I fell asleep to “Muse” the album “Black Holes & Revelations”

I exercised to “David Bowie’s Greatest Hit’s” 20 songs on this album & it’s hard to pick one that stands out!

This week’s total for exercising! “Dim the lights……& here we go!!! 1650 crunches, 210 squats, 60 push ups, & 60 leg lifts.

Yep it’s on Facebook if you prefer.

This got longer than I had hoped. If you like you can blast down to the music news, read my condensed life story at the top here or read it all? It’s up to you?

I’m 36 years old & my birthday has passed already this year. On Sunday, February 3rd 2008, I was shoveling snow in our back yard. I stopped for the shortest & most painful headache I’ve ever experienced. My wife, the ow so FANTASTIC Kim saw me sitting down while holding/pressing the back of my head while grimacing.

I went to work on Monday after missing the previous week with the flu. Everything was fine on Monday, business as usual. Tuesday, February 5th 2008, 6 days after my 28th birthday, I went to work & felt fine. I worked at Impact Printers as a press operator. During my first or second job of the day I stopped to gather myself, something didn’t feel right. 2 of my coworkers came over & said I looked very pale. I felt fine physically. Seconds later I sat down on the side catwalk of the printing press. I then laid down (neither of those things ever happen). I shouted for one of my coworkers to call 911, I needed the EMT right away.

The last thing I remember was that Kim’s boss had brought her to Impact Printers since Kim & I had carpooled & I had the car with me. She came into the back of the ambulance & then I blacked out. I was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery as I had been diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer.

For the rest of 2008 I basically slept 23 hours a day, waking up only for pain medication & physiotherapy sessions.

I moved to the Wascana Rehabilitation Center for a more intense physiotherapy program after being declared cancer free by the doctors on December 31st 2008.

I moved to the WRC a few months into early 2009. For roughly 3.5 years of physio, occupational, & exercise therapy. I had a stint where I also did some music therapy! At some point I was up to 17 therapy sessions a week. I was discharged from WRC in late July of 2012. To this day I exercise for roughly an hour a day. My cancer experience was different than others who have had different types of cancer.

I don’t remember much if anything of 2008. Luckily I remember a few “good times” during that year and not the pain I was in, like when I had my first of 7 cortisone shots into my spine. I do remember getting to see my dog while in a sun room, family & friends coming to visit me, everybody making exceptions for Kim to stay with me in a very uncomfortable cot beside my bed the entire time we were sleeping in any hospital, calling for the paratransit bus to go to a concert in town. Kim’s world stopped for me, she didn’t have to do that for me but I’m glad she did. I didn’t want anybody’s life to stop because I was in a hospital.

At the age of 4 my parents put me in T ball. One practice & one game later I asked to be put in real baseball. From 4-17 years of age I played real baseball a few years with pitching machines, then real pitchers. I wasn’t great by any stretch of the imagination but I wasn’t terrible either.

My entire life was like that I didn’t practice or study much for anything, if I was good enough at something, I never really tried to be the best at it. I did however practice piano, flute, & studied for chemistry. I was just scraping by with a D- every year I took chemistry. Physics? I had no problem with physics or biology in high school.

I took 2 years of piano lessons while in elementary school. My parents bought a fancy electronic piano since we lived in an apartment when I was young & I could play it at a quiet volume. I grade 6 I joined the school band, playing flute until mid way through grade 10. The choir director needed more male voices. At this point I wasn’t really interested in playing anything in our high school band, but my father made me sign a contract that said I’d play flute until grade 10. A guy playing flute, yes I got a lot of flack for that from other students in high school. Choir was a way out for me & still counted for a credit on my transcript! It boosted my average as well, you got a 95% average if you never skipped a rehearsal that was twice a week over the lunch period. We got 15-20 minutes to eat our lunch then go to rehearsal.

After high school I went straight to the U of R & enrolled in engineering. I went to the U of R for 3 semesters. Engineering for 2 semesters, then a semester of random classes to figure out what I wanted to do exactly. I joined a rock cover band with 3 friends in engineering. I got my first guitar for my 21st birthday. I was already pegged as the lead singer in the 3 or 4 bands I joined, so I figured out how to play guitar. No formal lessons, books & online stuff. I was never fast enough on guitar to be the lead guitarist, so I played rhythm guitar & sang.

I couldn’t play baseball anymore since I threw out my arm when I was 17 playing on the high school team & the city team. So I picked up guitar, singing, & being in a band as a hobby. When the 4 of us started a band in university, we had a rule. If one of us wasn’t bleeding by the end of a show, we weren’t satisfied with our performance

Why am I telling this story again? There’s spring training baseball on TV this afternoon!!!!

Kim & I met at SIAST in Regina when I enrolled in September of 2001. We were just friends for almost a year. April 4th 2002 we had our first date. We went out for lunch at Boston Pizza. Shortly after we started dating, I played with our cover band to the biggest audience I had ever seen at “Beerfest” in the University put on by the Engineering students. 500 people, the place was packed. That’s likely the reason Kim calls me the human iPod we played about 30 cover songs & wrote 7 originals. I wrote 3 & our lead guitarist wrote 4. I grew to really hate 2 of the 3 songs I wrote. I wrote 1 acoustic song that I liked, the other 2 I couldn’t care less about.

I proposed to Kim in the spring of 2004 we were married May 7th, 2005. In all honesty she’s perfect but I’ a genius………………….wait…………………that came out wrong………….maybe it’s the other way around? Everything was fine until we hit that road bump in 2008. Nobody else can “fix me”, only I can & that’s how I got to where I am now. I workout 5 days a week, I’m in a wheelchair, & I listen to as much music as possible.

Kim & I watch a TON of TV, probably more than we should. When Kim comes home from work we watch Ellen that I record in the afternoon everyday. I watch Conan & Jimmy Fallon, I record them & watch them the next day. I like Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, James Corden, & Seth Myers. I just don’t have time to watch them. We, mostly me, watch a butt load of other stuff as well! I like John Oliver as well but HBO is $20/month for 3 channels, too much moola for that.

Here are a few of my favourite songs in no particular order.

OK, so it isn’t as short as I had hoped. I’ve been working on this throughout the week. Here’s your Pop Culture news. Thanks also for reading this blog. It means something to me?
