Well I know the guitars I want so we don’t need to talk about that anymore, you’re likely bored of hearing about them.  I’m sure I’ll end up shopping for a replacement long after this website stops being updated.  I’m not just going to roll into the guitar store & exclaim “I’LL TAKE THESE GUITARS GOOD PEOPLE!”

This is one of the over $5800(?) guitars (in Canada) I’m not even going to think about buying!  This Core PRS seems to be EVERYWHERE.  A Core PRS is said to take a year to make and they were introduced as limited this year only.  How have I been seeing so many of these that have been purchased already?  Heck I just saw a video from 2019 with one of these in it??????

I’m guessing its American stores that bought them to sell to customers, they’re over $3800 in America.  In Canada I don’t know of any store that has any model line of PRS in stock?

Normally during a Friday night baseball game I’d be watching the game while sipping on “Baron Samedi” spiced rum on ice.  Not the case this Friday.  Instead I watched the Toronto Blue Jays lose while HOOVERING water!

Kim had an idea Friday afternoon, I got scarred!  She ‘helped’ me make supper.  With VERY accurate instructions.  “Check this after 20 minutes, give it a stir, and see if it feels right” yeah, that helps!  You know what would have been easier……cereal!  Brewster likes it when I make him a tiny bowl of Cheerios.  Not Kim, she needs pasta with a fancy tomato, feta, Italian seasoning, basil, salt, & pepper sauce.

Kim: “You know, about this much in the palm of your hand”.

Me: “My hand is bigger than your’s.  How much is that?”

Kim: “A tablespoon roughly.”

Me: “Then why don’t I use a tablespoon?”

Kim: Rolls her eyes and gives me that “Oh come on REALLY?!?” look.

I’m gonna call it a win??!!  We ate & nobody got sick?!  We could have avoided this entire situation if I’d just made sandwiches, cereal, macaroni & cheese!

I couldn’t fall asleep Friday night.  For the first time a week I got up at 2:00 am to get my favourite paper weight/iPod from the kitchen where it was charging.  Listened to an album as always & when it finished it, then it started playing a play list.  I was listening to the newest release from “Foo Fighters”, then it was playing a playlist of something I don’t mind at all but wasn’t in the mood for something from the last studio release by “Soundgarden”.  I can’t remember what song it was, the hacker hasn’t left though!

I guess I’ll try the iPod again next weekend????

We watched “Thunder Force” on Netflix Saturday afternoon.  FANTASTIC, very entertaining & as expected absolutely HILARIOUS!

Evening baseball game was delayed due to rain.  We watched the first 3 episodes of “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” on Disney + and then the movie “Run” on Netflix, then I watched part of the game at 9:00 pm.  Kim actually suggested “The Mighty Ducks” TV series but she’s vetoed the movies for many, many years.

That’s WAY too much TV, movies, & butt on the couch for me & that was just Saturday!  Of course I got in about 45 minutes of guitar playing.  Kim crunched the numbers while watching TV all day Saturday & it looks like this year will be VERY tight with payments towards the income tax.

Sunday I got up to watch the 30 minute replay of the game that went too late on Saturday.  There was supposed to be a game Sunday morning but it was rained out.  I watched a few episodes of “How I Met Your Mother” on Netflix & played guitar.  Pretty lazy weekend for us all around.

I can’t relax watching any TV & that was a TON of TV.

I got up early Monday morning, had breakfast, emptied the dishwasher, exercised & came in here to edit this post.  All before Kim got up!  9:20 am.  I’ve showered & ready to play guitar for the rest of the day, until we watch Ellen followed by the news & a baseball game.

I’m constantly going “back & forth” on this Jackson Dominion only because of the price.  It looks & sounds like a great guitar but for 2 reasons I’d be out.  I want Kim to get something for herself finally & this will be a VERY tight year for us financially.  I was thinking of using the money from the sale of my 7 string to put towards the purchase of the PRS S2 McCarty 594 but we may need that lil’ chunk of cash for other things?  It’s much more affordable than the PRS S2 but I’ll have to pass on it as much as I like it.

After chatting with Kim last night, there will be no guitar purchase this year, if anything an extra guitar sale or maybe some old baseball cards I have here somewhere?  Things are VERY tight for us this year & Kim’s a little unsettled/anxious.  When she gets that way, I’m usually worse.  I worry about her & whatever the problem could be?  Kim doesn’t know what she’s worried about, but she felt the same way on Sunday.  I’ll sell my 7 string & see what’s needed?  I used to be the type of person that would worry about what might happen, now I tend to deal with things as they come.

My perfect Metal show/lineup isn’t coming anywhere near Western Canada, but I bought a T-Shirt last year.  It was scheduled for last year so they put a live set on from each of the 4 bands.  This is the order they’re playing later this year, bottom is the headliner…

Too bad that it’s not coming to Western Canada.  Only 3 Canadian dates, one in Ontario & 2 in Québec.

Exercise total for 5 days.

500 Curls w/ 20 pound dumb bells

300 Shoulder raises/Chest presses w/ 10 pound dumb bells

1050 Crunches

1050 Leg lifts

300 Squats

600 Back flexes

I’m going to stop writing this stuff at the end of 2021 or one post into 2022.  I’m getting pretty bored of writing this stuff.  I live it & regurgitate it to you & I’m pretty “simple” to begin with.  Eat, exercise, eat, shower, eat, play guitar, eat, play more guitar, have supper, watch TV, play guitar, sleep & repeat.

I’ll buy the PRS S2 McCarty 594 a soon as I have the cash.  When I order the PRS S2 McCarty 594, I’ll have to wait at least 6 months for it.  Then save and repeat but the wait might not be as long?  I’m excited to get any guitar but when I have the money (in a few years) & order this guitar, it’ll feel like another level!  I’m not undermining the importance and flexibility of other guitars I own, but this PRS S2 model is said to be THE guitar in the PRS S2 line!

After a TON of thought, the Schecter Tempest, although I REALLY liked the majority of what it offers, might be too similar in sound with a few less features compared to the McCarty 594.  I’ve also realized that I’m not a huge fan of the Stratocaster body shape, so as I was searching throughout last week & this gem kept showing up & won me over with a MUCH more different sound & MUCH lower price tag (less than $650 after tax), despite this purchase being many years away.

Go ahead guitar gear heads, it says “Squier” instead of anything else.  I’m not paying a ton of cash for a bigger brand name.  I’ve got a Fender & a PRS S2, good enough for me! Hopefully the split coil on the McCarty 594 is as good as they say.  A full on hollow body will be completely different from ANYTHING I have and be a great ending chapter to my guitar purchasing…if it’s still around.

I tried to force ‘guitar mojo’ on a Stratocaster, but that never works.  Had to be exactly what I wanted because I don’t want to shop for another guitar.  Guitars give me FOMO, fear of missing out, since I don’t have a disposable income for anything let alone guitars, so if they go out of production before I save the money to buy it, I get kinda sad.  I guess these purchases are more of a hopeful occurrence in the future.

Other than it being very cold in Regina this week, it’s been a good satisfying week of exercise.  Some ‘communication breakdowns’ getting all of my refills from the doctor to the pharmacy, but we got it figured out by the time I needed everything.

The Covid active cases are on decline throughout the province of Saskatchewan since January 12th.  As per the restrictions, nothing changes until further notice on February 19th.  I guess that’s fine, I would prefer tighter restrictions but I’m not a politician?

As I’ve said many times before, I really watch a miniscule amount of TV & I missed “The Ellen Degeneres Show” on her birthday show.  New DVR, so I don’t know if it was me, a user problem, or if something went wonky with the DVR box?

Right now I’m playing a handful of songs by “Pearl Jam”.

I’m continuously running through these “Stone Temple Pilots” song as well & other stuff too.  Keeps me busy.

The music I like is mostly from the 1990s, there’s usually some “Soundgarden”, “Alice in Chains”, “Rage Against the Machine”, “Audioslave”, & always “Foo Fighters”, etc. being played on guitar here.  Then as far as a little bit of metal goes “Metallica”, “Megadeth”, “In Flames, “Trivium” and eventually some “Lamb of God”.  For the 7 string it’s “Trivium” a dash of “Dream Theater” and I like coming up with stuff on the 7 string.

We’re watching TV Thursday evening.  Kim picks out a documentary & instantly grabs her cell as usual, & it drives me nutz!  I said to her, as I always do “You’re not even watching your show?”  I get the usual reply from her “I’m listening”.  Then I caught her with “But the show is subtitled and in Swedish?”  BOOM!

April 30th marks the 3rd album titled ‘Typhoons’ from “Royal Blood” who released a video for the title track!

I had 2 1/2 great days last week.  The domestic terrorism encouraged by the President greatly angered/saddened/depressed & made me react poorly on Fridays post.  That was not a reaction, it was edited many times & with each edit it came out the same.  I apologize if it affected anyone negatively but I don’t apologize for my feelings.  I do regret saying “For those that have ever approved of him & voted for him, you drank the Kool-Aid & screwed up BIG but you’re human & people make mistakes.” Trump supporters that weren’t involved in the riot, you’ve done nothing wrong & are entitled to your own opinion.  There were peaceful protesters at the Capitol building, that’s totally acceptable!  The people I have an issue with are the rioters & government officials that allowed the situation to get to this point despite WARNINGS from half of the world & multiple red flags from the President.  Most people saw something like this coming, how did the US government miss this?  All I ever want from someone is that they do their job.  I’d say let’s put it behind us, but something might still happen?  REALLY!  NO MEANS NO!

I don’t live there, politicians didn’t consider something of this magnitude happening, nobody listened to warnings over 4 years, & there’s not much I can do about it.

Thanks to everyone that participated in the guitar give away, & those tried to win the guitar for me!  I didn’t get the guitar, but thank you for entering the contest!

If the winner of this give away is reading this, CONGRATULATIONS!  It seems like a FANTASTIC guitar!

Now that the contest/lottery is over & I didn’t get that guitar.  I’ve decided that I’ll save table scraps to A) Buy the PRS S2 McCarty 594 then B) Buy the PRS SE “Paul’s Guitar”.  If the Core model is good enough for the owner, the cheaper SE model is great for me!  I’ll discuss this later on.

Big news in the music industry!  Gibson guitars bought the Mesa Boogie amplifier company.  Dave Mustaine of “Megadeth” left his endorsement deal with “Dean” guitars and is likely headed to “Gibson” or “Kramer” guitars for his endorsement deal that will likely feature a Signature line of Dave Mustaine guitars.  Gibson also announced a Signature line of bass guitars by Gene Simmons of “KISS”.

Mesa Boogie amplifiers were a BIG thing!  If you’ve ever listened to rock, metal, or Nu-metal from the ‘90s – early 2000s, you’ve likely heard a Mesa Boogie amplifier.  Dave Grohl even played through a Mesa Boogie amplifier for a few years as the lead singer of “Foo Fighters”.  The Gibson Company buying Mesa Boogie was not the BIG music news of the week it was more that Dave Mustaine, fired from “Metallica” in the 1980s, has left his endorsement deal at “Dean” guitars but “no one knows” what Company he’ll go to as of this writing on Monday, January 11th?

Gibson guitars have released a signature line of Gene Simmons bass guitars.  I’m indifferent to this announcement, I’ve never played Bass guitar, I’ve never been a fan of “KISS” despite knowing some of their material & I’ve never been a fan of Gene Simmons despite watching his early 2000s reality show.  His kids are AWESOME based on what I saw on the TV series.

Regarding this opinion above, to say that “KISS” is irrelevant does & doesn’t make sense.  I think “KISS” is a band you’re either a HUGE fan of or just don’t care for their music.  The most modern & relevant guitar player endorsed by Gibson is Dave Grohl & Matthew Heafy of “Trivium” as far as I know?  Dave Grohl has a signature Hollow body Trini Lopez DG-335 which I believe is made by Gibson guitars, however I don’t believe it is in production for the average consumer?  I own a Matthew Heafy signature 7 string Epiphone Les Paul.  Which is now out of production but will be returning to production with different specifications.  I wanted the original version because it was a normal/non-metal looking 7 string guitar.  I do not see myself even considering another 7 string guitar.

The fact that Gibson has an iconic name on a bass guitar line is great, whoever it is.  I don’t see anything HUGE that makes it a Gene Simmons model.  It’s a traditional/common body shape.  If you like KISS and play bass guitar you’ll likely want one, & the price will jump much higher for that line because of the name affiliation.

I’d love to own a DG-335, a Mark Tremonti signature Core PRS in any colour other than black, or a “Paul’s Guitar” either an SE or super expensive Core model since I didn’t win the SE giveaway.  The most realistic one here is the “Paul’s guitar” PRS SE, although it’s still expensive for a guitar made oversea.

This is THE time for instrument geeks!  This is the time of year when 100s of companies roll out their new models & additions to their brand.  The news is just trickling out now, since it will be online instead of a 4 day trade show in California, but all should be revealed by the end of next week.

When I eventually purchase this guitar, it will the same colour as in the video but with the shape of a Les Paul, since that’s the wiring format of it.

Whenever this buying opportunity rolls around in the next 20 years, the “Paul’s Guitar” SE will look like this…

…by that time I will have likely sold some guitar stuff.

You’re probably asking “Why does this guy need more guitars?  He’s just wasting money!”  That’s a fair question.  I don’t need or want the same guitar ever & the only thing every guitar has in common is the neck of the guitar & that can be a different size/shape on any guitar.  I literally spend nothing over the course of a week, maybe $15/month other than groceries.  When I say I’m saving table scraps for stuff I want, that means no Christmas or Birthday gifts, just substitute money instead of gifts until these guitars are purchased.  I’m not about to tie up our shared income for myself, we’re using that for renovations at the moment & hopefully find a house in 2022.  If that means guitar purchases get pushed back, I’m more than OK with that.  Who knows maybe after I purchase the PRS S2 McCarty 594 I won’t want the “Paul’s Guitar” but I’m willing to wait for the “Paul’s Guitar”, there’s no rush to get it tomorrow & I’ll have to save up for both anyways.

I put a bunch of songs on hold to fully learn these 4 song’s on guitar.  I know with practice they will come along, one at a time.

I’m really focused on learning these 4 songs to add to my arsenal of stuff I like to play and find challenging to learn.  No you haven’t seen or know everything I’m working on guitar wise.  Those will start this week as I finish learning this song.

Honestly I’ve skimmed over a few of these songs a few times with a guitar in hand.  The videos I’ve previously posted are more of a “work in progress” or status reports.  Not something I’d play on stage for an audience that paid to hear it.  I figure I’ll learn a handful of songs & just play them into the ground, Kim’s gonna have issues, although that new amplifier I bought in December is FANTASTIC even at low volume levels, should I tell her that?

I was finding it difficult to find songs I want to learn on a 7 string guitar…HELLO I’ll be busy for months learning this mountain of glory!  Oh man am I gonna push myself learning that stuff.  That’s no walk in the park!  CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

I know I’ve said it more than once but the PRS “Paul’s Guitar” SE will truly be my final purchase.  It’s getting cramped in this room & after that purchase my guitar stands will be full.  Also other guitars are not nearly as desirable or worth saving money for, to me.

I’ve been sad/angry/depressed/disappointed & have not slept well after the events in the USA since they happened on Wednesday.  Sunday night was the first time I slept well since then.

Exercise total for 4 days.

500 Curls w/ 20 pound dumb bells

300 Shoulder raises/Chest presses w/ 10 pound dumb bells

900 Crunches

900 Leg lifts

300 Squats

450 Back flexes

1:00 hour of yoga over 2 days

To be clear about this, I don’t have a home studio.  I have no camera, cell phone, or audio recording device.  If I come up with a good sounding guitar line, I play it many times to remember it.  “The Beatles” only recorded stuff if they could remember it the next day, so I kind of operate the same way…I just don’t sound like The Beatles.  Any photos or videos on here or Facebook are courtesy of Kim & her cell phone.

I was missing a sleeping pill last night.  I take 2 different pills, one to make me fall asleep faster than my typical 3 or 4 hours of tossing & turning in bed.  The other keeps me asleep.  We missed getting a refill yesterday on the pill that keeps me asleep.  I woke up close to 3:00 am & finally decided to give up on trying to fall asleep at 5:00 am & got up to do my exercises.

My guitar came in Tuesday afternoon.  First impressions, DAMN it’s pretty!  I’ve honestly never played a guitar right out of the box that needs no adjustment.  I tuned it and it was ready to go.  Even just the tuning buttons were INCREDIBLY smooth.  I had HIGH expectations for it, & the S2 PRS greatly exceeded them!

Luckily I missed recording the baseball game Tuesday evening.  I caught the last 2 innings since I was busy playing my new guitar.  After my exercises are done & I’ve showered, I play it all of the time.

I was just about to play guitar after my shower on Tuesday & figured I should check my email.  I had an email confirming my guitar was in & ready for me to pick up.  My brother picked me up & we went to the store.  I tuned it & I’ve been playing it as much as possible since.  Playing it (unplugged) even while watching Blue Jays baseball in the evening.  I hate having to stop playing it!  I wish you could see it in person, the photo just doesn’t compare.

I’ve played 3 guitars in my life that made me think “Why aren’t all guitars made this way?”  My friend’s hollow body Gretsch guitar in the summer, my Epiphone 7 string that Kim got me for my 40th birthday at the end of January, & my new PRS S2.  The hype is real!!!!!

…and now I’d like to introduce you to “Sunny”!  PRS S2 Semi-hollow Custom.

Having this PRS S2 Custom 22 only solidifies my desire for the S2 McCarty 594.  Last guitar purchase, followed by that amplifier & footswitch.

If you care to watch.  These are the different bridges they use on guitars at PRS, as shown by Paul Reed Smith.  Sunny has a tremolo bridge, and the one I plan to order has a 2 piece stop tail bridge.

If we find a house next year, the amplifier & footswitch are put on hold.  Well come June 1st of 2021 EVERYTHING stops for the hope of finding a house!  The amplifier & footswitch will have to wait.

If I ever got my hands on a Core Tremonti PRS with a HUGE (90% off) discount, that would be hard to pass up.  This S2 PRS is beautiful.  I’m over the moon with everything on this guitar!  Here’s that SUPER nice Mark Tremonti Core PRS, not in the typical black.

A Core PRS goes for $3,800 US, which is $6,574 + tax in Canada.  I used to say $5000 was my limit for a guitar, not anymore.  It’s far less than that or even the USA price for Core model, I just paid my limit for a guitar.  The final order is less expensive than what I have, it’s still very close to my limit.

“Sunny” is a lower priced S2 PRS guitar.  The quality is unmatched to any guitar I’ve ever played.  The downside & the upside of it is that we paid a lot for it & it REALLY impresses me.  So it’s VERY nice but it does have a large price tag.  One more S2 and I’m literally spent!

I do watch some TV other than baseball.  The Ellen Degeneres Show, A Late Show with Stephen Colbert, & about 3 other scripted shows that aren’t on TV right now.  Prodigal Son, The Resident, & Mom.  No matter what show I’m watching, there’s a guitar in my hands!

Why is Donald Trump EVERYWHERE?  If Biden wins the election, things could get messy when he moves into the White House.

This week I’ve been playing stuff I know the basic chord progression of while making it more distinct playing lead stuff instead on the new guitar “Sunny”.

I’ve been listening to a 20th anniversary reissue of the first self-titled Into Eternity album that I got on CD.  “Into Eternity” describe themselves as extreme progressive metal.  I think of them as death metal meets the harmonies of “Queen”, that’s HIGH-PRAISE in my books.  Good luck finding a CD other than through the Regina based band that until recently only had the files for the album.  Into Eternity are the Regina heroes that are still underground despite having toured or played with big name acts such as “Motorhead”, “Megadeth”, “Lamb of God”, “Opeth” & I believe “Dream Theater”.  I thik it was last year or 2018 they released their 6th studio album.  The last 5 albums should be available everywhere.  I bought 3 of them at HMV when it was open & managed to get the 6th album on amazon where you can find all of their albums now!

Stuff I’ve learned on guitar other than 5 or 6 scale patterns I do as a warm up.  All of these songs are new to me on guitar!

450 Curls w/ 20 pound dumb bells

250 Shoulder raises/Chest presses w/ 10 pound dumb bells

500 Crunches

500 Leg lifts

200 Squats

280 Back flexes

1:30 hours of yoga over 2 days

I guess when you think about it I’ve done OK.  Went into the hospital at 265 pounds, dropped to 200 pounds, and couldn’t put on any weight so I ate nothing but sugar until I weighed about 280.  I was at 226 on January 1st & now I’m stronger at a weight of 213 pounds.  In 1998 I was 185 pounds, I know my weight will never be in the 100s.

There’s no secret to my weight loss.  A diet is what you eat all of the time.  It’s not where you change what you eat until you lose weight & return to your previous type of food & beverage.  No matter what you’re eating & drinking over an extended period of time, don’t expect to gain or lose weight.  I’ve been eating the same thing for breakfast, lunch, & 3 small snacks a day since 2015, & I exercise 1:30 hours or more 5 days a week.

I pay attention to what I eat & how much of it.  I drink only water 99% of the time.  2 eggs a day, 0% yogurt, hummus, crackers, fish, 1 banana, and a glass of a mixed vegetable juice that I make, supper is the only wild card & it’s about portion control.  Kim drinks water, coffee, & tea.  We buy 1 liter of skim milk and sometimes use the entire liter before it spoils.  There’s always a vegetable tray in the fridge too.  No pop, just Bubbly sparkling water with natural fruit flavour.

I gotta say that this week my self-motivation to exercise has seriously dropped.  I exercise, but I really don’t like pushing myself to do it.  Maybe my body needs a break?  I’m still sore, stiff & tired.  Hopefully our long weekend next week will do the trick

If I try to relax, I get fidgety, I feel like I should be doing something.  It’s odd, I don’t want to do anything but I feel guilty just doing nothing?  Kim even mentioned it a few weeks ago.

I mentioned in the last post that I’d like another guitar.  I’m saying right now I don’t need another guitar.  I’ve got one on order, I’m saving for another, & I’m saving to upgrade my amplifier.  I need to play/hear the stuff that’s coming to me before I purchase anything else.  I’m VERY happy with what I have & what’s coming to me.  Another guitar, maybe in 4 years or more, or maybe not at all?

All of that being said, there’s a lot of stuff I don’t want & we don’t have a dispossable income.  Who does?  Other than 7 bands that I’ll purchase actual CDs from, 2 or 3 bands on iTunes, & then streaming, I don’t really want anything else.  Maybe 2 X 26 ounce bottles of rum a year but really that’s all.  Saving money for more important stuff should & will be a priority.  Exhibit A; Brewster’s health.  Exhibit B; We’d like to move to a house & not a condo.

I’ve looked into Harley Benton guitars quite a bit.  They’re really low priced knock offs of other brand name guitars.  They’re made somewhere in Asia & sell for $400 or less plus the shipping.  They look nice from a distance.  Some people say they’re great while others have received guitars with serious issues.  I think I’d avoid them.  I don’t want to pay $100 plus shipping to get a guitar that needs $200 worth of work to fix it.  Too many EXTREMELY random issues on the guitars they sell.

Practicing these songs.  I learn from this guy or mostly proper guitar tabs where I’ll have to change one little thing to make it right.

This guy’s AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  There are many more, a lot of stuff fell into place this week.  I still have to put all of the parts together for Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir”.  Maybe I’ll get brave & post some videos on the Facebook page soon?  That’s still a hard maybe.

Maybe I’m watching the news at the wrong time or people have learned to protest peacefully?  I hope the latter is true.  Nothing has changed other than more people are talking about racial injustice.  That’s a good starting point.  Now keep going!

The Toronto Blue Jays regular season starts on Friday July 24th.  I’ll be watching on TV as usual!

Spent a couple of hours learning all of this but the solo on Monday!  Tighten things up somewhat today & maybe tomorrow, then move on.  Scales & rhythm warm ups are always first!

Most of learning a song is memorizing the parts & order of them followed by putting everything together & making the transitions smooth.

Still July 1st as I write most of this.  Really upset/disappointed with myself & my 6 month results.  Kim fed me ice cream & beer.  I’m a light weight now when it comes to alcohol.  I’m on my 3rd & final beer of the evening, please excuse the following as I intend to leave it as is.

Well the 6 month total was TERRIBLE for me!  Lost 13 pounds, so where the hell was any of the muscle I put on?  I’m 40 years old & lighter than I was in 1999, but I still can’t fit a 38” waist?  I was wearing a 38” waist pair of jeans when I was working at 265 pounds.  TERRIBLE, DISAPPOINTING, FORGETTABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I feel like I just wasted 6 months!!!

I think the end of this video explains my saving for a mid-range PRS guitar, not a $7000 PRS.  The one I’m saving for is wired, heavy, & the neck feels like a Gibson Les Paul.  I love Les Paul style guitars, I have 2, neither are Gibson Les Paul guitars.  If I wanted a Gibson Les Paul it would cost me $1000 more, be a reissue, & have the same body shape of 2 of my current guitars.  That’s why I did extensive research on an already expensive guitar.

After my results of 6 months of hard work, I’m INCREDIBLY upset with myself & don’t even feel as though I deserve it.  Scale went the wrong way!  I was expecting 10 pounds of muscle added, not 13 pounds off.

A review of a ‘PRS style’ Harley Benton guitar LANGUAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I watched more videos on Harley Benton guitars aka really cheap copies of big brand name guitars.  Most videos on were guys in a room with 20-35 Harley Benton guitars that had nothing good to say about them.  I’m thinking “You’re complaining about a guitar company making guitars that cost $110 each after you’ve bought 20 of them.  It took you 20 guitars to realize they weren’t as perfect as the actual thing?”  People pointing out random flaws on every guitar, flaws that would be noticed by anyone who has played guitar for 5 years or more.  If I was a beginner, I would grab ONE & not care.  I was just laughing the whole way through!  Does it sound like an electric guitar?  Sure it does, something cheap but nice to learn on.

Nobody cares about what brand the guitar is other than the owner.  The guitar I played from 2001-February 2008 was a Tradition Les Paul.  The company no longer exists, great guitar that I played live for all but 3 or 4 of the 100s of live shows.

After watching a totally different PRS factory tour by the head of the S2 series, I’ve never been so certain on a guitar choice in my life!

I’m saving my pennies, it’s gonna happen!

Guitar rant over.  No further inebriated blogging!

I’m over my numbers on July 1st, I wasn’t looking at it the right way.  Many people can see the difference of added muscle.  The scale is just a number.  Comfort food & alcohol, I was fine the next day, however I ate other food my body isn’t used to the next evening & paid the price at 6:30 am Friday morning.  Really nice day outdoors but not inside me.  After 2:00 pm I avoided any & all food & liquid.  Sugar & I aren’t a good mix, I think I’ll stay clear of that for at least a few weeks!

My dad did manage to sell my mountain bike & Kim’s old one to my parents’ neighbors.  No need to take them to a pawn shop.  Into the guitar fund it goes!

Kim took 3 grocery bags of DVDs to pawn for me Saturday morning.  We also had tickets to a concert on July 3rd that was postponed due to Covid-19.  It was postponed until late January of 2021.  Sooner than I’d like so that was refunded & also added to the guitar savings.

I reaffirmed my decision on this evening of Saturday, July 4, 2020.  I’m going to continue the eating healthy, no caffeine, very little sugar/alcohol, very few (if any) TV/movie purchases, & far less music purchases.  All of this will continue after the purchase of the guitar, amplifier, & footswitch.  This will not only save us money but also make me healthier.  The exercise will either continue where it’s at or more than likely increase soon.

Of course I can think of another guitar I’d like.  Is it going to happen?  I’d say no on our budget!  Heck the guitar & amplifier purchases I’m saving for now could easily be pushed back if they happen at all.  Doesn’t mean I’ll stop saving money.

I tend to doubt myself & can be VERY critical of myself, always expecting more.  That was my Canada Day, July 1st.  Much more self-confident now & more determined than I was 6 months ago.

Yes, I practice a LOT!  I’m often found with a 1 liter bottle of water near me with a guitar in hand.  I said on January 1st that 2020 was going to be my year!  So despite all of the disastrous things going on this year, I turned 40 in January & I plan to have a spectacular year…..indoors.

After losing 13 pounds, which wasn’t what I wanted.  I realize that I have put on quite a bit of muscle.  I now have a left calf muscle, my arms, shoulders, & chest are more defined.  I was angry at myself for what was actually a good thing!  I told you I’m an idiot…….at least I have now!

I was energized & feeling great on Sunday.  I got up early made my eggs, fish, and a pitcher of vegetable juice for the week then vacuumed the house all before noon.  I was thinking that this will be a FANTASTIC start to the 2nd half of 2020.

I didn’t exercise Monday, I was lazy.  I woke up at 4 am rolled around while drifting in & out of sleep.  I woke up completely at 7:30 am & just stayed in bed until 11:00 am, didn’t want to do anything.  I then got up, ate, & practiced guitar

Some study a few years ago showed that overall metal music has a calming effect on listeners.  While I was progressively feeling worse after my July 1st post I listened to these 3 songs & felt SO much more relaxed and generally better about the entire ordeal.

Well I did it!  Coffee free & not even craving it.  Alcohol is paid for, so it’s here but I don’t need it.  I did have a gin & lime bubbly on the weekend just for something different.  No craving for it though.  What we have will last me until next year easily for the amount I plan to consume alcohol, then probably two 26 oz. bottles of rum a year after the stuff her is gone.  So for a longtime it’s been 3-5 liters of water a day & 3 or 4 cans of bubbly a week.  Now no coffee & very little alcohol, if any every 2 or 3 weeks.

I do feel even better now.  I wish I had done this before I had cancer.  Eating & drinking right & exercising daily.  Dropped the fat & I’ve definitely put on muscle!  I have a visible calf muscle on my left leg again.

This is part of my Tuesday & Thursday exercises after some yoga…

Curls (2)

Exercise of Tuesday morning June 9th.

This is already ordered & I’m VERY excited for it!  Especially know that I’m playing around with a guitar in DADGad tuning instead of the standard EADGbe tuning.

It’s all about saving for a guitar, & this is a REMARKABLY EXCELLENT side effect that will continue long after the purchase of the guitar!  I do get rather tired & a little tender at the end of the week.  Weekends seem to do the trick for recovery over the weekend.  Wednesday I got up at 5:30 am by the time Kim got up at 8:00 am I had emptied the dishwasher, had breakfast & finished my exercise.  Once she got up I had a snack & showered then practiced guitar for around 5 hours.  Thursday was rough though.  I layed in bed until 9:20 am just tired & sore.  As soon as I got up I hoovered my small breakfast & did my exercises!

S2 McCarty 594 Electric Guitar with Gigbag - Whale Blue

As far as relearning guitar goes, I’m at the point where I just have to repeat the same part over a couple hundred times to get my hands used to moving in that pattern.  It wasn’t like that before cancer.  Before it was more like “OK guys what should I learn for the show in a month?”  3 days later at rehearsal we’d put the song together.  When I was doing original stuff with my brother, some of it would take a few days or we’d at least get a rough idea of what the song(s) would sound like when finished.

I’d say in the last 2 or 3 months I practice guitar for 3-6 hours a day or until my shoulder gets sore.  Makes me happy & makes me think……sometimes too much!

Now let me explain the title.  I’m quite shy & quiet, until you know me & I’m comfortable.  I rarely make the effort to introduce myself to someone.  I’m typically quiet but approachable at the same time.  I’m uneasy that I might say something wrong & offend an individual, that is never my intent.  Being a frontman for a band was different.  I always at least tried to keep every show G rated.  Every show I go to, the language get’s REALLY old fast.

I’ll talk to you but I can guarantee that I won’t be starting the conversation.  If you’re a friend of a mutual friend, that conversation is easier & I might start it.  I like to talk once I know someone.

I know that “Big Wreck” will have a concert from last year in Nashville on

Also on will be “The Metal Concert Stream of the Year” with “In Flames”, “Trivium”, “Lamb of God”, & headliner “Megadeth”.  The actual tour was scheduled to start today.  I assume these will be performances from last year but I’m not certain.

I fell asleep to “Pearl Jam” the album “Gigaton”

I exercised to “Foo Fighters” the album “In Your Honour” disc 1

That’s what I’m talking about!  Get up before 7:40 am and get the exercise done before 9:20 am!

Our place has been off of the housing market since the end of March.  I was told we’d be off of the market when our initial & only option at the time was sold in October.  I had/have no intent to go through trying to sell our condo suite in the land of cheap vacant condos & now a global pandemic.  Someone that saw the house while it was listed wanted to view it Thursday evening.  As of the writing of this on Saturday we have not heard a word & I really don’t expect to.  If we end up getting a realistic offer, we have no place to go for under $390,000.  This entire idea of us moving just adds to my already REALLY $#%&^%$ high stress level.  A house for us to move into will cost us over $410,000 minimum now.  As far as the entire moving thing goes for me, MAYBE next year?

This is an unpredictable housing market without this pandemic going on.  I say we payoff more of our mortgage & see what it’s like next year or the year after?

It’s been discussed & I’ll be saving for this FINAL guitar all while eliminating anything & everything else I spend money on that’s not a necessity.  While awaiting anxiously, yet patiently, my already ordered and already once delayed PRS S2 guitar.  This distant future guitar does more but will cost less because of the model line it is in & I think it’s pretty.  Birthday & Christmas gifts from my family will be the same for me as before & for a few more years.  No gifts, just cash please?  Yeah I’m streaming Apple Music, might as well pay for Satellite Radio, more music I don’t own but keep paying for?

This won’t cost ½ as much as my ordered guitar because it’s an SE model…& then my guitar glass will be full!  We have some debt to pay off before this happens though.  I don’t want a lot of guitars, I do want each guitar to have an individual purpose.  What I will never understand is that many guitars, in this price range, from many different companies do NOT come with any type of case???  If it wasn’t the fact that I ordered a guitar for whenever & my Lackamoola, there are a few of these available through the same franchise in 2 stores in Ontario.  Ah well.—Aqua.htm

SE Paul's Guitar - Aqua

I ordered this beauty in January & it was to be here this month.  Before all of this Covid-19 stuff happened it was delayed until mid-August.  I haven’t heard anything since but I just assume it will be further delayed until maybe a self-purchased Christmas gift?  As for when I get it doesn’t really matter right now.  As long as anyone & everyone is safe & healthy, I can wait for a guitar.  Here’s a message from Paul Reed Smith himself from Thursday or Friday?

S2 Custom 22 Semi-Hollow Body Guitar w/Gig Bag - McCarty Sunburst

I know this guitar will be AMAZEBALLS whenever it gets here!  I was reading up on the difference between the 85/15 s pickups in this guitar vs. the TCI s pickups in the other.  Big difference which is exactly what I was looking for, along with the many other differences!  I read a bunch of manufacturing science you likely don’t want to hear about.  Google it if you want to?

I’ll post a reaction video on Facebook when I get this & a photo on here.  Maybe a play through later on but…

S2 Custom 22 Semi-Hollow Body Guitar w/Gig Bag - McCarty Sunburst

SE Paul's Guitar - Aqua

In retrospect you probably didn’t want to read about all of the other differences (which there are more of) that I wrote about.  Unless you’re a fussy guitar playing individual.

Do I need expensive/nice gear?  Nope, the stuff I have is great & gets used A LOT!  I missed out on making money & buying new gear.  That’s where the money would have gone to anyways, well especially now without kids.

I’d like to get a job so I’m not considered a “mooch” but I was never going to spend my money on cell phone, tablet, laptop, video camera, microphone, zoom, skype, facetime, etc.  I’ll likely need that stuff for an online job?  If I wanted that stuff outside of work, I’d have it.  All it has ever looked like to ME is a money grab that I don’t need/want.

Well, “Lamb of God’s” new album is delayed from the initial release date of May 8th until June 19th.  No shipping available because of Covid-19.  Not much anyone can do about that?

Still some music I’m waiting for to be released.  “Chevelle”, “The Pretty Reckless”, “Foo Fighters” & “Megadeth” are hoping to record soon.

Midnight Eastern Time Thursday night/Friday morning in North America is the release of “Trivium” What the Dead Men Say

I fell asleep to “Barenaked Ladies” the album “Gordon”

I exercised to “Chromeo” the album “Head Over Heels”

I REALLY need to stop watching/reading videos & reviews on this SE model PRS! “A breakthrough in pickup design”

“…huge P 90 sound…” BONUS right there!  These pickups don’t have the LOUD annoying hum that vintage P90 pickups are known for.

P90 double coil pickups for guitars were developed by Gibson in 1946.  They’re known for having a LOUD hum.  After that multiple double coil pickups were created without the hum and are now called _______ Humbuckers

The TCI pickups are only available in the guitars above.  I’m a casual fan of John Mayer’s music although he is a great guitarist “Born & Raised” is a GREAT album.  If he & Paul Reed Smith were involved in creating these pickups, I’m all in!

Yeah, I’m streaming music now & cutting back on whatever I can to get this SE aqua PRS.  I’ve researched & this is the best bang for my cash, & it has the different bells & whistles I’m looking for.  Hopefully within 2 or 3 years I’ll be able to get one, if they’re still making them?  Kim’s undecided if she wants to go on a trip.  If she decides she wants to, at least I’ll have some cash to help out.  Sure the TCI “S” pickups in the SE model don’t sound exactly the same as the TCI pickups in the Core model, but a Core model is WAY over any amount I could think of for a guitar.  Like a minimum of $4900 + tax!!!!!!!??????

SE Paul's Guitar - Aqua

I continue to look at other guitars, but nothing measures up to this one!  I’ve looked at Washburn, Gibson, Epiphone, Fender, Squier, Jackson, ESP, LTD, Yamaha, Music Man, Guild, Gretsch, Dean, Indio, Godin, Warmoth, Peavy, Ibanez, B.C. Rich, Chapman, Kiesel, Charvel, Tokai, Sahana, companies I’ve never heard of from places I’ve never heard of, & after all of that searching & researching I’m sticking with PRS.  The others aren’t bad by any means but I can’t play more than 6 electric guitars, so it might as well be the right one.  PRS, while expensive, have won me over as a company that pays close attention to detail.

Despite all of this talk about a future guitar purchase, I am SUPER PUMPED about the guitar I ordered in January with 85/15 “S” pickups.  PRS reproduced a pickup built in 1985 exactly & mass produced for certain guitars in 2015 hence 85/15 “S”.  The “S” just means they’re made in the oversea factory, which I believe is in Indonesia now.

Want to know why certain types of wood are chosen for certain parts of a guitar build?  Pull this video to the 8:40 minute mark and let Mr. Paul Reed Smith take you to school with a wooden xylophone!

Maple and mahogany are likely the most expensive woods used.  The SE line has a paper thin amount of maple, S2 line has ¼ inch, & the uber expensive Core line has ½ inch of maple on the top of the body.  The maple is baked in an oven @ 350F to remove any fluid from the wood, it is then glued to the body made of mahogany, then cut to the shape.—Aqua.htm

I just had a FANTASTIC idea!  The “Paul’s Guitar” SE costs $1300 + tax in Canada.  If all of you BEAUTIFUL & WONDERFUL people send me $5 I’ll be well on my way to getting this guitar!  I’m so SMRT!  Subscribers & casual readers feel free to pitch in!  My website tells me I have 207 subscribers, I’m quite positive the subscriber amount is far less (180?), so send in the cash!   I can’t even type it with a straight face!  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!  Keep your money!

Sunday evening I realized I need to kick this guitar stuff up a notch!  The first time I learned was because of “Foo Fighters”-“The Colour & the Shape” album.  I learned about 10/13 songs.  I’ve already got 2 ½ down, might as well learn the rest of the album & a few other songs.  I just need to focus on smaller portions of a song & put them together.  Intro, verse, chorus, bridge, solo, & the outro.  Learn each part & put it together.  Finish one or two songs, play them through each session & learn another.  Foo Fighters are great for learning rhythm & more!  Here I come!  This likely won’t happen as fast as I’d like it to, but it’s the most familiar stuff to me.  It’s not a matter of knowing what I’m doing, it’s more strengthening the muscles I need to do it.  The more I learn, the easier the next song becomes to learn.

I could be bitter & angry that I can’t do something I love as well as I used to be able to.  Being that upset & angry would get me nowhere.  I know that if I work at it, it’ll eventually come to me.  How do I know?  I said I was going to learn this song…

…as of Saturday I have the main riff & verse down.  It took me longer than I thought but I made it happen & it was completely new to me.  You’ve got more time than you’ll ever have (unless you have young kids), you can be angry that you’re stuck inside or use your time to focus on something positive & productive.  Whatever you end up doing, the choice is up to YOU.

In order to make some type of segue to the following Covid-19 stuff.  We’re all being told repeatedly to stay indoors, stay 6 or more feet away from others, & wash our hands.  You know what gets my hand muscles loose & ready to play guitar?  Washing my hands with warm soapy water!

Other than that, let’s get real for a bit.  Covid-19 is EVERYWHERE!  I very rarely listen to the radio.  I turned it on while sitting in the vehicle waiting for Kim & there was nothing but Covid-19 news.  I’m really tired of being told to stay inside, but I understand the need to get that out into the world.  There are likely numerous people who disobey the rules.  We could all sit around & call them names or hope they realize that they’re not just putting themselves at risk, but so many others as well.

I know it’s odd for most people to go with very little human contact & it can really bum a person out.  Almost everyone has a cell phone, a tablet, internet, face time, skype, zoom, etc.  If you’ve got it, you wanted it, now use it.  I thought nobody wanted to talk to anybody anymore “I’ll text you”.  Good luck, I don’t have a lot of that stuff, I don’t want it.  I call people or email them to see how they’re doing.  A lot of people have all of these ways to contact and interact with others but everyone’s depressed without human contact.  Might as well use what you have.

Remember that despite the efforts of others, your mood & attitude all boil down to what YOU make of the situation you’re in.  This is your time to decide if you can make it better for you & those around you or bring everyone around you down.  A friend, companion, spouse, therapist, etc. they can give you the tools to achieve what you want.  In the end YOU have to put those tools to use & make a difference to yourself.

Donald Trump estimates 100,000 – 240,000 deaths in America.  No one wants to see that or anywhere near that amount of deaths.  To avoid this & save lives is EXACTLY why everyone should listen to the health officials.

I mentioned that “I don’t want a guitar slapped together in a panic”.  More importantly I meant to say that I don’t want to see the death toll rise for any reason or excuse.  I can wait for a guitar, life is FAR more important!  My guitar was ordered on January 15th, it’ll get hear eventually.

Everybody wants instant gratification, I’m just as guilty of that as anyone.  My guitar was supposed to be here this month, as of March 2nd it was delayed until August.  I’m positive that with this virus stuff it’ll be delayed even more.  I’d like it to be here already, I’ll likely appreciate it more when it gets here because I’ve had to wait that much longer.  I know they have my order & waiting won’t hurt me.

Kim went to get groceries on the weekend.  I can’t tell you what life is like out there?  As the day progressed Kim’s mood went down.  She’s the cheerful optimistic one in this relationship.  It really started to bother her and I could understand why as she told me about the protocol at the grocery store.  All I could do was hold her.  Probably didn’t help that we finished “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+.  Great show, sad ending.

Kim, Brewster & I went for a drive on Sunday evening to roll down the windows & get some fresh air, made a HUGE difference.

I’ve got a handful of album releases I’m waiting for this year.  There are 2 that have release dates.  “Trivium” – “What the Dead Men Say” on April 24th & “Lamb of God” – “Lamb of God” on May 8th!  My sister-in-law’s birthday, followed by our 15th Anniversary, & then a Friday with some new “Lamb of God”

More album release dates to come that I’m waiting for anxiously!

“Testament” released a new album on Friday, I need to give it a good listen still.  I’ve listened to it sporadically over the weekend and really like it (Thrash Metal).  I don’t post reaction thoughts though, I still need to digest this one a bit!

I fell asleep to “Trivium” the album “The Sin and The Sentence”

I exercised to “Alter Bridge” the album “Walk the Sky”

I’d talk more about the sad loss of so many people because of this virus, but that seems redundant with it on EVERY media outlet EVERYWHERE!  I must say a HUGE heartfelt thank you to all of the 911 responders & health professionals busting their butts to keep us safe!

I complain too much!  Mostly about my lack of money.  I need to shut my yap, most people have the same problem, so we’re no different.  I also talk too much about guitars but that’s my hobby, so you’ll just have to deal with it.

Most guitar players will sell a guitar to get another.  That has never really made sense to me, something I’m positive I’d regret.  My acoustic guitar will always remain because it’s my only acoustic guitar.  My 4 electric guitars all have a distinct sound & pickups for a reason, even the Fender which, the more I play it, the more I like it!  That’s the only one I didn’t point out to someone.

Lots of guitar players have multiple guitars for many different reasons.  Different tunings, sounds, body shapes, brands, pickups, colours, etc.  My 3 electric 6 strings all sound different, have different pickups, colours, brands, & different body shapes.  My electric 7 string is obviously for stuff that requires a 7th string/lower tuning.  I don’t need to make a point of playing each one, I have all of those reasons to change it up!

I got my first guitar on my 21st birthday in 2001.  I got brain cancer 6 days after my 28th birthday.  I basically played for 6 years in 3 different bands.  I was always a singer first.  I learned guitar after singing in a band for around a year because guitar looked fun & I needed something to do with my hands.

Now that I’ve resumed playing after an almost 12 year hiatus due to cancer, things are WAY different.  Playing in a wheelchair is by far the biggest difference.  I didn’t realize how big of a deal posture was when playing guitar.  As of Thursday, I have that figured out finally.

When I got cancer, my body was so weak I couldn’t feed myself for a few years or even drink anything for that matter and swallowing was a gong show.  My nutrients was all through an IV drip.  I began drinking through a straw, meanwhile Kim & my parents had to feed me.

Now my right hand is fine, my left hand & arm are still noticeably weaker, but getting stronger everyday with my exercise & guitar playing.  Each time I learn something new on guitar I think “Wow that sounds much more difficult than it really is!”

When I was first playing guitar I had no clue as to what I was doing.  If I put my hands here in a certain shape I’d make the right sound & I learned, a bit, from there.  Now it’s all been physically brand new, while knowing SO much more about what I’m doing.  Before I’d have to look up the tab for each song, now I just need the chord to figure out the short riffs/hooks to a song.

I don’t think about what it is that I’m doing at the time, I think of that afterwards.  Really all I think about while playing is “Does this sound right in this part of the song?”  I tend to close my eyes if I’m not moving my hand & arm up & down the neck of the guitar & rely more on my ears.  The muscle memory is definitely coming along though!

There’s a guy on who always says “The perfect amount of guitars is, all of the guitars you own + 1”.  Maybe for him (20+ guitars including 5 high end PRS models) & other guitar players.  Fair enough he teaches guitar & makes extra cash with his youtube videos.  6 electric guitars & one acoustic are all I’d ever want.  If I couldn’t play every electric guitar I own within 1 ½ weeks, why would I have them?

Much like that rule that applies to EVERYTHING that’s not seasonal “If you haven’t used it in 6 months, why do you need it?”  This is another example for me of LESS IS MORE.

I have definitely decided to save up for this guitar & we’ll see what happens in a few years.  Brewster is on his pills, heart pill forever & a temporary water pill, as long as he has what he needs, we consider things good.  I won’t be getting this exact model of guitar, that’s this year’s model.  Hopefully something with the PRS TCI pickups (less gain), more electronic options, the bridge, an inexpensive SE model still (less Maple wood involved) & different PRS tuners.  Go to 2:20 minutes to hear what Paul Reed Smith wanted this guitar to have…

After 2 good days on Saturday & Sunday working through a few songs, I’m really happy with my progress.  I picked 10 songs to practice a few on each guitar, and so far things are good.  Here’s a sample of what I’ve picked to learn…

It’s REALLY good to have productive days like this!!!

The Toronto Blue Jays 1992 World Series highlights are being replayed.  I’m wearing my, once VERY large jersey, I got in 1992.  Yes, for Christmas of 2013? I asked to have Roberto Alomar’s name & #12 put on the back of it.  First Toronto Blue Jay player to go into the Hall of Fame!

What do I think of “Pearl Jam’s” new album “Gigaton”?  I really like it, I’ve been waiting for a looooong time for Pearl Jam to release a different album from anything in their catalogue while keeping the grungesque 1990s vibe at the same time.  Are you a fan?
