect Circle”, “Chevelle”, “Alice in Chains”, “Big Wreck”, “Royal Blood”, “Queens of the Stone Age”, “Stone Temple Pilots”, “Clutch”, “Bryan Adams”, “Finger Eleven”, “Paul McCartney”, “Eagles of Death Metal”, “Muse”, “Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds”, “Smashing Pumpkins”, “Stone Sour”, “Them Crooked Vultures”, “Greta Van Fleet”, “The Trews”, “Weezer”, “Godsmack”, “Theory of a Deadman”, “Nickelback”, “3 Doors Down” etc.  Sure some of this is older music, but they’re still making rock music.  This list doesn’t even branch out into the metal music out there.

You can say rock is dead, just look a little harder until someone brings it closer to the forefront of music.  I’m not saying everyone will like these groups or even that I do, but there’s a sample of what’s out there.

www.loudwire.com agrees with me.  Long article.

http://loudwire.com/rock-not-dead-america-thriving-rock-festival-circuit/

I’ve never heard of this group but I thought this sounded pretty good.  2 full length albums & many singles including Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box” cover

I’ll wait, I just bought 2 albums from iTunes Thursday night.

For me Gene Simmons is very close to the Donald Trump of music.  Not for his musical career & success, but for the slimy money hungry person he is.

Do you have a question about stage 4 brain cancer?  Ask if you do!

I fell asleep to “Metallica” the album “Master of Puppets”

So far this year I’m 4/5 out of the albums purchased!  “Corrosion of Conformity” was very forgettable, very fast.  Somethings still a bit wonky with iTunes, so no more preorders from me.  See if that finally fixes things?

Thursday evening I watched the Toronto Blue Jays home/season opener with another Chris.  The other Chris & Trevor couldn’t make it.  Good thing after watching the Blue Jays pickup right where they left off last year with a 6-1 losing effort.

$20,000,000 short-stop will be on the 60 day disabled list, he hasn’t played since July 7th.  Also the $23,000,000 third baseman can’t throw to first base.  He can hit, I don’t see him playing 3B until sometime next week.  Time to see all of that depth they acquired in the offseason!

Slept in on Friday, Kim was up early to pick up Hannah & go shopping with her.  I was folding laundry when they came home the 3 of us had a picnic inside.  Yogurt, apple slices, Panini split 3 ways, a 1/6 of a cookie each, & a little candy that Hannah brought for us all.  Hannah says we can save the other half of the cookie later.

Saturday was a busy day for us.  Lunch with Corey, Jolene, Hannah, & extended family from out of town.  HUGE Easter meal, ham, potato salad, 2 broccoli salads, perogies, cabbage rolls, peas, bread, cookies, & 2 pies, apple & cherry.

We were home by 5:50 or so.  Mitch & Rachel came by for BBQ steak, broccoli salad, & garlic bread.  Sat around & visited for a while.  Kim went to bed & I stayed up to watch the Blue Jays win in grand fashion.

3 stolen bases by 1 player in the 8th inning to make it 5 – 3 for the Jays.  That hasn’t happened since 1947 or 1941, I can’t remember what they said.  Nobody has stolen home plate for the Blue Jays since 2007.

I watched it late Saturday night, Kim & Brewster were in bed.  I was so happy & couldn’t make a sound.  The Blue Jays won the game 5 – 3.  That made their record 1W – 2L.  New York has 5 very capable homerun hitters.  6’7” Aaron Judge hit 52 HR while winning rookie of the year, Stanton was in Miami & hit 59 HR.  Then there’s Sanchez, Gregorious, & currently injured 1B Jeff Bird who all 3 collectively likely made another 110 HR.  They’re just scary to watch.

This is how they won the 4th game.

After 4 games (12 hours) of baseball against the N.Y. Yankees, the Toronto Blue Jays are 2W – 2L.  That’s all I expected of them.  Better than last year but they won’t make it to the World Series.  All of that being said 4 games is a very small sample for a 162 game season.  Last year they got off to a 2W-12L start.

Kim & I watched “Star Wars: Episode 8 The Last Jedi” on blu-ray Sunday night.  I’m glad I saw it in the theater!  Our blu-ray was skipping, freezing & the audio dropped out a bit during the last 15 minutes of the movie.  We’ll exchange it pretty quick.  I just took it out of the package to watch it last night.  I’m the one that will watch a movie more than a few times.  I’m pretty sure I watched “Deadpool” at least 15 times or so?

GRETA VAN FLEET & LED ZEPPELIN

I slowly got into Led Zeppelin in 1998 & 1999.  I had a 3 disc box set only at the time.  When Corey started SIAST (Saskatchewan Institute of Arts & Science Technology) in December of 2001(?) he was really big on Led Zeppelin then.  I started buying their CDs.  I only have a few, but most of them came from Corey’s CDs.  I learned some simple songs on guitar, but there aren’t many easy songs to play.

What does “Greta Van Fleet” have to do with this?  Close your eyes & just listen, you’d swear it is Led Zeppelin.  They’re quite young actually ranging from 18-21 years of age.

Here some of my favourite Led Zeppelin songs followed by 2 or 3 Greta Van Fleet songs…

Here are 3 songs from Greta Van Fleet’s 2nd, 8 song album “From the Fires”.

I can’t blame the singer for sounding like a carbon copy of Robert Plant.  The bassist & drummer aren’t anywhere near the talent of John Paul Jones & John Bonham.  The guitarist I’d say is trying to sound like the 2nd coming of Jimmy Page.  They’re good at what they do, but Led Zeppelin did this first.

I don’t blame him at all.  Jonny Depp states that actors should not become musicians.  Then you see all of this news that he’s now playing guitar in “Hollywood Vampires” with Joe Perry of Aerosmith.  I was all like “WHAAAAA…..?”
