MUSIC DOCUMENTARIES

Tuesday, September 30th 2014

Pearl Jam released a documentary covering the band for 20 years. Very interesting to take a look inside a well oiled machine
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1417592/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Metallica had a documentary of the time Jason Newsted was leaving and Robert Trujillo joined while they had a psychologist in the studio with them after James Hetfield got sober in 2004. If you’re a fan of Metallica, you may not want to see their ugly side?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387412/?ref_=nv_sr_2

Of course “Foo Fighters: Back & Forth” documentary is great. If you’re not a fan of their music, turn it off when they gather in Dave Grohl’s garage to record the album “Wasting Light”. The documentary of course begins with “Nirvana” then all of the members that left, returned and replaced other members.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1853563/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

“Sound City” is a good one also. About an analog recording studio where many people recorded big name albums. Tom Petty, Neil Young, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac met Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, Nirvana’s “Nevermind”, Rick Springfield, etc. Dave Grohl wrote and directed the documentary and played mostly drums on the soundtrack.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2306745/?ref_=nv_sr_5

I’m sure there are more, this is the few that left a lasting impression on me.

MUSIC MOVIES

Monday, September 29th 2014

Friends do not let friends watch “Rock of Ages” with Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Debbie Gibson, etc. I’m just going to give this movie a pass. I tried watching it on Netflix a couple of months ago, got 1/3 or ½ way through it and had to stop. You would think a cast of big name actors & actresses would do a movie like this justice, not the case. I like Tom Cruise as an actor, I don’t agree with his Scientology belief but to each their own. I felt as though he in particular, as probably one of the biggest names in this movie, severally dropped the ball. His portrayal of a drunk, spaced out, womanizing rock star was a little too campy for me. Not really a roll he’s suited for, at all. At least he tried something out of the norm, and not make another Mission Impossible, Top Gun or Jerry McGuire. To this day Top Gun and the 1st Mission Impossible still hold up for me as does The Outsiders, the movie with a butt load of big names. Rock of Ages just did nothing for me. For a movie about music, I still go back to “Rockstar” with Jennifer Aniston, Mark Wahlberg, Myles Kennedy, Zakk Wylde, Jason Bonham, etc. “This is Spinal Tap” is an instant classic! Tenacious D in “The Pick of Destiny” was good for a chuckle, bombed at the box office though, they just figured their target demographic was mostly stoned and forgot about it? They were hopeful of a cult following on DVD.

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365830/?ref_=nv_sr_1 It’s rated R for a reason.

This is Spinal Tap http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088258/?ref_=nv_sr_5

Rock of Ages http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1336608/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Rockstar http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202470/?ref_=nv_sr_3 remember, this was rated R in 2001. Today, who knows? I guess it would still be rated R, with the lifestyle of a rock star.

I guess it all comes down to personal taste. I wouldn’t recommend “Rock of Ages” to anyone. A-list movie stars in a very disappointing movie. I’ll watch just about anything with Mark Wahlberg except a “Transformers” movie, I stopped watching those 15 minutes into the 2nd movie, the first one was AWESOME though!

“School of Rock” with Jack Black was pretty good I thought.

ME & MUSIC

Sunday, September 28th 2014

Music is my thing, I listen to it, I’ve sang it & I’ve played it. Music has always been a part of my 34+ year life. So yeah, it is a big deal as far as I’m concerned.

How did I get into music? I was in grade 2 in elementary school and in my 2nd and final year of piano lessons. I won 3rd place in a piano recital for playing this song….

Then I joined the school band and played flute…………..terribly! My dad made me sign a contract to stay with it until grade 10. I followed the rules but that wasn’t for me. I did get to go across Canada with band & then the choir. That’s why I don’t feel the need to leave Canada. I’ve seen most of it, but there is quite a bit I haven’t seen still!

The choir director, Stew, came to a band rehearsal looking for male voices. I said I’d give it a shot in grade 10 when he came. That became a rather hectic year at lunch times for me. If I wasn’t at a band rehearsal over lunch I was at a choir rehearsal. I guess it wasn’t too bad, but minimum 3 of 5 lunch breaks were 15 minutes to eat and 40 minutes in rehearsal? Something like that anyways. In grade 11 I quit the band, stayed in choir, auditioned for the chamber choir that rehearsed every Tuesday evening, after supper, tried out for our high school baseball team, made it as a back up 3rd baseman while playing on a city baseball team. Academically, grade 11 was my worst year in school, but I still had an average just over 80%. That year turned out to be my last year of baseball, my arm gave out and I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. 1 hit in 2 years, a single that royally screwed up my knee on in ’97. I didn’t tryout for anyone in ’98/grade 12. I was still in choir though, 2 of them. “Here’s my (high school) I sang in choir……”

Even when I graduated and started working at the Staples Call Center, I had to leave early one day to help out my brother and Jordan to sing 2 songs with them. They were in a “rock band camp”, where you’d learn some of the members favourite songs. Mitch picked 2 of them that they wanted me to sing for them at the finalé concert.

I think it was 2000 Rob, Dave, Rydell & I started our group in university. We were all in engineering at the time. We were pretty much a cover band with 7 original songs that we recorded over a weekend while I was house sitting for my grandparents before Rob & Rydell moved to Alberta. I’ve only played out of town twice. Rob mother was a Librarian at the Pense elementary school. We played at 2 of their dances. I think at most we knew 35 cover songs plus our 7 original songs. I found out quick that I didn’t like 2/3 songs I wrote. Lyrics were fine, the music REALLY sucked! This is still one of my favourite songs to play & now listen to until my left hand can move at a faster rate on the fret board……

I was always a singer first, I didn’t even own a guitar when we started the group. I didn’t get my first guitar until my 21st birthday, January 30th 2001. After our band had dissolved, I knew I wanted to continue being in a rock band. Playing to 500 people at beerfest was a kind of ego trip in 2002. I went to SIAST in September of 2001, just about a week before 9/11. After the band broke up, Corey and I would leave for a 2 hour lunch break in the Long & McQuade acoustic guitar room, just playing whatever song we both knew. I think it was in 2004 we practiced in a garage with Mitch on bass, Jordan on drums, Corey & I on guitar with me singing as usual Sometimes I got sick & tired of being the singer/frontman.

Once that group didn’t pan out, Dave, Corey & I played a few songs together in Corey and Jolene’s basement. Tyler Wanner came to a rehearsal too. That group dissolved quickly also, we were all pretty much into different music.

Then Mitch & Jordan started “Chemical Horizon”. Mitch is really good at guitar and Jordan plays 4/4 time beats very well. Mitch met Jerry a year younger than him in the washroom on the 3rd floor in Campbell Collegiate, high school when Mitch was in grade 12. Then they asked me to join. I’m 7 years older than Mitch & Jordan. That group stuck, it’s a lot of fun being in a band and you end up meeting bands people have never heard off that are REALLY good. Like these 2 groups, 1 local and 1 from Ontario….Ontario, “Flatlined”

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/guilty-of…/id278516992

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/deaf-leading-the-blind/id385897924

Local band Stillseed, 2 of them in Room 333
https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/reborn/id189563744

In the first group with Dave, Rob & Rydell we met a group called “The Special Guests” a really good pop band from B.C. I’ve got their album, I don’t think many others do?

I stayed with “Chemical Horizon”. Jordan moved to Ontario for school in 2006. I found Todd Bryanton on http://www.saskmetal.com as Mitch, Corey, Jay & I left to see Tool in Edmonton. Early on a Friday morning after a 10 hour evening shift that ended at 2 am. Less than a week after Jordan went to Ontario. “Chemical Horizon” fell apart when I went into the hospital on February 5th 2008. The last show we played was a benefit show on January 25th 2008.

Mitch & I never took guitar lessons, Mitch did take bass lessons.
He was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PCkvCPvDXk Then he switched to guitar. I wasn’t a great singer, but I was good enough. I was far more comfortable with a guitar in my hands and I always liked to throw one cover song into our shows in “Chemical Horizon”. Usually Foo Fighters or Big Wreck, those were always fun for me.

Foo Fighters new trailer for the HBO series!

“Jesterheads, it has come to our attention that some CDs of “Siren Charms” apparently has had an error on one track. We the label, Sony/RED in the US, are aware of this situation and these CDs have now already been replaced. For those of you who has purchased one of these CDs already, a replacement will be issued already within a few days. More info to come and we apologize for this technical error. Regards, Sony/RED – USA.” -In Flames facebook page.

I’m all for digital music. It’s far more difficult to buy a scratched file than scratch a CD. Plus CDs take up physical space. Digital files/mp3s don’t. I don’t think I’ll ever own a Terra bite of music, so I’m not worried. MP3s do sound different than vinyl albums or cassettes. Better or worse that’s up to you. iTunes is easy and convenient. It’s pricing is screwed up though. I’ve said this a few times, if you want to own your music, get it from iTunes, but LET THE ARTIST OR GROUP SET THE PRICE OF AN ALBUM OR SONG! MAKE IT BETWEEN $0-$20. I have roughly 600 CDs behind me averaging around the $25 mark. $20 wont break the bank? I’m not poor because of my addiction to music. I just have to watch what I spend on iTunes since it’s cheap and convenient. It does add up, when you sit in front of your computer on Christmas day for 3 hours and spend $235 in iTunes gift cards and have $0.35 left in your iTunes account after 3 hours.

SLEEPER ALBUMS

Friday, September 26th 2014

Sleeper albums, in that some albums have recently been released with little to no fanfare at all. The hidden gems. “Death from Above 1979” released an album in 2004, while on tour the 2 of them grew to hate each other. Once that tour was over, they quit. Now 10 years later they’re back together and released “The Physical World” it hit me with a solid punch to the gut! I’d never heard of them before, had no clue this was their 2nd album. Man it’s great though! It will be one of those albums I can’t stop listening to.

Also recently released was the debut album by “Royal Blood” very similar to DFA1979. Two guys from the UK. This album also came out of nowhere for me. Really good & an album I can’t stop listening to! Don’t be fooled when you search “Royal Blood” there’s a few groups on iTunes that use the same name. This album is self titled.

Those 2 albums are on constant repeat on whatever device I’m listening to. I’m still hung up on In Flames “Siren Charms” album & Queens of the Stone Age’s “…Like Clockwork” all while squeezing in any Foo Fighters album & Big Wreck. Also waiting for Foo Fighters, Into Eternity, Third Ion, & one of the Prince albums on Tuesday. Still listening to my brother’s Room 333 “Red Dragon” album available on iTunes.

I know the album’s done. Not released yet, I hope this tune makes the cut, might be a stand alone single?

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/red-dragon/id917967693

You wouldn’t believe me if I told you how many Prince albums I own……………13 full albums and 6 other songs.

Gotta love the classic Prince songs!

CANCER

Thursday, September 25th 2014

I got up at this time with zero sleep. Didn’t want to disturb Kim with me getting in & out of bed for just a burp that I thought might turn into me vomiting.

That’s why this site even exists in the first place. Not much music stuff today, if at all. I’m sick. First time I’ve thrown up since my vomiting 5 times a day in 2008 & 2009. Vomiting in the middle of the Southland Mall food court while drinking a Booster Juice is SO not cool! I highly don’t recommend it, to anyone.

Why did I come out of brain cancer like the biggest moron ever? I’m not about to hide behind “Ooohh, I had stage 4 brain cancer & 3 emergency brain surgeries”. That would be a lame & cowardly excuse! The real reason is this, I’M A CONTROL FREAK, plain & simple. I went through a situation that I had no control of. I don’t want to spin this as a poor me pity party. I was looking for someone or an entire group to blame. Even sleeping in the hospital for the majority of 2008 I remember a very vivid dream. In my dream I asked Kim to take over for a day or two, since I needed a break. This was in the hospital. I hadn’t even started the recovery/rehabilitation part of it, the really hard part.

I don’t like talking about my cancer, but it’s 4.5 years of Kim & my life as a married couple now just over 9 years in. That’s half of our marriage spent in 3 different hospitals. I think that number means more to Kim than I? For me, it feels like a lifetime ago.

I never really practiced anything. If I wasn’t half decent at it, then I just wouldn’t do it! I think at the age of 4, I went to one T-ball practice and one game and I asked my parents to put me in “real” baseball. If you knocked the hitting T down, you were automatically out. I thought that rule was terrible. I went to baseball. Pitching machines and a fielder next to it, to act as the pitcher on the field.

Now I’m 34+ and get to……………ugh………………practice EVERYTHING! I hate practicing standing, walking, stairs, cooking, drinking anything with carbonation, eating without coughing, even guitar, etc. It’s just not fun it’s “work”. The only thing I ever “worked” at was chemistry class. High school and University of Regina. Other than that I breezed through life. Sure I was teased & made fun of at school but that is SO far in the past. I couldn’t wait to graduate high school and get a fresh start. Truth be told, I didn’t want to be there in the first place really. That’s why I look so happy in the yearbook at the after grad party.

I’ll catch you tomorrow! I’m going to watch some TV & hopefully fall asleep on the couch as I sweat!
