I fell asleep to “Trivium” the album “The Sin and The Sentence”

I exercised to “Alter Bridge” the album “Walk the Sky”

I’d talk more about the sad loss of so many people because of this virus, but that seems redundant with it on EVERY media outlet EVERYWHERE!  I must say a HUGE heartfelt thank you to all of the 911 responders & health professionals busting their butts to keep us safe!

I complain too much!  Mostly about my lack of money.  I need to shut my yap, most people have the same problem, so we’re no different.  I also talk too much about guitars but that’s my hobby, so you’ll just have to deal with it.

Most guitar players will sell a guitar to get another.  That has never really made sense to me, something I’m positive I’d regret.  My acoustic guitar will always remain because it’s my only acoustic guitar.  My 4 electric guitars all have a distinct sound & pickups for a reason, even the Fender which, the more I play it, the more I like it!  That’s the only one I didn’t point out to someone.

Lots of guitar players have multiple guitars for many different reasons.  Different tunings, sounds, body shapes, brands, pickups, colours, etc.  My 3 electric 6 strings all sound different, have different pickups, colours, brands, & different body shapes.  My electric 7 string is obviously for stuff that requires a 7th string/lower tuning.  I don’t need to make a point of playing each one, I have all of those reasons to change it up!

I got my first guitar on my 21st birthday in 2001.  I got brain cancer 6 days after my 28th birthday.  I basically played for 6 years in 3 different bands.  I was always a singer first.  I learned guitar after singing in a band for around a year because guitar looked fun & I needed something to do with my hands.

Now that I’ve resumed playing after an almost 12 year hiatus due to cancer, things are WAY different.  Playing in a wheelchair is by far the biggest difference.  I didn’t realize how big of a deal posture was when playing guitar.  As of Thursday, I have that figured out finally.

When I got cancer, my body was so weak I couldn’t feed myself for a few years or even drink anything for that matter and swallowing was a gong show.  My nutrients was all through an IV drip.  I began drinking through a straw, meanwhile Kim & my parents had to feed me.

Now my right hand is fine, my left hand & arm are still noticeably weaker, but getting stronger everyday with my exercise & guitar playing.  Each time I learn something new on guitar I think “Wow that sounds much more difficult than it really is!”

When I was first playing guitar I had no clue as to what I was doing.  If I put my hands here in a certain shape I’d make the right sound & I learned, a bit, from there.  Now it’s all been physically brand new, while knowing SO much more about what I’m doing.  Before I’d have to look up the tab for each song, now I just need the chord to figure out the short riffs/hooks to a song.

I don’t think about what it is that I’m doing at the time, I think of that afterwards.  Really all I think about while playing is “Does this sound right in this part of the song?”  I tend to close my eyes if I’m not moving my hand & arm up & down the neck of the guitar & rely more on my ears.  The muscle memory is definitely coming along though!

There’s a guy on www.youtube.com who always says “The perfect amount of guitars is, all of the guitars you own + 1”.  Maybe for him (20+ guitars including 5 high end PRS models) & other guitar players.  Fair enough he teaches guitar & makes extra cash with his youtube videos.  6 electric guitars & one acoustic are all I’d ever want.  If I couldn’t play every electric guitar I own within 1 ½ weeks, why would I have them?

Much like that rule that applies to EVERYTHING that’s not seasonal “If you haven’t used it in 6 months, why do you need it?”  This is another example for me of LESS IS MORE.

I have definitely decided to save up for this guitar & we’ll see what happens in a few years.  Brewster is on his pills, heart pill forever & a temporary water pill, as long as he has what he needs, we consider things good.  I won’t be getting this exact model of guitar, that’s this year’s model.  Hopefully something with the PRS TCI pickups (less gain), more electronic options, the bridge, an inexpensive SE model still (less Maple wood involved) & different PRS tuners.  Go to 2:20 minutes to hear what Paul Reed Smith wanted this guitar to have…

After 2 good days on Saturday & Sunday working through a few songs, I’m really happy with my progress.  I picked 10 songs to practice a few on each guitar, and so far things are good.  Here’s a sample of what I’ve picked to learn…

It’s REALLY good to have productive days like this!!!

The Toronto Blue Jays 1992 World Series highlights are being replayed.  I’m wearing my, once VERY large jersey, I got in 1992.  Yes, for Christmas of 2013? I asked to have Roberto Alomar’s name & #12 put on the back of it.  First Toronto Blue Jay player to go into the Hall of Fame!

What do I think of “Pearl Jam’s” new album “Gigaton”?  I really like it, I’ve been waiting for a looooong time for Pearl Jam to release a different album from anything in their catalogue while keeping the grungesque 1990s vibe at the same time.  Are you a fan?

MY EXERCISE FOR 2019.

Do you have a question about stage 4 brain cancer?  Ask if you do!

My 40th birthday is on January 30th.  On Facebook I am asking for people to make donations of any amount to the Canadian Red Cross.  If you’re not from Canada, please make a donation to your country’s Red Cross.  I had 3 brain surgeries.  Before I had cancer I would donate blood.  I don’t know how many pints of blood I received from others, but now I cannot donate my blood anymore.  Please send them any donation of money, blood, volunteer work, etc.  The amount of any donation will not matter, but will be VERY appreciated!

Well here it is my exercise for all of 2019.  Of course there are a handful of weeks where I did nothing.  As for travelling, I took a 6 hour car trip to Winnipeg for my great aunt’s 80th birthday celebration, spent 2 or 3 days in Winnipeg with family.  Went to the family cabin near Moose Jaw for about 4 days.  Then 2 nights at Kim’s parents’ place near Prince Albert. Other than that we were at home, exercising my butt off while Kim was at work, yet I still can’t walk?  Ah well, maybe in a few years.  All I have to show for this exercise is a much smaller belly & very lean muscle.

Most of my exercise totals will drop significantly this year.  I’m plan to focus more on quality than quantity.  Heavier weights, deeper squats, other squats, better/longer yoga, & much more cardio hopefully.  I’ve already increased the weights & added a few other exercises.  No point in waiting?

Curls (added later on in the year): 13,000

Leg lifts: 37,500

Crunches: 41,500

Tricep lifts (I stopped when I realized my yoga gave my triceps a good workout): 4,820

Shoulder raises (added later on in the year): 4,970

Back flexes: 18,300

Pushups (I do some if I have any energy left): 13,100

Squats (changed to make them more difficult after a few months): 21,970

About 3 or 4 hours of stretching & yoga a week.  My resolutions for 2020, practice going down and up a flight of stairs 3-6 times once a week & seriously improve on the guitar.

After all of that, I’ve seriously trimmed down from 265 into the hospital, 210 while in the hospital & physiotherapy, to 280 after eating nothing but garbage out of the hospital to my current weight of 226 pounds as of January 1st, 2020.  I’d consider the last 7 ½ years as prep work for what’s about to come.  It’s like I was doing cardio & now I’ll do more muscle work while continuing with some cardio.  I was 185 pounds when I graduated high school, for me to be under 210 is unthinkable.  I’d be a sack of bones.  I’m 6’1” on a large frame.  225-230 pounds should do, but it’s just a number.  To put all of this into perspective my T-Shirts are drooping around my neck & quite baggy.  I’m wearing some T-Shirts from 2006.  I was surprised with my weight!  I haven’t been that weight in 20 years!

Measurements as of January 1, 2020.

Stomach: 44 ¼”

Biceps; Left 14 ¼”, Right 14 ¾”

Chest: 45”

Upper leg; Left 22 ½”, Right 23 ½”

Calves; Left 14 ¾”, Right 14 ½”

Most of those exercise have changed, will change, or will be eliminated.  Back flexes are by far the most difficult!  Lay flat on the floor on your stomach, arms out to the sides, feet shoulder length apart, then lift all 4 limbs off of the ground at the same time for 2 seconds.  I do that 3 days a week, along with other stuff.  Trust me, I’m not ripped at all & I’m pasty white.

I don’t tan, I burn!  There’s a window of 30 seconds for me between burning to a crisp or remaining blindingly white.  I choose to be extremely pale rather than being in pain looking like a boiled lobster.

I play guitar at home now as opposed to playing on stage, for me, less is more.  I used to have a 4 X 12” cabinet of speakers, a Randall amplifier, 8 or 9 effect pedals, & 2 electric guitars.  I rarely played my acoustic guitar live.  I gave my big amplifier & cabinet away when I got cancer.  I’m down to 4 pedals now, gave a couple away when I got sick & sold a couple to help pay for the practice amplifier I use now.  Now I have 3 electric guitars, one I got in the hospital signed by Ian Thornley of Big Wreck, the other 2 that I had before & my acoustic guitar.  Yes, every guitar is tuned differently, otherwise it would be pointless to have them.  No frills to see here.  I’m going to order the PRS guitar in the summer, we’re saving for it.  As for the Limited Edition Epiphone 7 string guitar, maybe a few years down the road, if I’m still into metal music.  If I ever get a 7 string guitar, I hope those are still in production.  I’m getting anxious for the PRS guitar, still need to save though.  Got up and procrastinated by taking a broken guitar effect pedal apart, cleaned it, put it back together, & it now works.  10 minutes saved me the $120 I paid for it 19 years ago.  I am so not a handy person, never have been.

https://www.prsguitars.com/index.php/electrics/model/s2_custom_22_semi_hollow_2020   I’m going to order it in a McCarty Sunburst finish!

Better look at it and a review of the 2019 version.  Pretty much the same guitar, I’ll be ordering a different colour though.

The more research I do on this guitar, the more I want it.  It will be like a combination of my other 3 electric guitars plus other highlights I don’t have.  Happy Belated 40th to me in the summer!

No I can’t play like that yet.  I was a very simple rhythm player that played the chords, hook, & sang.

I eat the same thing for breakfast & lunch every day, & I’m happy with it, I can maintain it & have for quite a while.  I get up at about 7:30 am, feed Brewster then I get my breakfast.  One or two hard boiled eggs, a small glass of vegetable juice that I make a pitcher of on the weekend, a piece of fruit (usually an apple), and a liter of water with some apple cider vinegar in it.  7 days a week I have 3 to 5 liters of water, 6 on the odd occasion.  I exercise, have a small snack of yogurt usually, hit the shower.  By the time I’m out, it’s time for lunch.  Lunch is one or two lettuce wraps with some Dijon mustard & turkey deli meat.  Check my email, practice guitar, & have a snack of crackers & hummus.  Then I watch about an hour of TV or a bit more and Kim is home for supper.  That’s a typical day for me.  It’s a routine I have gotten used to & get upset with myself if I miss my exercise in the morning.

Musically, I only made it to 4 big name concerts this year.  One of them was a Christmas family get together type of event.

I saw “Lynyrd Skynyrd” here in the spring.  They played at the arena here.

“The Watchmen” were at Casino Regina in October

“Big Wreck” was here at Casino Regina in mid-November

My mother got tickets for 7 of us to see “Boney M” at the Conexus Arts Center, a theater, on December 10th.

Do you have a question about stage 4 brain cancer?  Ask if you do!

Music throughout the weekend.  “Foo Fighters”, “Lynyrd Skynyrd”, “Randy Bachman”, & “Metallica”.

On Friday, my dad came to take Brewster & I to my parents’ place a little after 1:00 pm.  Hung out there, played some cards with my cousin & a family friend, Karen, who just had orthoscopic knee surgery.  Kim came after work, as well as Ray, Karen’s better half…………….other half.  Probably safer if I say “other”.

Mom & dad cooked a prime rib sirloin, asparagus, potatoes that I avoided, & another tasty dish that was so good I forget what it was?

Stayed for a bit after a dessert of chocolate & peanut butter ice cream.  Had a few beverages & came home.

Saturday at noon was another pre-season baseball game, & Saturday evening was the concert.  On their Farewell tour with Randy Bachman as the opener.  I finally saw them play “Free Bird”!

We were & still are busy today.  I gave blood for a blood test, nothing crucial, just for a run of the mill doctor appointment.  We grabbed some food at Tim Horton’s.  We were then going to see our “niece” play at a piano recital.  She’s sick today so that was a no go.

Kim picked up some groceries while I waited in the car, we picked up Brewster who was staying with Sherry & James.

I made a juice for the week & the eggs just finished in the instant pot.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD

I really paid attention to them beginning in 2007, when I would take my iPod to work.  I’d listen to their double album of “Greatest Hits” & the new “Dream Theater” album “Systematic Chaos” close to 3 hours of my day, then I’d either find something else to listen to or work in silence with noise blocking earmuffs on.  Sometimes I’d just replay both of those albums.

Of course “Free Bird” was the encore song!

Do you have a question about stage 4 brain cancer?  Ask if you do!

Music throughout the weekend.  “Dead Sara”, “Barenaked Ladies”, “Testament”, & “Matthew Good Band”

Friday ended with us watching “Hannah Gadspy” a Tasmanian comedienne.  It was more of a “Ted Talk” with humour added.  She spoke about what had gotten her to this point in her life, sexual abuse, 2 rapes, being a lesbian, coming out of the closet, etc.  Very entertaining.  She went on a rant at the end.  Kim was crying.  Lots of highs & lows throughout the show.  Really good show!  Quite a few “F – Bombs” throughout the show though.  None in this trailer though…

Saturday we went out in the afternoon Kim needed to take some photos for her photo class, dropped off Brewster & I.  She went for groceries.  I got this post started.  Kim came home with the groceries so I got moving & made my vegetable juice for the week.

Saturday evening we ordered in some Chinese food for supper & rented the movie “Boy Erased” about a son who is gay & his father is a pastor at a Christian Church.  The movie starts out with the son going to his first of 12 days at a conversion center.  I think this movie would be great if you also watch the movies “Red State” & “Spotlight”.  “Red State” could be difficult to watch with all of the language & violence.  “Boy Erased” is based on a true story.  I think every religious leader needs to wake up & see this movie.

I believe in God & consider myself a Christian. You know that part in the bible that says ‘…bring us your rich, poor, weak, & strong etc…’  Do we have to spell it out for others?  Do we need to adjust it to say “Everyone” including the LGBTQ community?  I really don’t care if you’re a part of a different religion, race, or sexuality or anything else.  Are you a good person?  If you are let’s hang out & be friends.

I was fired up watching that movie.  A lot of me commenting on the utter fear/stupidity of all of the homophobic characters.  It’s from 2018 and finishes saying there are still 700,000 conversion camps still in operation.  I don’t believe that sexuality is a choice, I believe it’s how you were born.  I didn’t choose to be straight, that’s how I was born.   Who makes gay people?  Straight people!

Woke up for lunch when Kim popped her head in the bedroom & said she was going to “Tim Horton’s”.  She’s done the laundry I believe, just eggs to hard boil & Kim wants to take some pictures in the house.  She left for “Tim Horton’s” & Brewster found that to be the perfect time to throw up twice once I made my way into the kitchen.  Poor guy, at least he knew to get off of his blanket & bed to throw up on the laminate floor.

Metal screaming is not easy.  You may not like it, but don’t say it’s easy!

I’ll believe it when I see it.  Does this mean Tool will start thinking about song ideas?

Just had to watch “Trivium” accept “Grammy Nominee Awards” of screen.  I’m assuming this is because they are a metal group, so they aren’t main stream music, ugh!

LYNYRD SKYNYRD

I will get to see them this year here in Regina!  I can’t wait!  When I was working I’d put on my iPod & just go.  One “Dream Theater” album “Systematic Chaos” was just released & “Lynyrd Skynyrd’s” double album of ‘Greatest Hits’ & I was good for 5 – 6 hours.  I’ll see them & my parents are anxious to see Randy Bachman.  I’ve been a ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ fan for a while, since 2006 or so.  All I have is their Greatest Hits album though.

5 day weekly total; 600 pushups, 360 tricep pushups, 150 back flexes, 400 leg lifts, 200 crunches, 240 squats.  Some walking also.

I fell asleep to “In Flames” the album “Colony”

I exercised to “Lynyrd Skynyrd” a double album of their Greatest Hits

BOOOOO!  No new wheelchair until August 28th!  BOOOOOO!

I now know what my problem has been all week.  Monday & Tuesday were the worst days of the week.  It got better as the week progressed.  Sunday night & Monday night I didn’t sleep well at all.  I actually had a nap on Wednesday afternoon, I fell asleep very quickly.  I’m usually wide awake for an hour when I hit the hay.  I was out cold on Wednesday afternoon, & at bedtime the last few nights.  Today I felt more like myself.  “Exhausted” from my workout, but it’s the weekend!

I would love to take a break but I really don’t know how to relax, so a break won’t help in that respect, & a break means more difficult work to get to where I am physically.

Many people have no clue what I can or can’t do.  Fair enough, I surprise myself sometimes regarding what I can or can’t do.  If I can’t do something on my own, I’ll ask for help & approach it a different way on my own next time, if I can’t do it on my own I’ll ask for help again, etc.  After multiple attempts I’ll decide if I need help each time or if I can do it on my own.

Blu-ray, DVD, & possibly 4K on September 7th!

REALLY!  I wish I was ½ that good!

Keep Calm & wait patiently new Tool is not finished yet.  It’s been 12 years, we can all wait some more.

I googled apple iTunes regarding the elimination of downloads from the iTunes store & found nothing solid that it will continue to exist or be phased out early next year.  Every link denounced the previous link.  So, I’m not sure what’s true & what’s not?  There are so many streaming sites out there, you’d think Apple would keep a download site open?  I don’t know about the cost of offering both streaming & downloading.  I personally would prefer to own my music through downloading it rather than streaming it.  Call me any name you like, I’ll cross that bridge if it happens.

“Opeth will release Garden of the Titans: Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on November 2nd via Moderbolaget Records / Nuclear Blast Entertainment. This historic event was captured for the DVD, Blu-Ray and Vinyl formats during their performance May 11th, 2017 at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, CO. Both the DVD and Blu-ray formats include CDs containing the audio as well.”

Yep, I’ve struggled with depression for most of my life.  There is no shame if you need to talk to someone, even a complete stranger.  I’m on anti-depressants, no shame in that either.

Unwritten rule in the MLB!  You NEVER throw a fastball, for that matter a 97mph fastball, at a player!  The pitcher got a slap on the wrist with a 6 game suspension.  He’ll miss 1 start as a starting pitcher.  I say “OK, your seasons over!”

If you don’t want to pitch to him, give him an intentional walk or lob a curve ball at him if you’re angry.

“Got my ‘geek’ on”

Yes, we bought “Avengers: Infinity War” on Tuesday, & watched it for the first time EVER that night.  Great popcorn movie!  Check your brain at the door & be very entertained!  I did have a few minor issues with it though, well 3 if were keeping track.

The Story Line.

I hope George Lucas got some royalties for a portion of the writing.  I was thinking “Wow, I’ve seen a very similar story line throughout the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy.”  Father saves his child while the child must fight against father.

SCENE STEALING

Did they actually steal an early scene from ‘Batman vs. Superman’?  Near the beginning of the film?  Tony Stark runs into the street to find nothing but mayhem & everyone running for their life.  Same scene almost frame by frame of Bruce Wayne running into mayhem at the beginning of ‘Batman vs. Superman’.

VILLAINS

The main villain has an army much like the villain in ‘Justice League’.  The army in “Avengers: Infinity War” looked much like the ones in ‘Stranger Things, season 2’.  Maybe I was thinking too much?  These 3 things stuck out like a sore thumb to me, blatant rip-offs that they didn’t even try to hide.

Those were the only things about the movie that bothered me.  Other than that it was a FANTASTIC movie!  I enjoy both comic book titans, Marvel & DC.

I exercised to “Slipknot” the album “5 The Gray Chapter”

500 crunches, 500 leg lifts, 375 pushups, 200 back flexes, & 25 minutes of planking.

That’s 100 crunches, 100 leg lifts, 75 pushups, 40 back flexes, & 5 minutes of planking each working day.

I think I figured out a portion, maybe all about a re-occurring dream I’ve been having since I was in the WRC.

I continually dream that I’m late for high school & I have an English paper that’s WAY overdue.  I get to school & have no clue as to what my locker combination is.

In University in 1999 my grandmother died of breast cancer.  I was a mess at the time.  I skipped out on an English final & drove to Moose Jaw & back instead.  With the 3rd Foo Fighters’ album that had just been released in November blasting the entire time.  My grandmother passed away on December 5th, 1999.

I guess that dream is more about me having some type of unfinished business to deal with?  Maybe it’s nothing & I’m reading too much into it?

No Trump talk!  You know what I think about him & you’re entitled to your own take on him!  I have never & will never condone violence to ANYONE.  If I thought it would change anything I’d give Trump a slap upside the head.

I’m typically not a political person.  Canadian politics bore me & I choose not to vote.  If I lived in the USA that would be different.  I watch too much CNN, since watching Trump lead the USA is much like his campaign x 100.

THAT’S ALL FOR THE CANCER TALK FOR NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s August, there’s very little music being released & not much for music news but here’s what I could find.

Audio interview with Chris Adler, drummer for Lamb of God.

Audio interview with Corey Taylor, singer for Stone Sour & Slipknot.

Audio interview with Royal Blood.

Poor camera man!  Kim & I just laughed & laughed & laughed………..

When I was working, I’d listen to my iPod a double album of “Lynyrd Skynyrd” their Greatest Hits & “Systematic Chaos” by Dream Theater, or the odd podcast.  One ear bud in my right ear, other one down my shirt.  Noise cancelling headphones on.  Those 2 albums would pretty much last my 8 hour shift.

A 2nd song from Jack Johnson!!!!!

Jose Bautista is too old to be the face of the franchise, he’ll probably ask for too much next year whoever he signs with & he’s a whiner.  Have fun on the Free Agent market at the end of the year, if you’re still with the Blue Jays at the end of August.

If Jose Bautista can hit 30 home runs this year, I still don’t think I’d renew his contract of $18,000,000.  Troy Tulowitzki & Jose Bautista would be the first of many players I’d try to dump on whoever wants to pay for a name.  Right there is $38,000,000 off the books of players not living up to their contracts!

My album of the year for whatever year it was, was “Nothing but Thieves” self-titled debut album.  Their 2nd album is being released on September 8th this year & here are the 3 singles they have released thus far…

It’s not close to hard rock, rock, or metal.  Lots of people my age & younger will not like this group.  I’m OK with that, for any music I listen to, I never said you had to like it.

August 25th new Queens of the Stone Age, September 8th Nothing But Thieves, Alter Bridge anthology, & Jack Johnson, September 15th Foo Fighters.  After that, who knows?

I fell asleep to “Lamb of God” their recent album “VII: Sturm Und Drang”

I exercised to “Ben Harper” the album “Call it What it is”, then “Muse” the album “Black Holes & Revelations”

Anyone who has been reading this knows I’m very anti-cell phone.  I don’t have a problem with a cell phone really, it’s more with the way some people choose to use them.  If I’m at a concert & someone is taking a video in my line of sight to the stage, please DON’T do that.  I paid as much as you did to watch a concert.  Not through your 4” screen on your cell phone.  If you want to video a song or 2 go ahead, take 3 or 4 pictures.  Please learn that other people are there & not taking a video of the entire show like you are.  Ask people around you if you’re blocking their view of the stage.  If you want to sit at the show & text with someone the entire time, that’s fine.  I don’t understand why you’d pay for a ticket to chat with people who aren’t there, but if that’s what you want to do, that’s fine with me.  Everyone will use their cell phone differently.  Just please learn live show etiquette?  YOU have every right to use your phone as you choose, maybe make sure it’s not a distraction to others near you?

If I get a cell phone, I’ll likely use it differently than you do.  I’ll use it my way & you can use it your way.  If we are bothering others, we’d better ask if how we’re using it is a problem.  You’re told to turn off your phone in theaters before the movie starts.  I think that rule should be at any live venue as well?

Consequence of Sounds review of the movie “Inferno”

The 3rd movie of the 4 book series of “The Da Vinci Code” which is actually the 2nd book.  The “Angels & Demons” book came first, & was infinitely better than the movie.

Another review of the new “Alter Bridge” album “The Last Hero”.  LANGUAGE!!!!  Seems a though any& every “Alter Bridge” fan loves their 2nd album “Blackbird”.  It’s a good album but I’d say it’s the weakest of their 5 studio releases.

This song below was voted to have the best guitar solo of all time?  No mention of “Free Bird” by “Lynyrd Skynyrd” in the top 10 of the reader poll by “Guitar Player” magazine.

I thought this was hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
