Yep, back to exercises this week.  I actually lowered 3 totals to make sure I’m getting everything proper & the results I would like.

I had a temporary Physiotherapist, an older lady who was very nice.  She asked me if I was a body builder, I just laughed & replied “Hahahahaha, far from!”

 

2 things & walking isn’t one of them.  I do miss playing baseball but I quit after the season in 1997.  My arm was ready to fall off, playing 3rd base on 2 teams.  I got a call one night to play with the A level team, I was on the B level team.  I declined since I was a useless hitter & I had a team practice that night.  Company soft ball was fun though.

I don’t miss playing guitar & singing, sort of.  I don’t miss the 2:00 am nights on the weekends when I load up my car full with my amplifier & guitars, & then return home & unload it all in the wee hours of the morning.  If I was famous enough to have a roadie do the heavy lifting, I might feel differently about that.

I do miss sitting at home, singing & playing my acoustic guitar just for fun.  Kim even mentioned once that she missed me doing that around the house.

I know my Grandfather, on my mother’s side of the family, couldn’t understand why my brother & I were playing this type of music or what we got from making our music.  We didn’t play metal, but we listened to some of it.  I can’t do any type of metal scream, before cancer or now.  I never had a “desire” to do so.  There were so many other people that trained to do those type of vocals.  We played heavy rock music, but listened to more metal stuff.

 

Affleck is out as Batman/Bruce Wayne.  Now the rumours start.

Ideally I’d love to see Christian Bale reprise the role!  John Hamm would be a graceful transition from Ben Affleck.

No, I didn’t watch The Oscars.  I own “Black Panther” & “Bohemian Rhapsody” I just want to see “Blackkklans Man”.  “Green Book” won for best movie.  Never paid any attention to it.  People will say to me “Oh, you need to see it!”  What, will I die if I don’t see it?  That’s the only time I ‘need’ to see any movie.

This was funny in the 1990s when David Letterman caught wind of the gas station owner, Dick Assman, in Regina.  Now SGI won’t approve a novelty license plate that says ASSMAN on it?  Did everybody lose their sense of humour?  Would this be allowed in the USA?  The current President says things that are questionable at best.

 

TOOL (NEW ALBUM THIS SUMMER, MAYBE?)

4 guys based in L.A.  The drummer, Danny Carey, is a part of the Mensa organization.  Guitarist, Adam Jones, worked as a special effects worker for film & TV, he now does Tool’s album art & videos.  All I know about the bassist, Justin Chancellor, is that he is their 2nd bassist & I believe he’s English.  Singer, Maynard James Keenan, owns 3 or 4 dojos, has a black belt in a martial art, owns & operates a vineyard in Arizona, & sings for Tool, A Perfect Circle, & Puscifer.

They seem to enjoy teasing fans with false information about any release they may have coming.  They aren’t metal, rock or anything else.  I’d just call them a progressive music act.  The rhythms are tribal almost, REALLY good

Tool is not a band that you’d just tap your foot to.  Very minimal 4/4 time rhythm.  Maynard doesn’t scream, he will shout on key, & he is a very good singer, not showy but does what is needed for the song.  He prefers to think of his voice as another instrument in the band.

In their live concert set up, the drums & Maynard are in the back while the guitarist & bassist are near the front but on the sides of the stage.  The majority of their songs titles & lyrics are meant to be double – entendre.  Such as songs called “Prison Sex”, “Stinkfist”, “Aenima”, etc.  This is meant to provoke the listeners mind.

They’re quite private & very smart in not telling their fan base when an album will be released or anything more than fans need to know at the moment.  Their catalogue started with an EP & carries on from there….

Music throughout the weekend.  “Dream Theater”, “Queen”, “Alter Bridge”, & “Lamb of God”

 

I forgot to mention this.  This past Thursday Regina won the bid for hosting The Grey Cup in 2020.  Tickets are expensive & it will be cold.  The home town Saskatchewan Roughriders had better make it to Canada’s Super Bowl!

We finally watched the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody”.  FANTASTIC movie, well done without much invasion into Freddie Mercury’s private life.  I do wish they showed the writing & recording of “Under Pressure” with “David Bowie” though.

Saturday was pretty quiet her.  Kim was working on her photo assignment.  I was clearing off the DVR.  Made it to Netflix in the evening & started watching “Murder Mountain”.  I watched 4/6 episodes & I’m still not sure if it’s a documentary about marijuana or the hundreds of people that go missing every year in some type of “Bermuda Triangle” in Humboldt County, California.  I will say it’s very interesting though!

 

DREAM THEATER RELEASE ON FRIDAY.  I’ll point out my highlights at a later date.

This is the first Dream Theater album without a song at 10:00 minutes or more!  I would listen to my iPod at work.  Dream Theater’s album “Systematic Chaos” & Lynyrd Skynyrd’s double album of “Greatest Hits” & that would take up 5 hours of my day.  One earbud in my ear & the other down my shirt so it wouldn’t get caught in the press.  Then maybe a sports Podcast or the mind numbing sound of the press’ through my protective noise cancelling ear muffs.

Juice is made, eggs to hard boil, & likely watch the biggest talent show for the movie industry.

 

HIGHLY SUSPECT

I believe it’s 3 guys based in New York.  They have 2 albums out.  The 2nd album was a sophomore slump if you ask me.  The singer also must find it tough to write any lyrics without using profanity.  Over the course of 20 songs spread over 2 albums there are 4 songs without profanity.  I’ll give you 5 songs in total, 3 from their first album & 2 from their 2nd album.  They’re supposed to be releasing a new album this year at some point.  I’ll have to hear it before I buy it, if I buy it?  I really like the first album though!

No exercises this week.  I’m too tired.  If I had done them this week the quality of them would be terrible.  Quality over quantity.

I fell asleep to “Foo Fighters” the album “The Colour & The Shape”

 

I’m hesitant to do a metal band review.  I don’t want to turn dedicated readers away.  Let me know of I should?  If you’d prefer I don’t, this blog will likely end around June or July of this year.     

 

After such a long time, well 7 years this July, every day is starting to feel like Groundhog Day.  Exercise for 75 – 90 minutes every day, eat relatively healthy, & wait patiently for the weekend to fly by, & repeat.  It feels very redundant, long time to get to this point, yet it feels as though I’m wired to stick to 1 thing & it’s getting boring.  Sure, I change up the order of my exercises, still kind of ho hum though.  I’m exhausted after my exercises & then find it difficult to get the motivation to hit the shower.

I just couldn’t do what I should have been doing this week.  It might feel cold outside but it has been sunny & that makes our place too hot for me +24C or more in here (75.2F).  I can’t turn on the A/C yet, so I’ll likely suffer in this heat doing my exercises the next few weeks.

At least Kim has today off with me.

 

I had “Dream Theater” preordered & got the full release last night.  10 songs averaging 6:30 minutes.  Progressive metal at it’s nerdiest.

I’m pretty sure this year will have numerous metal release, (Mark Morton (Lamb of God guitarist), In Flames, Lamb of God, Chevelle, Anthrax, Megadeth…) releases that I’m interested in as well as a new release from “Big Wreck”, & “Tool”.  Big Wreck is releasing a single.  Late last night I saw a new song on www.youtube.com

It’s a standalone single, I’m go to hold off until it’s a preorder single for the new album.

I think Facebook needed a break like I did this week?  To say that Facebook has been quiet this week would be an understatement.

However televised baseball spring training games start on Monday.  WOO HOO!

A few movies I’d like to see & possibly purchase this year?

There are others movies I’d like to see this year but that’s enough for now.  As for Motley Crue, I loved the book, but was never a fan of their “Hair Metal” music, or “Hair Metal” in general.

How many times have I heard this?  Well I didn’t get into them until after their 2nd album was released for a few months, I’ve heard this after multiple albums though!

 

THE BIRDS OF SATAN

This is 1 of 4 side projects by Taylor Hawkins, drummer for Foo Fighters.  The other 3 are separate projects 2 of which I’ll discuss later.  The 3rd is a cover band called “Chevy Metal”.  He’s the drummer & singer for each band.  He easily has a higher vocal range than Dave Grohl.  When Foo Fighters perform “The Pretender”, Taylor takes the high lead vocals in the chorus & Dave takes the lower harmony, I’m guessing this is to save Dave’s voice a bit.  As for who is the better drummer, that would be a hard pick.  Dave stole him from Alanis Morissette while she exploded to fame, touring her album “Jagged Little Pill”, which worked out well for Foo Fighters & especially Taylor.

 

This is only a 7 song EP & it’s the only release from The Birds of Satan.

SHORT WEEK, I’LL CATCH YOU ON FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Music throughout the weekend.  “I Mother Earth”, “Led Zeppelin”, “Black Sabbath”, “Megadeth”, “Testament”, “Trivium”, & “Metallica”.

 

My aunt & uncle were here from Alberta over the weekend, we went to my parents place to see them on Saturday.  Rachel was somewhat under the weather.  My brother was there with their new puppy Frankie.  Right now she’s smaller than my parents’ dog, who is just over 5lbs.  Once she’s full grown it will be Goose at 5lbs, Frankie at 9lbs, & our old man at 12lbs.  He just turned 13 on January 31st.  Frankie’s tough though sharp puppy teeth.  It was more of a “HI FRANKIE!……………………Oh, hi Mitch.  Now we have 2 “nieces”.  One is named Hannah, a human, the other is Frankie, a dog, Brewster’s cousin.

Sunday was a wake up at 5:00 am day?  Why, I don’t know?  We had groceries delivered just shortly after 8:00 am.  Helped Kim put them away, boiled some eggs, made my vegetable juice for a 4 day week, just some laundry to put away, & our human “niece” was here for a sleep over.

After an exhausting Sunday, I was all out of gas, & then came the couch.  I slept well last night, 5:00 am wake up, no nap, 2 cups of coffee, +25C in our suite, & a very energetic girl.  I did sleep more last night, but I still needed a coffee, 3rd one of the month I believe.

Cleaned up the sticker books, paints, & a few Legos, along with all of the dishes before I went to bed on the couch.  Kim & Hannah were in the bedroom & asleep by 9:30 pm.  I think I hit the couch around 11:00 pm.

Today we get to visit with a friend of mine & Kim has to take some photos for her photography class.

 

So that’s 4 tours in the last 2 weeks that will be anywhere but Saskatchewan.  Playing one night in Toronto does not make it a world tour, I’m looking at you “Muse”!  They didn’t even release the one day showing in Saskatchewan theaters of their previous world tour.

That’s one of the reasons I purchase music from iTunes instead of streaming it.  That & my iPod Classic works fine, if I went to streaming, I’d have to get an iPod touch or an iPhone, so I’ll stick with iTunes for now.  Kim has Apple Music that I can use to hear a full album on before I purchase it.  I want to give musicians some cash for doing their job, & I tend to buy a T-Shirt at a show also.  In Saskatchewan I’ll likely see 1/10 of the bands I listen to.

Oh, the declining Apple products…  This is pretty much common knowledge, among my inner circle, & sad.  Ever wonder if Apple had it right & just need to fix the stuff that is now trash.  I’m an iTunes user & the changes to iTunes have really got me thinking about jumping ship.

A TON of cell phone users in Ontario & other parts of Eastern Canada complaining on Friday about an Amber Alert on their cell phone.  They wanted a cell phone, so deal with all of the stuff that comes with it.

DIXIE CHICKS

I’m using the 4 CDs Kim has.  I don’t listen to them much, but I do like them.  There’s probably some twang in there but it doesn’t bother me at all.  They’ve got an acoustic guitar, banjo, & fiddle along with many other instruments when needed.  They came to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan after I was out of my therapy.  Kim went with a friend & I should have gone too, bad call on my part!

5 days of exercise total; 400 pushups, 600 leg lifts, 300 crunches, 300 tricep lifts, 450 squats, 300 back flexes

YOU WONT HEAR FROM ME UNTIL MONDAY OR TUESDAY.  FAMILY DAY ON MONDAY A VACATION DAY.

One thing that I’d like to explain clearly.  There was body shaming going around Kelly Clarkson.  I said that “I’ll never see her so it doesn’t matter” what I meant was, I’ll never see her live & if she’s happy & feels healthy, who cares.  Weight or no weight she still sounds the same.

I did get a little more information from my mother about the day I passed out at work & was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer.

Mom was home sick with the flu, Kim, dad, & Mitch were all at work.  It was morning of Tuesday, February 5th.  Time of day is questionable.  I was taken to the Pasqua hospital, Kim came into the back of the Ambulance with me.  They took me to the wrong hospital, I was then taken to the General hospital.  My parents, brother, Sherry & James were all there before us.  I guess my mom was a wreck.  She kept asking if I was there yet.  They kept telling her that I wasn’t.  She then mentioned that her son mass bleeding in his brain.  They told her I was on the way there.

Once I was at the right hospital the surgeon was tied up finishing a lengthy surgery.  I had to wait a bit to have 2 of my 3 brain surgeries.  My brother had to restrain my mother so the doctors could do their job.  He had to tell her that while pulling her back.   I blacked out in the Ambulance before it left the parking lot at work.  So this part of it I don’t remember at all.

I was unconscious for a week in an induced coma & 3 weeks in an un-induced coma.  I was in the ICU that entire time.

My mother wanted to stay once I was in the ICU, she wanted to have someone familiar for me to wake up to.  One of the nurses finally told her to just go home, since I wasn’t going to wake up that day.

The next day, I assume, I had my 3rd brain surgery.  Every night until I woke up, someone was sitting with me in case I woke up after being told I had a 5-15% chance of waking up at all.  Mom, dad, Mitch, & Kim I believe all took turns sitting with me in case I woke up.

I did wake up in the ICU.  I think Kim was just outside of the ICU?  I vaguely remember waking up.  There were a handful of empty beds in the ICU & the nurse brought whoever was there in to see me & knew I wanted to get out of that room.  I was moved to the Pasqua Hospital for recovery & low intensive physiotherapy.  I stayed there for a little more than a year.  Celebrated my 29th birthday in January of 2009 in the auditorium there, with roughly 75 friends & family.  Mom made a TON of chili for everyone, Grandma made 2 big cakes vanilla & chocolate, & a cooler full of pop.  I haven’t walked on my own since the morning of Tuesday, February 5th, 2008.  Ah well, at least I can work on it! This story might never have been told, by me at least.  I don’t remember it well as I get further away from that date.  “In the end it doesn’t even matter.”  I’m here but I don’t remember much of 2008, I was asleep for most of that year.  “You gotta sink before you swim” I guess?

All of this talk of surviving cancer tells me I’m not done here yet!  There’s something else I need to do.

 

Yep, I planned Valentine’s Day supper for Kim.  A Reservation at her favourite restaurant, & my parents could take Brewster for the evening.  Brewster has serious anxiety issues & can’t be left alone.

On Wednesday she came home from work & decided she’d rather stay in.  Easier to hear me, I have a fairly quiet voice.  Kim came home with Dairy Queen for supper & some DQ ice cream for both of us. We just watched TV & cuddled on the couch.  So, another quiet evening at home.

She also bought me some beer, she knows me all too well!  I don’t drink during the week though.  I’ll try some of the craft beer from “Rebellion Brewing Co.” later on today!

I think most of Saskatchewan has heard of the one album I have.  4 guys from Saskatoon did very well for themselves & have around 11 albums in the iTunes store.  My parents had this album, & I’ve had it for a little while too.  I bought mine on iTunes though.  If you live in Saskatchewan you have at least heard a tune or 2 from this album…

I fell asleep to “Janelle Monae” the album “Dirty Computer”, followed by “Testament” the album “The Legacy”

I exercised in silence.  I forgot to put the universal remote on the charger last night.

 

I will openly admit that even when I was free of cancer & my rehabilitation, I was an asshole.  I was VERY depressed & wouldn’t listen to anyone.  That wasn’t me, never has been or will be.  I am truly sorry to those I was a moron to, publically & privately.  Thank you for forgiving me.  You chose to forgive me, I didn’t force it on anyone.  THANK YOU!!!!!  It may have been years ago, but I still feel bad about it.

I got over that.  Getting into & out of a wheelchair is pretty normal now, not something I’ve stressed about in quite a while.  My legs work a bit & the exercise definitely helps with my walking.  I can stand for quite a while, as long as I have something to hold on to, or with the aid of another person.  30 minutes of standing in one spot isn’t out of the question.

I’m more able to keep my walker (on wheels, chest high) pointed in a straight direction.  Kim follows me in case I stumble or need to sit.  It’s really not that bad, especially since I’m getting stronger.

144 meters is my longest walk without a rest.  It used to be 200, rest, 400, rest, then 200 more, years ago.  I should not have stopped doing that, 800 meters twice a week when I was released from my rehabilitation.  I used to enjoy walking with my walker but something changed after doing so a few times?

Just being alive & able to work on myself sure beats the alternative.  I do have anxiety issues in large groups, talking on the phone to a stranger, or just meeting new people.  Anxiety is likely my biggest issue at the moment.  I tend to clam up in a group of roughly 10 or more people, even if I know them.

 

Oh, the Grammy Awards.  There is no reason to make any art a competition, but alas “….here we go again….”

A bitter sweet win for the deceased Soundgarden singer, Chris Cornell.  Other awards are listed as well.  “Greta Van Fleet” won best rock album for their 1st release of 2, 4 song EPs, sold as an 8 song album.  The really good album, not the one that’s just OK.

I watched about 10 minutes of CNN on Monday.  They were talking about how great it was to have so many women winning awards, Alicia Keys hosting, & other women involved with the show.  That’s great & Alicia Keys hosting the show was FANTASTIC!  I’ve always thought she’s AWESOME!  As for being nominated, I don’t care what sex, race, or religion you are, I just want the best musician to be nominated & win an award.  If a woman or man wins, I just want the best nominee to win.

I agree any woman should have equal pay if a male is doing the same or similar job, I’m all for that.  I didn’t realize that the pay inequality was happening.  Equal pay should be a no brainer if you ask me!

Rock & metal music are far from dead, even though the Grammy Awards for those categories are not aired on TV.  How many Grammy awards has Lamb of God won?  Guess, I’ll wait……………………………..6 if not more.  The Grammy academy is of no use in promoting rock or metal with the awards for those categories.  “2 roads diverged in a yellow wood” if you want to make money you take the road most travelled.  If you want to attract possible fans to classical, rock, or metal you take the road less travelled.

There were 3 acts that REALLY caught my attention because they were SO good.  Janelle Monae, H.E.R., & Kacey Musgraves.

From what I can tell from “Big Wreck’s” Facebook page, they are nearing completion of their next album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Janelle Monae performed this song on the Grammy Awards.  I bought the album “Dirty Computer” on Tuesday.  She absolutely BLEW me away.  She’s like “Prince” 2.0!

The original cartoon was fantastic.  I’m anxious for the live action version!

 

ASCOT ROYALS   (More pop than rock)

I saw them open for “Big Wreck” in February 2017, AWESOME SHOW!  Unfortunately they never achieved success like I thought they might.  As soon as I got home I purchased their full album & their EP.  The EP was released a week before I saw them.  Another great band that didn’t make it big.

Music throughout the weekend.  “Dead Sara”, “Barenaked Ladies”, “Testament”, & “Matthew Good Band”

 

Friday ended with us watching “Hannah Gadspy” a Tasmanian comedienne.  It was more of a “Ted Talk” with humour added.  She spoke about what had gotten her to this point in her life, sexual abuse, 2 rapes, being a lesbian, coming out of the closet, etc.  Very entertaining.  She went on a rant at the end.  Kim was crying.  Lots of highs & lows throughout the show.  Really good show!  Quite a few “F – Bombs” throughout the show though.  None in this trailer though…

Saturday we went out in the afternoon Kim needed to take some photos for her photo class, dropped off Brewster & I.  She went for groceries.  I got this post started.  Kim came home with the groceries so I got moving & made my vegetable juice for the week.

Saturday evening we ordered in some Chinese food for supper & rented the movie “Boy Erased” about a son who is gay & his father is a pastor at a Christian Church.  The movie starts out with the son going to his first of 12 days at a conversion center.  I think this movie would be great if you also watch the movies “Red State” & “Spotlight”.  “Red State” could be difficult to watch with all of the language & violence.  “Boy Erased” is based on a true story.  I think every religious leader needs to wake up & see this movie.

I believe in God & consider myself a Christian. You know that part in the bible that says ‘…bring us your rich, poor, weak, & strong etc…’  Do we have to spell it out for others?  Do we need to adjust it to say “Everyone” including the LGBTQ community?  I really don’t care if you’re a part of a different religion, race, or sexuality or anything else.  Are you a good person?  If you are let’s hang out & be friends.

I was fired up watching that movie.  A lot of me commenting on the utter fear/stupidity of all of the homophobic characters.  It’s from 2018 and finishes saying there are still 700,000 conversion camps still in operation.  I don’t believe that sexuality is a choice, I believe it’s how you were born.  I didn’t choose to be straight, that’s how I was born.   Who makes gay people?  Straight people!

Woke up for lunch when Kim popped her head in the bedroom & said she was going to “Tim Horton’s”.  She’s done the laundry I believe, just eggs to hard boil & Kim wants to take some pictures in the house.  She left for “Tim Horton’s” & Brewster found that to be the perfect time to throw up twice once I made my way into the kitchen.  Poor guy, at least he knew to get off of his blanket & bed to throw up on the laminate floor.

 

Metal screaming is not easy.  You may not like it, but don’t say it’s easy!

 

I’ll believe it when I see it.  Does this mean Tool will start thinking about song ideas?

Just had to watch “Trivium” accept “Grammy Nominee Awards” of screen.  I’m assuming this is because they are a metal group, so they aren’t main stream music, ugh!

 

 

LYNYRD SKYNYRD

I will get to see them this year here in Regina!  I can’t wait!  When I was working I’d put on my iPod & just go.  One “Dream Theater” album “Systematic Chaos” was just released & “Lynyrd Skynyrd’s” double album of ‘Greatest Hits’ & I was good for 5 – 6 hours.  I’ll see them & my parents are anxious to see Randy Bachman.  I’ve been a ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ fan for a while, since 2006 or so.  All I have is their Greatest Hits album though.
