I was thinking to myself the other day. I must have been “The Best of What’s Around” for a third baseman when I played baseball. If you’re a back catcher, 2nd baseman, short stop or center fielder, hitting is a bonus, defense is usually the priority at those positions. If you’re plying any spot other then the ones mentioned or pitcher, you had better be able to hit. I couldn’t hit at all. Every game though I’d show up & look at the lineup for the game & 99% of the time it was Chris Fraser batting 9th, playing 3B.
I don’t know how good I was, but I wasn’t ever afraid of the ball. If the ball was hit in my direction, I’d attack it, like I was taught to. As long as it didn’t get passed me I was satisfied! I don’t remember ever diving for a ball, I did throw to 1B on the run though.
Knowing who was at bat always helped, more so knowing their batting tendencies & where the ball would be hit. I remember the lead off hitter for the Moose Jaw team would almost always hit a ground ball to me. Usually it was a guaranteed out. Bounce 2 or 3 times, smother the ball & toss him out at first base, roughly 127′ away.
I know exactly why people get bored watching baseball. It’s a physical reaction every pitch to the chess game going on in a players head. Everybody on defense has somewhere to be no matter where the ball is hit. When a hitter comes to the plate, you should be thinking of 8-10 different possibilities, and they change with each pitch.
The hitter & runner are thinking through different scenarios as well with each pitch. When I sit down to watch a ball game, I think along with the players. That’s why I watch as much Blue Jays baseball as possible!

Can’t say I’m much of a fan of ‘Faith No More’. I know 1 song that most people my age know.
