I fell asleep to “Trivium” the album “What the Dead Men Say”

I exercised to “Foo Fighters” a collection of roughly 100 B-Sides & Rarities.

Welcome back to the program!  You’re here so if you like what you see, might as well subscribe?  Either on Facebook or with your email in the bottom right corner, it’s really that easy & it’s free!  I know you want to tell your friends, go ahead!

…and why are metal & rock fans considered to be terrible people?  I’m in a wheelchair & typically wearing a “Lamb of God” hoodie or a metal T-Shirt.  Before my cancer I was stopped countless times for a brief conversation, & even since the same has happened as well as any aid is always offered.  Even in the summer of 1999 I broke my nose at an outdoor rock music festival, a path cleared since my face was gushing blood & I was immediately directed to the First Aid tent.  Nobody was fighting, I voluntarily went into the mosh pit.

Another myth to dispel!  When I started playing shows live & being a front man of a bar rock band yes, I’d take a beer or 2 on stage with me.  I was never intoxicated though.  After a while I switched to taking 4 small water bottles on stage with me & I often was chewing gum.  The day of a live show or doing a recording was a day of no milk, juice, or alcohol until after a show probably around 1:30 am or later.  No I don’t any drugs or smoke anything either.  Just because of the music I played has nothing to do with how I live my life.  I’m not speaking for everyone, but it’s really not that common in Regina.

If I had no obligations that evening & the next day, I drank heavily.  Kim’s brother-in-law & I would often split an 18 pack of beer in an evening & do it again the next night.  This was before I got cancer.

In that way cancer was a serious “wake up call”.  There’s rarely any alcohol in our fridge, a few craft beer once in a while. Our liquor cabinet has 3 bottles of rum, we’re out of gin at the moment & the little amount of stuff Kim has a drink of in the summer.  Only one of the bottles of rum is mine.  One is uber expensive rum my dad keeps here & the other is my sister-in-law’s rum of choice.

Kim lives on coffee & tea, while I hoover water all day & perhaps a can of Bubbly carbonated water later on.  Little alcohol on the weekend sometimes.  Even during this quarantine I don’t drink alcohol until Friday evening & Saturday evening.  I don’t want to & I don’t have the time.  If I have any free time, I’m probably practicing guitar…sober, ALWAYS!

My extended family pokes fun at me if I’m holding an alcoholic beverage & they can’t understand me “Chris, you’ve lost your peech!”  Truth be told, I didn’t have much of it to begin with, HAHAHAHA!  They have enough trouble understanding me sober.  I wonder why I only drink more when they’re around???????  HAHA!

I guess I should make a correction regarding previous exercise weekly totals.  The last 3 or 4 weeks I was adding wrong regarding the number of curls I do in 2 days, it’s actually 175/day, so 350 a week.

Watching the local news, our province of Saskatchewan, Canada will be gradually opening on Monday, May 4th.  The first of 5 reopening phases.  After the second phase happens on May 18th, it’ll be a wait & see what happens next scenario.  Let’s hope for the best or we’re right back where we started.

I’m all for everyone staying in quarantine until June or even mid-July.  All you’ve been hearing EVERYWHERE is “flatten the curve”, OK so why are we going to start a gradual reopening?  The curve should be flatter for a weaker 2nd wave.  I’m inside pretty much all of the time anyway & not many people like to visit a condo.  I say better safe than sorry, what do I know though, I’m not a politician or health official.  Just because the amount of new cases has leveled off for a few days isn’t really something we want.  Don’t we want them to significantly decrease?  Saskatchewan & other provinces begin to slowly open on May 4th, WHY?  “Is everybody going crazy?”

https://regina.ctvnews.ca/5th-covid-19-related-death-in-sask-majority-of-12-new-cases-in-far-north-1.4913232

As with every TV show I recorded “The Grammy Salute to Prince”.  I was watch ing it on the weekend & realized that I don’t listen to Prince enough, & after watching the special I had forgotten how much of his stuff I love hearing.  Of course Foo Fighters performed their cover of “Darling Nikki” from the “Purple Rain” album.

NOT FOR KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It likely wasn’t the first cassette I bought in the early 1990s, but Price’s “Diamonds & Pearls” got a TON of air time on my cassette player.

I’m not a fan of NFL football but I watched the Super Bowl halftime show in 2007 just to see Prince & he covered Foo Fighters!

Ordered in January but who knows if I’ll get it this year?  I’m anxious yet I completely understand.

200 Shoulder raises/Chest presses w/ 10 pound dumb bells

600 Crunches

600 Leg lifts

300 Squats

300 Back flexes

2 days of yoga

5:03 minutes of planking over 6 planks.  The first 3 were rather short takes where I’d finish a 30 second plank, then I hear Kim say “Oops, I took a picture”?  Or some type of oops.  I’ll put my planking videos from Wednesday to today on the Facebook page?  Today’s video hasn’t come to the cloud yet record high for me of 1:39 minutes.

There won’t be any stairs during this virus stuff.  I don’t really want to touch a public railing or clean them before & after I’m done.

I fell asleep to “Trivium” the album “What the Dead Men Say”

I exercised to “Big Wreck” the album “…but for the sun”

You’re here if you like what you see, might as well subscribe?  Either on Facebook or with your email in the bottom right corner, it’s really that easy & it’s free!

My mantra for the year has been & still is, if I have to say “I can’t” that’s not the way to say it.  I must say “I can’t yet”.  Don’t cut yourself short!

I said on Tuesday’s post that “I’d like to get a job so people don’t think I’m a “mooch”.  I was talking with Kim this week about this.  Specifically I asked “Do you think I earn my $27,000-$28,000 disability check each year?”  She see’s me busting my butt 5 days a week.  She says I earn it.  I don’t have the time to waste getting comfy on the couch & watching TV all day.  I record EVERYTHING.  If I don’t have time to watch it, which is typical for most shows, I watch it when I have time or on the weekend.

I don’t exercise for fun, although it does feel pretty good after despite me feeling “exhausted” after.  I started planking once a day & Kim has been taking videos of me.

I don’t want to be known as someone that sits around all day, watches TV & movies & does nothing else.  Sure the pay is preety sad, but on the flip side, it’s for me to get better.  So all of those exercises at the top of the page that you might skip, that’s my work week.  I start every morning, 5 days a week with 1 ½ – 2 hours of exercise.  2 days of weights & yoga, & 3 days of everything else.  That’s my job & I take it seriously.  Since January when I measured my muscles & weighed myself, even I can see a difference.  I’ll do another round of measurements & weight again in June so you can tell I’ve been doing something.

If I wasn’t physically handicapped we would likely have had a child.  I physically couldn’t handle a young kid 24/7.  Everything an able bodied person does easily takes twice the amount of energy out of me.  Kim cleans the kitchen in 30 minutes and she’s tired.  I clean the same kitchen in 45 minutes and I’m sweating.

Every day before a week of work starts, I make my pre-made boiled eggs, pitcher of vegetable juice & bake my frozen fish.  My license is indefinetely suspeded by my doctor.  Kim is the one that gets groceries for us.  Kim does a WHOLE BUNCH more.  Everything we do is for both of us other than our personal hobbies.  Kim’s big on photography & is now doing it as part of her job!

STAY INSIDE PEOPLE!  I think this speaks for itself?!  The length of your hair shouldn’t matter, especially if you’re inside?

……and people constantly used to ask me “Why do you not want to go to Las Vegas?”  I know not every American is this way, but these are the citizens that are typically on American National news.  I was watching Canadian National news & Regina local news on Thursday, constantly frowning & shaking my head in disgust.  America starts its gradual opening today & on May 4th Canada will too.  Why?  Is another month of isolation going to kill us or will the Covid-19 stuff kill us?  Which do you think is more likely?

https://regina.ctvnews.ca/first-phase-of-re-opening-sask-economy-to-begin-on-may-4-1.4908473?fbclid=IwAR1JpS_GXg5w195XiotrZzgapI5v7cGRl66q6Ok3uCIpw9b1Ahq8oS3Xv2Q

Globally 0.06% of the population has died of Covid-19.  Some countries have yet to go 24 hours without a new case.  This is according to the W.H.O. website as of Thursday afternoon.  Yes, North America has a privilege in the world.  Are our Governments out of money?  Why are we reopening if the confirmed cases aren’t 0% without a vaccine?  I’m not trying to be an alarmist by any means, I know things will return to some type of new normal eventually.  This seems a bit premature, especially when we’ve been told there is a second wave of this virus coming after reopening.

I don’t even like having to clarify this since it shows my ignorance so well.  Kim pointed out to me that it could come off as though I’m looking for anybody to buy a guitar for me.  Not the case at all, it’s just something I really enjoy doing & talking about, much like my father about rum, electronics, music, etc.  To be VERY CLEAR I INTEND TO SAVE FOR THE GUITAR.  Besides, that aqua colour will really bring out the blue in my eye……& the black satin back will bring out the colour of my iPatch!

There were SO many other people that needed/deserved help before Covid-19 happened & now that it has, there are even more.  I’m alive & well, people I chat with regularly are doing well.  As long as that stays the same, everything is OK.  I hope this helps put things into perspective for everyone at this time.

YAY “Trivium” day!

“Lamb of God” may have delayed their album release until June but they released a new song from it.

I fell asleep to “Pearl Jam” the album “Gigaton”

I exercised to “Foo Fighters” the album “In Your Honour” disc 1

That’s what I’m talking about!  Get up before 7:40 am and get the exercise done before 9:20 am!

Our place has been off of the housing market since the end of March.  I was told we’d be off of the market when our initial & only option at the time was sold in October.  I had/have no intent to go through trying to sell our condo suite in the land of cheap vacant condos & now a global pandemic.  Someone that saw the house while it was listed wanted to view it Thursday evening.  As of the writing of this on Saturday we have not heard a word & I really don’t expect to.  If we end up getting a realistic offer, we have no place to go for under $390,000.  This entire idea of us moving just adds to my already REALLY $#%&^%$ high stress level.  A house for us to move into will cost us over $410,000 minimum now.  As far as the entire moving thing goes for me, MAYBE next year?

This is an unpredictable housing market without this pandemic going on.  I say we payoff more of our mortgage & see what it’s like next year or the year after?

It’s been discussed & I’ll be saving for this FINAL guitar all while eliminating anything & everything else I spend money on that’s not a necessity.  While awaiting anxiously, yet patiently, my already ordered and already once delayed PRS S2 guitar.  This distant future guitar does more but will cost less because of the model line it is in & I think it’s pretty.  Birthday & Christmas gifts from my family will be the same for me as before & for a few more years.  No gifts, just cash please?  Yeah I’m streaming Apple Music, might as well pay for Satellite Radio, more music I don’t own but keep paying for?

This won’t cost ½ as much as my ordered guitar because it’s an SE model…& then my guitar glass will be full!  We have some debt to pay off before this happens though.  I don’t want a lot of guitars, I do want each guitar to have an individual purpose.  What I will never understand is that many guitars, in this price range, from many different companies do NOT come with any type of case???  If it wasn’t the fact that I ordered a guitar for whenever & my Lackamoola, there are a few of these available through the same franchise in 2 stores in Ontario.  Ah well.

I ordered this beauty in January & it was to be here this month.  Before all of this Covid-19 stuff happened it was delayed until mid-August.  I haven’t heard anything since but I just assume it will be further delayed until maybe a self-purchased Christmas gift?  As for when I get it doesn’t really matter right now.  As long as anyone & everyone is safe & healthy, I can wait for a guitar.  Here’s a message from Paul Reed Smith himself from Thursday or Friday?

S2 Custom 22 Semi-Hollow Body Guitar w/Gig Bag - McCarty Sunburst

I know this guitar will be AMAZEBALLS whenever it gets here!  I was reading up on the difference between the 85/15 s pickups in this guitar vs. the TCI s pickups in the other.  Big difference which is exactly what I was looking for, along with the many other differences!  I read a bunch of manufacturing science you likely don’t want to hear about.  Google it if you want to?

I’ll post a reaction video on Facebook when I get this & a photo on here.  Maybe a play through later on but…

S2 Custom 22 Semi-Hollow Body Guitar w/Gig Bag - McCarty Sunburst

SE Paul's Guitar - Aqua

In retrospect you probably didn’t want to read about all of the other differences (which there are more of) that I wrote about.  Unless you’re a fussy guitar playing individual.

Do I need expensive/nice gear?  Nope, the stuff I have is great & gets used A LOT!  I missed out on making money & buying new gear.  That’s where the money would have gone to anyways, well especially now without kids.

I’d like to get a job so I’m not considered a “mooch” but I was never going to spend my money on cell phone, tablet, laptop, video camera, microphone, zoom, skype, facetime, etc.  I’ll likely need that stuff for an online job?  If I wanted that stuff outside of work, I’d have it.  All it has ever looked like to ME is a money grab that I don’t need/want.

Well, “Lamb of God’s” new album is delayed from the initial release date of May 8th until June 19th.  No shipping available because of Covid-19.  Not much anyone can do about that?

Still some music I’m waiting for to be released.  “Chevelle”, “The Pretty Reckless”, “Foo Fighters” & “Megadeth” are hoping to record soon.

Midnight Eastern Time Thursday night/Friday morning in North America is the release of “Trivium” What the Dead Men Say

200 Shoulder raises/Chest presses w/ 10 pound dumb bells

400 Crunches

400 Leg lifts

200 Squats

200 Back flexes

2 days of yoga

There won’t be any stairs during this virus stuff.  I don’t really want to touch a public railing or clean them before & after I’m done.

I fell asleep to “Haley Williams” the EP “Petals for Armor”

I exercised to “Pearl Jam” the album “Gigaton”

My curl repetitions went up 25 times each day & my shoulder raises went up by 10 each day.  4 day week here!

I’m far from perfect & I’ll be the first person to tell you that.  I’ve kept up with my exercise despite the fact that this quarantine has even affected me.  It’s all mental for me.  I hear & see others feeling bummed out & it tends to affect me in turn.  I haven’t been getting up at 7:30 am, I’ll wake up at that time & just drift in & out of sleep until 10:30 am.  I do exercise still, just that lately it’s been at 12:00 or shortly after.

As much as this period of time will likely bring everybodies mood down, remember that it will pass.  Things will more than likely be different after.  Different doesn’t have to mean worse.  It’ll be whatever we choose to make of it.

I much rather enjoy my eating & drinking regiment that I stick to 5 days a week.  On Easter weekend I aided the increase in alcohol sales, sales are up 40%-150% depending on where you live.  I didn’t enjoy it after more than 2 beverages.  Whatever is beside me, I just drink it.  That’s how I end up drinking more than a gallon of water most days!  1L bottle of water beside me that gets filled 3-6 times a day.

Pop is just too sweet, beer is something I like to try for the most part, usually a new flavour of craft beer.  I’ll have usually 3 cups of coffee a week, the darkest I can find & never any cream or sugar.  As for alcohol it’s rum on the rocks, gin & lime Bubbly, & VERY rarely a glass of white wine if it’s open at a family meal.

I was enjoying too much rum on the weekend.  TOO MUCH ALCOHOL IS NEVER A GOOD THING.  I actually wake up WAY too early after 3 drinks.  Most weekends I keep it to 0, 1, or 2 drinks when I don’t have anything to do the next day.  Oh well, the occassional dip in the pool happens once or twice a year.  I know why alcohol sales are up in Regina right now!  They deliver & lots of stuff is on sale.  Even I bought some beer to try!

Amid this Covid 19 stuff the President wants to open the US.  He wants to do that to get the economy going, I get that part.  What he’s not taking into consideration is the loss of more lives followed by a second wave of the virus.  All of his ideas will make our efforts so far pretty pointless.

I live in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, & you know how much I enjoy a concert!  Kim & I have tickets to a 4 band show in early July.  No talk of postponing or cancelling this show has been mentioned yet.  I’m already thinking about not going.  It’s still a wait & see situation, but the thought has crossed my mind.  If it was half the price & only the 2 bands I’d want to see/hear, I would not have thought about it yet.

Do I need expensive/nice looking guitars?  Nope!  I’m guessing my first 2 guitars were under $700 each,  my 7 string was likely just over $1400 with tax & I’m guessing the brand name Telecaster was more?  I learned most stuff on guitar when I got my first guitar in 2001.  I don’t need a PRS guitar to play better, I would like a nice guitar & I’ve selected PRS as the maker.  As I’ve been considering since I saw it online.  I’m saving for the aqua SE PRS (we can add the bonus of a satin back!!) & I’ve ordered the yellow/red burst S2 & I’m VERY excited!  The Canadian wide franchise music store is open for curb side pickups.  Stay home & stay safe, music’s a BIG thing for me, if you’re sick or dead you can’t make music.  I’m pretty sure I wont be picking up anything there in the next 6-8 months?

“It’s hard to belief this guitar is in the PRS SE line. The tonal variations I can create with this model beat out many guitars costing two or three times as much, and I’ve owned plenty over the years. Sweet mid-range and well balanced highs and lows. I’ve never seen advanced electronics like these in p/ups on guitars in this price range. The neck is incredibly comfortable. I can play all night without any hand or wrist fatigue. Somebody did their homework engineering this guitar from the mechanicals right through to the carve of the body and neck. Whether you’re a PRS player or not, and regardless of the style of music you play, this model is well worth your time and attention. Great value for the money.” – Customer review of ‘Paul’s Guitar SE model’ by PRS

Check this blog out if you haven’t yet.  https://guitarbrat.music.blog/

Most guitars weigh just over 7 pounds.  I was curious & weighed my electric guitars.  Apparently I’m used to a heavier guitar?  My 2 Les Paul guitars by different companies both came in at 9 pounds.  I played/play my green Les Paul a LOT!  My Explorer came in at just under 8 pounds.  My semi-hollow Telecaster came in just under 6 pounds, so I expect that whenever I get my ordered PRS it should be similar in weight & lighter is not a bad thing.  I’ve found myself grabbing the Telecaster quite often to hear something, since it’s so much lighter than the others.

As far as learning theory & all of the stuff related to guitar, I knew nothing about guitars when I started.  I learned how to tune a guitar, basic chords, what sounded good to my ears, & started playing live.  You’re going to need the basics & then you can go as far as you like.  I’ve recently learned more, in the past 6 months & I’ve easily quadrupled what I knew before I had cancer.  Do I necessarily apply what I know to everything I do on a guitar?  No.  I’ll use my still limited knowledge as a starting point & venture on with what sounds pleasing to me.

I don’t agree with this guy on everything.  In this case I do though.  When someone buys a sample for $30 on the internet & wins a Grammy Award with it, that’s flat out cheating eventhough music isn’t a competition.  That’s an entirely different conversation.  I know that a LOT of the music I listen to is Pro Tooled to perfection, look at the album “Wasting Light” by “Foo Fighters” though (I only know this because they made a documentary about it).  All of it recorded on tape without a computer in sight & it won best rock album!  Was it because of the recording method?  Probably not, but it made me feel a human connection.  That’s a connection that doesn’t happen for me as much as it used to.

YAY!!!!  One week until “What the Dead Men Say” is released from “Trivium”

The singer turned 34 years old in January.  This will be “Trivium’s” 9th major label studio album release.  He was 17 when their first album was released in 2003.

I fell asleep to “Blue Rodeo” the album “Greatest Hits”

I exercised to “Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers” the album “Greatest Hits”

Since you’re here you might as well subscribe.  Either ‘like’ & ‘follow’ the Facebook page or come here with your email open & ‘follow’ in the bottom right corner.  You’ll get an email or Facebook notification every Tuesday & Friday after I finish my morning exercises.  Don’t be afraid to tell others about this page & feel free to comment on any topic!

Yeah, I exercised a bit on Friday with my walking with my walker as always.  Small steps since my calves were incredibly sore.  Kim had Monday off, so I took Monday off too.

Look at all of those pretty guitars!  It’s his hobby & his job.  He went to school to be a guitar teacher.  I think I counted 10 high end PRS guitars on his wall, he earned them!  I ordered a medium level PRS & I’m saving & hoping to buy a low end PRS (the cheapest, $1300 PRS in Aqua)…I’m also on disability though & I’m nowhere near that capability on guitar.  He knows more than those who haven’t gone to school for guitar no doubt!

To be clear here I’ve got a few (5-10?) songs up to the proper tempo on guitar.  My left hand/arm are REALLY making things tougher this time around.  I guess it was almost 12 years with brain cancer to kick things off.  If I didn’t like it SO much, I’d likely pack it in.

I realized Friday night that I’ve been playing the opening riff to this song wrong since 2001??!!??  No wonder a random drunk guy came on stage at a 500 person cabaret to tell me “YOU GUYS SUCK!”  Here I thought he was just an angry drunk?????

No, it’s not the open G string mistake that everyone makes either.  HAHAHA, I said “…G string…”!

My mother’s guitar is what peaked my & my brother’s interest in guitar.  He took bass lessons & I went to the internet.  I took two years of piano when I was 6 & 7 years old, followed by flute & choir in high school.  I think my brother played saxophone for a bit, I could be wrong?  I was sent home for a summer in high school with a saxophone.  My band instructor wanted me to learn it & audition for one of the jazz bands the next year.  I was also often the first pick to do extra percussion in high school, I always figured it was because I was mediocre at best on the flute?  Now I mostly listen to metal & rock music, stuff that makes most people cringe, including Kim.  REALLY!!!!!  Why you gotta be that way Kimmy?  She’s smart, cute, & take’s me to school in a disagreement.

This album by “The Darkness” was released last year.  Was this some type of perverse foreshadowing?  Did they know something & didn’t openly tell us?

Well I guess Easter was only kind of cancelled this year.  No big family get together meal, at least that’s how our families spend it.  Kim’s parents were going to come to Regina for Easter this year.  That was cancelled when this virus stuff started.  Kim & I didn’t do anything special.  Thank goodness I didn’t have to partake in a turkey meal!!!!  Can we start celebrating things by ordering pizza?  We just had spaghetti & tomato sauce, nice change!

I was filling my pill cases on the weekend and I felt like Oprah…..

“YOU GET A PILL, YOU GET A PILL, YOU GET A PILL, YOU GET A PILL, EVERYBODY GETS A PILL!!!!!!!” even Kim enjoyed it!

Kim was doing our taxes this weekend.  I could have helped, working makes you do math…………..I don’t work.  0 – 0 = 0 & that’s probably one of the few reasons working is over rated!

I saw this trailer on the weekend…

I liked the first one, I thought it was pretty funny.  I haven’t seen this movie.  I know this is a kid’s movie & likely not meant to be taken too seriously.  Why is it that rock & metal music are being sold to kids as evil?  Does this mean all rock & metal fans are rude jerks?  There’s music I like & music I don’t like.  A TON of music genres have songs that fall into both categories.  We took our ‘niece’ to see the “My Little Pony” movie in the theater for her birthday a few years ago.

When the evil ponies showed up to battle they played ‘metal’ music, distorted guitar?  Why would anyone bother to influence young kids to avoid any type of music or art for that matter?  What is it with the stigma that rock & metal music are evil?  I hope that’s not the intent, & I don’t think it is, however it does seem odd.  Maybe I’m reading too much into it?

Please keep up with the personal distancing?  Just because the curve is flattening doesn’t mean its SUPER PARTY FUN TIME.  It means what we’re doing is helping, keep helping in the effort to eliminate the curve.  There won’t be an announcement “OK, everything’s back to normal carry on as you were”.  When this is over (July?) it will be a gradual release of prioritized workers for more essential businesses & once everyone is out in the public, it will be different.  Please make sure you do your part so we can try to avoid another quarantine.  Too many people out at once isn’t a good thing.  I’m not a figure of authority in any way but I think it’s better to be safe than sorry!

I saw this yesterday & WOW he’s a GREAT/SMART guy.  I wish he’d be a world leader.  I can think of a few that could learn from him, if they ever stopped to listen!

I’ve gotta say I’m a VERY lucky guy!  I’ve got an AMAZING wife that loves me & supports me, of course goes both ways.  Brewster (our dog) is still alive & kicking after 14 years, & I’m lucky enough to be able to work on myself physically & mentally while relearning my favourite hobby!  Things could be much, much worse.

Do you have a question about stage 4 brain cancer?  Ask if you do!

350 Curls w/ 20 pound dumb bells

200 Shoulder raises/Chest presses w/ 10 pound dumb bells

400 Crunches

400 Leg lifts

200 Squats while balancing on my toes.

200 Back flexes

2 days of yoga

4 short planks

Walking distance – 420 meters = 1377.95 feet

There won’t be any stairs during this virus stuff.  I don’t really want to touch a public railing or clean them before & after I’m done.

I fell asleep to “Queens of the Stone Age” the album “Villains”

I exercised to “TOOL” the album “Lateralus”

I made the font size larger & now the spellcheck doesn’t work?  Sorry in advance.

It’s Tuesday evening as I write this.  Before I posted Tuesday’s blog, I slept in, & didn’t excersise until after I posted the blog.  I exercised to “Chromeo” on Monday & “Foo Fighters” afterwards on Tuesday.

I played my “Fender” Telecaster Tuesday evening & quickly learned the rhythm to this…

…none of the fast licks but the main riff & verse/chorus.  I opted on Tuesday to learn different bands/sounds on each guitar instead of just going from 1 album by 1 band.  Different stuff to learn with each different artist/band.  I found a set list of cover songs from my first band in University.  I’ll go through that to start.  Not all of our songs are on there, I’ll add to it as I go, I think we ended up doing about 40 cover songs & wrote 7 of our own?

I guess I’ll call this a ‘retraction’?  I said that P90 pickups were double coil pickups, they aren’t.  They’re slightly larger, louder single coil pickups.  You typically see single coil pickups on Fender Stratocasters.  Gibson created the P90 pickup to be louder, have a different sound & look since they were on Gibson’s first solid body guitar a 1950 Gibson Gold Top Les Paul.  Double coil pickups were made later on.  They were created to remain at the same volume level as the P90 but included the second coil to add the volume & reduce the hum, that’s why they’re now commonly called “Humbuckers”.  Here’s a Gibson Les Paul 1950 Gold Top with P90 pickups…

Les Paul Standard 50s w/P90 Pickups - Gold Top

Best PRS SE on the market, aqua it is, I’m saving up!  If Kim decides on a trip, the money goes there.  The SE model was introduced to the SE line in 2019 & modeled after Paul Reed Smith’s Core guitar, it’s not going anywhere.  If I could afford a $5000 + tax guitar I’d get the Core model in Violet Blue Burst.  That would take me a decade or more to save for & Kim might kill me if I tried to!!!????

https://www.long-mcquade.com/124878/Guitars/Electric-Guitars/Paul-Reed-Smith/SE-Paul-s-Guitar—Aqua.htm

1 acoustic & 6 electrics are enough for me.  A PRS S2 on the way & an SE in the future & I’ll keep rockin’ n’ ROLLIN’ until I can’t anymore!  Your seeing these guitars a fraction of the amount of times I’ve looked at them!

S2 Custom 22 Semi-Hollow Body Guitar w/Gig Bag - McCarty Sunburst

I don’t necessarily switch guitars constantly.  The feel, shape, & sound of a guitar tends to dictate what comes next.  Example; my no-name brand green Les Paul aka “Kermit” feels & sounds great for most modern rock & a lot of grunge.  My Fender Telecaster aka “Ian” sounds best with blues, country, or most pre-1980 rock music.

Nope, I don’t need or want these guitars!  I’ve got my 7 string “Kiichichaos”, no-name Les Paul “Kermit”, Epiphone Explorer “Grohl”, semi-hollow Fender Telecaster “Ian”, an ordered semi-hollow PRS S2, & one day a PRS SE “Paul’s Guitar”.

All of these above are guitars I either don’t like the look or sound of, that’s why I’d say they’re not for me.  I find a floyd rose bridge to be more of a hassle/extra work on a guitar.  I’ve played 2 in my life & broke a string both times within 2 minutes.

Any & all youtubers I’ve been watching have helped me TREMENDOUSLY in relearning guitar after almost a 12 year hiatus!

If you like checking out guitars as much as I do, I recommend checking this blog out.  https://guitarbrat.music.blog/

Good things don’t change over night usually.  As with my exercise & guitar playing.  Practice, repetition & persistence are essential for the desired outcome.  Best thing for most people to remember ‘There’s always someone doing better’.  That’s what keeps me going!

I went walking this morning in our parkade.  WOW were my calves sore just standing up.  I guess the change in how I do my squats was a good thing?

When I find that somethings not working the way I had hoped, I take a different approach to it after multiple attempts.  I try to learn from my failures.  That doesn’t necessarily mean everything was terrible.  Take the positives with you & throw out the negatives, then adjust accordingly.

Example; My leg exercises aren’t helping my calves.  My thighs are doing well though.  I changed the way I do my squats this week to benefit both areas.  Only time will tell if I get the desired results?  I won’t know tomorrow, probably by the end of the month or a couple of weeks after that?

There’s no short cut that I know of for what I’m trying to do.  There are no instructions on how to overcome the effects of brain cancer.  I’ve got to continue to get better at what I’m doing.  I can’t just throw my hands in the air, walk away, & say “Ah, good enough!”  I literally can’t “walk” away…I should have said “roll”.

Since everyone is stuck at home, you might as well use this time to do all of those little things around your house that you never have time to do.  Don’t do them all at once though!  Spread them out, who knows how much free time you’ll have?  If you’ve already done most of the stuff around your house, was there anything else on your list to accomplish?  Don’t most people want to lose weight and get healthier?  Now’s the time!  What else do you have to do?

Call, text, Facebook, Tweet, Instagram, Skype, video chat, or email someone to participate with you.  That will make you accountable for meeting your goal that day!  Contact them before & after, have fun with it!

I know I yap about guitars a LOT, but there’s a reason for that.  I’m home with Brewster 9-10 hours a day.  I eat, exercise, shower, watch very little TV, & play guitar.  Until this past September I didn’t have much to look forward to the next day after I finished my exercises.  Now I have this hobby I LOVED doing back in my life for the first time since the beginning of February 2008.

I was watching this on “The Ellen Degeneres Show” the other day & did it Thursday (4 takes since I kept messing up the words) before I did my weight exercises.  I challenge Mitch Fraser, Cameron Rorquist, Sukhdeep Sandhu.  I’m only supposed to tag 3 people, but if you’re reading this, I challenge you.  If a 40 year old physically handicapped guy can do it, so can you!  I tried to sing a few different songs but messed up the lyrics the video is my 4th attempt.

My video is on the Facebook page.

The new album from thrash metal group “Testament” is GREAT!  “Titans of Creation”

I fell asleep to “Barenaked Ladies” the album “Gordon”

I exercised to “Chromeo” the album “Head Over Heels”

I REALLY need to stop watching/reading videos & reviews on this SE model PRS!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHrn3qpout8 “A breakthrough in pickup design”

“…huge P 90 sound…” BONUS right there!  These pickups don’t have the LOUD annoying hum that vintage P90 pickups are known for.

P90 double coil pickups for guitars were developed by Gibson in 1946.  They’re known for having a LOUD hum.  After that multiple double coil pickups were created without the hum and are now called _______ Humbuckers

The TCI pickups are only available in the guitars above.  I’m a casual fan of John Mayer’s music although he is a great guitarist “Born & Raised” is a GREAT album.  If he & Paul Reed Smith were involved in creating these pickups, I’m all in!

Yeah, I’m streaming music now & cutting back on whatever I can to get this SE aqua PRS.  I’ve researched & this is the best bang for my cash, & it has the different bells & whistles I’m looking for.  Hopefully within 2 or 3 years I’ll be able to get one, if they’re still making them?  Kim’s undecided if she wants to go on a trip.  If she decides she wants to, at least I’ll have some cash to help out.  Sure the TCI “S” pickups in the SE model don’t sound exactly the same as the TCI pickups in the Core model, but a Core model is WAY over any amount I could think of for a guitar.  Like a minimum of $4900 + tax!!!!!!!??????

SE Paul's Guitar - Aqua

I continue to look at other guitars, but nothing measures up to this one!  I’ve looked at Washburn, Gibson, Epiphone, Fender, Squier, Jackson, ESP, LTD, Yamaha, Music Man, Guild, Gretsch, Dean, Indio, Godin, Warmoth, Peavy, Ibanez, B.C. Rich, Chapman, Kiesel, Charvel, Tokai, Sahana, companies I’ve never heard of from places I’ve never heard of, & after all of that searching & researching I’m sticking with PRS.  The others aren’t bad by any means but I can’t play more than 6 electric guitars, so it might as well be the right one.  PRS, while expensive, have won me over as a company that pays close attention to detail.

Despite all of this talk about a future guitar purchase, I am SUPER PUMPED about the guitar I ordered in January with 85/15 “S” pickups.  PRS reproduced a pickup built in 1985 exactly & mass produced for certain guitars in 2015 hence 85/15 “S”.  The “S” just means they’re made in the oversea factory, which I believe is in Indonesia now.

Want to know why certain types of wood are chosen for certain parts of a guitar build?  Pull this video to the 8:40 minute mark and let Mr. Paul Reed Smith take you to school with a wooden xylophone!

Maple and mahogany are likely the most expensive woods used.  The SE line has a paper thin amount of maple, S2 line has ¼ inch, & the uber expensive Core line has ½ inch of maple on the top of the body.  The maple is baked in an oven @ 350F to remove any fluid from the wood, it is then glued to the body made of mahogany, then cut to the shape.

https://www.long-mcquade.com/124878/Guitars/Electric-Guitars/Paul-Reed-Smith/SE-Paul-s-Guitar—Aqua.htm

I just had a FANTASTIC idea!  The “Paul’s Guitar” SE costs $1300 + tax in Canada.  If all of you BEAUTIFUL & WONDERFUL people send me $5 I’ll be well on my way to getting this guitar!  I’m so SMRT!  Subscribers & casual readers feel free to pitch in!  My website tells me I have 207 subscribers, I’m quite positive the subscriber amount is far less (180?), so send in the cash!   I can’t even type it with a straight face!  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!  Keep your money!

Sunday evening I realized I need to kick this guitar stuff up a notch!  The first time I learned was because of “Foo Fighters”-“The Colour & the Shape” album.  I learned about 10/13 songs.  I’ve already got 2 ½ down, might as well learn the rest of the album & a few other songs.  I just need to focus on smaller portions of a song & put them together.  Intro, verse, chorus, bridge, solo, & the outro.  Learn each part & put it together.  Finish one or two songs, play them through each session & learn another.  Foo Fighters are great for learning rhythm & more!  Here I come!  This likely won’t happen as fast as I’d like it to, but it’s the most familiar stuff to me.  It’s not a matter of knowing what I’m doing, it’s more strengthening the muscles I need to do it.  The more I learn, the easier the next song becomes to learn.

I could be bitter & angry that I can’t do something I love as well as I used to be able to.  Being that upset & angry would get me nowhere.  I know that if I work at it, it’ll eventually come to me.  How do I know?  I said I was going to learn this song…

…as of Saturday I have the main riff & verse down.  It took me longer than I thought but I made it happen & it was completely new to me.  You’ve got more time than you’ll ever have (unless you have young kids), you can be angry that you’re stuck inside or use your time to focus on something positive & productive.  Whatever you end up doing, the choice is up to YOU.

In order to make some type of segue to the following Covid-19 stuff.  We’re all being told repeatedly to stay indoors, stay 6 or more feet away from others, & wash our hands.  You know what gets my hand muscles loose & ready to play guitar?  Washing my hands with warm soapy water!

Other than that, let’s get real for a bit.  Covid-19 is EVERYWHERE!  I very rarely listen to the radio.  I turned it on while sitting in the vehicle waiting for Kim & there was nothing but Covid-19 news.  I’m really tired of being told to stay inside, but I understand the need to get that out into the world.  There are likely numerous people who disobey the rules.  We could all sit around & call them names or hope they realize that they’re not just putting themselves at risk, but so many others as well.

I know it’s odd for most people to go with very little human contact & it can really bum a person out.  Almost everyone has a cell phone, a tablet, internet, face time, skype, zoom, etc.  If you’ve got it, you wanted it, now use it.  I thought nobody wanted to talk to anybody anymore “I’ll text you”.  Good luck, I don’t have a lot of that stuff, I don’t want it.  I call people or email them to see how they’re doing.  A lot of people have all of these ways to contact and interact with others but everyone’s depressed without human contact.  Might as well use what you have.

Remember that despite the efforts of others, your mood & attitude all boil down to what YOU make of the situation you’re in.  This is your time to decide if you can make it better for you & those around you or bring everyone around you down.  A friend, companion, spouse, therapist, etc. they can give you the tools to achieve what you want.  In the end YOU have to put those tools to use & make a difference to yourself.

Donald Trump estimates 100,000 – 240,000 deaths in America.  No one wants to see that or anywhere near that amount of deaths.  To avoid this & save lives is EXACTLY why everyone should listen to the health officials.

TO BE CLEAR I AM NOT A HEALTH OFFICIAL!  LISTEN TO THE ACTUAL PROFESSIONALS!

I mentioned that “I don’t want a guitar slapped together in a panic”.  More importantly I meant to say that I don’t want to see the death toll rise for any reason or excuse.  I can wait for a guitar, life is FAR more important!  My guitar was ordered on January 15th, it’ll get hear eventually.

Everybody wants instant gratification, I’m just as guilty of that as anyone.  My guitar was supposed to be here this month, as of March 2nd it was delayed until August.  I’m positive that with this virus stuff it’ll be delayed even more.  I’d like it to be here already, I’ll likely appreciate it more when it gets here because I’ve had to wait that much longer.  I know they have my order & waiting won’t hurt me.

Kim went to get groceries on the weekend.  I can’t tell you what life is like out there?  As the day progressed Kim’s mood went down.  She’s the cheerful optimistic one in this relationship.  It really started to bother her and I could understand why as she told me about the protocol at the grocery store.  All I could do was hold her.  Probably didn’t help that we finished “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+.  Great show, sad ending.

Kim, Brewster & I went for a drive on Sunday evening to roll down the windows & get some fresh air, made a HUGE difference.

KEEP YOUR CHIN UP!!!!  IT’LL GET WORSE BEFORE IT GETS BETTER.

I’ve got a handful of album releases I’m waiting for this year.  There are 2 that have release dates.  “Trivium” – “What the Dead Men Say” on April 24th & “Lamb of God” – “Lamb of God” on May 8th!  My sister-in-law’s birthday, followed by our 15th Anniversary, & then a Friday with some new “Lamb of God”

More album release dates to come that I’m waiting for anxiously!

“Testament” released a new album on Friday, I need to give it a good listen still.  I’ve listened to it sporadically over the weekend and really like it (Thrash Metal).  I don’t post reaction thoughts though, I still need to digest this one a bit!

2 days of yoga

There won’t be any stairs during this virus stuff.  I don’t really want to touch a public railing or clean them before & after I’m done.  As for walking, no excuse or reason, I’m just lazy.

I fell asleep to “Matthew Good Band” the album “Beautiful Midnight”

I exercised to “Foo Fighters” the album “There is Nothing Left to Lose”

I don’t think “chicks dig it” but I’ve never tried.

I don’t know what exactly I did Thursday, near the end of my weights I tweaked something in my back?  It wasn’t an “OH #$%^&^% THAT HURT!” it was more of an “Ah, what was that?”  It got a little tighter as the day went on & disappeared pretty quick as I rested my back.  I could tell something wasn’t right as soon as I started stretching.  Every stretch was very tight & painful I haven’t been that tight in a while.

Think about what I do?  I get up eat breakfast then exercise.  I have a snack then shower.  I check my email then have lunch.  I tidy up the few things around the place that need to be put away.  I check my email then play guitar.  Kim comes home, tired from work.  We have supper then watch TV, make a puzzle, play a game, or she’ll catch up on TV I don’t watch while I practice guitar.  After that we go to bed.  That’s my routine 5 days a week.  You’ll notice that I never mentioned getting into a vehicle or going anywhere.

Weekends I sleep in until 10:30 – 11:00 am.  I have coffee & breakfast, then hangout with Kim who’s likely got some laundry on the go.  I shower, hang out with Kim or practice guitar.  We have supper & probably don’t go out.  Either day of the weekend I spend most of my time in the kitchen.  I hard-boil eggs for the week, make a pitcher of vegetable juice for the week, & I bake fish for the week.  Kim usually heads out for groceries on the weekend.  That’s a regular week for us.

Throughout all of that I never mentioned leaving our condo.  We live on the top floor of an apartment style condo.  Dogs are not allowed to do their business on the balcony.  Brewster has training pads at the balcony door.  I’m in a wheelchair.  The bottom of the balcony doorway is too tall for me to get out in my wheelchair.  If I need to get out in an emergency, I have to crawl.  Our windows & balcony face the South.  In the spring, summer, & fall it’s often too hot to spend more than 5 minutes on the balcony.  It’s even too hot for Brewster’s paws unless there’s a STRONG wind, then nobody wants to be outside.

I wear shorts at least 360 days a year.  We have “underground” parking = me not outside.  When we get to someone’s house it’s either nice enough to sit in their backyard or we go straight into the house.

Tally that up.  How much time am I outside on a regular week?

I get it, most people are used to having a driver’s license, going to a store, picking up their kids at school, hanging out in their backyard, etc.  Trust me, this quarantine will likely start to feel normal the longer it goes on.  Remember, you’re allowed to go to your backyard or walk around your neighborhood & get some fresh air.

I’ll admit that it took me about a year to get used to being inside most of the time.  We moved into our condo on December 18th, 2013.  So since I got cancer on February 5th 2008, I’ve spent most of my time in either a hospital room or condo.

I choose not to have a mobile device, skype, facetime, zoom, etc.  That has never interested me.  I don’t consider that as a type of human contact.  Obviously that’s just me though & that’s fine by me.

It will get better.

In other news the house is officially off the market, & I’m relieved/closer to being stress free.  No more trying to make the place look perfect for a complete stranger, YAY!  Would have been nice to get the place we wanted in September or October, but everything happens for a reason I guess.

I refuse to settle on a new house.  I expect some renovations due to my wheelchair of course.  Kim wants an attached garage.  I’d like a finished basement (I can’t do any of the work really).  We’d both like a 3rd bedroom on the main floor of a bungalow to use as an office/man cave.  You’d think something like that would be available in Regina?  NOPE!  Hopefully next year or 2022?

Look at that, no guitar talk!  Just looking at my ordered PRS S2 & waiting for a delivery in what could be November or December now?

S2 Custom 22 Semi-Hollow Body Guitar w/Gig Bag - McCarty Sunburst

I’m streaming most of my music this year in order to save some money.  I plan on ordering a handful of CDs coming out this year, but mostly streaming overall.  The “Petals for Armor” EP from Haley Williams is REALLY good as is Pearl Jam’s “Gigaton”.  Pearl Jam has always been a little hit & miss for me, although I do own most of their studio albums & a few live albums of theirs.
