STATE OF THE UNION, MUSIC THEN ME

Thursday, July 31st 2014

The music industry sucks, you HAVE to tour you’re butt off to just keep your head above water if you’re in a group post 2012. Thank you Napster and now iTunes. Cheap or free music is great for the consumer, and absolutely terrible for the musician(s). Think about it this way. Everybody eats and pays for groceries, right? I would assume the farmer, baker, the store, etc. All get paid for their job? Why wouldn’t they? You’re groceries aren’t free, so why do movies and music have to be?
ITunes, the musician(s) make nothing, CDs in store’s have dropped in price, recently to roughly $15, just so the stores can compete with iTunes. Yes, I use iTunes, in a love/hate way. Cheap music for me and pennies for the artist. Do you go out for supper? Do you dine and dash? Probably not. So why do you pay for food and beverages when you go out? You realize the Chef/artist is being paid. I say let the musician(s) set the price for music on iTunes. Some have made their millions and will give their music away if possible, newer bands/artists will charge somewhere near the cap of $22. That’s not an outrageous price. Right behind me are 600 CDs. Each album costs me $25 or less. How do people make money now on their music now as a signed musician(s)? Buy playing every where and any where, and selling CDs at a show, or merchandise! ITunes is brutal but convenient. Nobody has to get up and venture to a store. That’s the only good thing about it. Yes, I’m saying iTunes needs to raise the prices on their site or allow the musicians to set the price under $22!.

Me, I’m good and constantly improving. If you had told me that at the age of 34 I’d be married and will attend an annual condo meeting, I’d laugh and ask “Why?”. But that’s what happened last night. I feel pretty bad about lashing out on facebook about the errors made during the construction of our suite. There’s how many other people that are having issues as well. I get it now after the meeting last night. I’m putting the glass down. My Mother shared a photo on facebook saying roughly the following “A professor walked into a class with a half glass of water. The professor asked “Is this glass heavy at the moment?” The class replied “No”. “Will it be heavier in 30 minutes or an hour?” The class said “Yes”.” Moral of the story, put the glass down before it gets heavy.

http://www.spin.com/articles/foo-fighters-finish-eighth-album-butch-vig/?utm_source=spinfacebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spinfacebook I’d be leary of using the word “Epic” with any band! Although it’s an 8 song album as well as their longest playing album.

The Traveling Wilburys. Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, and Bob……….Bob Dylan. As the story (or many different stories) goes that I heard, They all just happened to be in the same town at the same time and figured they should hangout and record an album. They only have 1 double album. The first CD is darn good to me, the 2nd CD, not so much. Here’s a few songs from the 1st CD.

The Tragically Hip, you can’t get anymore Canadian than them. I like them but I’m not a typical Canadian who’s considered to drool at just the uttering of their name. I own 4 CDs out of 13 albums. They got together in’83 and released their S/T album in ’87. I own 4 of the earlier albums.
“Up to Here” released in ’89 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OKHwnkaU5Y

“Fully Completely” released in ’92 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhpezwGtDEg

“Day for Night” released in ’95 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aL4WCiaGBI

“Trouble at the Hen House” released in ’96 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE2joQsWXJg

I bought “Fully Completely” first then went backwards and bought “Up to Here”. I don’t listen to these albums on a regular basis, probably 3-4 times a year.

Damon Albarn of Blur & The Gorillaz writes new song for the movie Lucy
http://consequenceofsound.net/2014/07/it-was-too-hot-out-to-record-a-new-blur-album-so-damon-albarn-wrote-this-song-instead/

The first recording Tool made available to the public on CD. Released in ’92 “Opiate” 6 song EP. They have nothing available on iTunes.

This entire album is the only Tool album “Undertow” from ’93 that I just give Tool a pass on, I’m not a fan of this album. This was their first BIG hit though.

From the ’96 release “Aenima”. MULTIPLE F-BOMBS, COULD OFFEND ANYONE!!!

2000 release, limited edition with VHS “Salival” I had to download this for free after searching pawn shops in Saskatchewan and Alberta!

“Lateralus” album released 2001. First Tool album I bought!

“10,000 days” released in 2006. The only Tool song Kim enjoys, saw them in concert on this tour for the 1, 2, and 3 time.

Guitarist Adam Jones is/was a special effects artist. He over see’s ALL visual art, the live show as well. Their CD packaging is always very interesting!!! Hologram, 3D photos, Human Anatomy page by page and interesting drawings on the first 2 album “Opiate” and “Undertow”.

They haven’t released anything since 2006 due to a law suit involving a 2nd visual artist claiming the group stole some of his art. The band hopes to have this settled before the end of this year and are planing to get into the studio shortly after.

I went to Moose Jaw today 40 minutes west of Regina. Mom had ordered fruit from the fruit truck there, so Brewster and I went for a ride, and we had to stop at the Snow Hut for a black licorice milkshake, the first one I’ve had this year! There’s no point in going to Moose Jaw or Chamberlain without stopping at the Snow Hut or Twisted Sisters for a black licorice milkshake, for me anyways!

Why is the majority of stuff on TV a competition show? “American Idol”, The X Factor”, The Sing Off”, “The Voice”, “America’s Got Talent”, “Master Chef”, “Hell’s Kitchen”, “Cupcake Wars”, The Amazing Race”, “Survivor”, “So You Think You Can Dance”, “Dancing with the Stars”, etc. All subjective shows and most of them have a panel of “judges” that pretty much say “Here’s the top however many we’ve picked. So out of this top 20 that we’ve deemed suitable, you can vote now as to who you prefer.” “Well I was rooting for #22 but now I can’t, or someone down the block who didn’t get to be on the show!”

Why not go back to whoever getting famous for their craft, that other people found out about it and liked it. Do we really need to be spoon fed by whoever wins what?

I moved to 32 from 34 on the CFL page and missed preseason picks and the entire first week of the regular season. You get 2 points for regular season games 1 point for preseason, 3 for playoffs and I believe 4 for picking the Grey Cup winner, at least I think that’s how it works? Playoffs and the Grey Cup might be wrong? So 32nd out of 142!

Ted Nugent gets a warning! Why?
http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news/2014-07-28/ted-nugent-warned-shut-up-or-risk-your-future

This is exactly what I wanted to talk about today. I think as a society we’ve grown to be a little over sensitive. No I’m not about to go on a rampage pointing out various minor flaws in others like I did on the previous link, that is long gone now. I admit I was not a pleasant person in the least, I wasn’t even a fan of myself. All of that being said, if someone wants to act something like I did, just keep giving them more rope and tell yourself “This could be hilarious when whoever sits down to read what they’ve done. I don’t want to be that person ever again! I realize what I wrote publically and privately & it was terribly rude.

Here’s one example that happened to me and how people are becoming soft. A person no longer a “friend” of mine on facebook, “unliked” me. Weird sense of humour, swearing and complaining about Regina drivers. What did I say? 3 words & 3 words only “First world problems”. That was it, and I was instantly “unfriended” on facebook? Was that really over the line? I don’t think it was? Does that sound anything like an attack? What did I hear in response? “You pissed me off. I am the nicest person in the world”. Who gets to determine that? Not that individual! Friends of that person can say that.

So lighten up world, it could be worse! As long as you’re happy & healthy, you’ll be fine, maybe you’re going through a ruff patch, best advice I ever got was from my physiotherapist. “Are you going to worry about this in 20 years?” “Why worry about it now then, just a waste of energy”. As my father always tells me “Why bother getting upset?” Maybe laugh at yourself and not others, I do!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/25/breaking-bad-casting_n_5621207.html?ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000024

July Talk is AWESOME!!!

I have 1 of Tom Cochrane’s albums, one I grew up with and borrowed from my parents. Nostalgia for me! “Mad Mad World”. He’s Canadian and from Lynn Lake, Manitoba. He was born in May of 1953, and he did the original of this song on this album in 1991…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3sMjm9Eloo Not “Rascal Flats”!

He had a ton of big hits. Everyone in high school was into Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, any band involved with the “grunge” movement. At the time I was so opposed to that type of music. I guess it’s sort of a good thing. I like some stuff that people my age (34) might not know about. Like Tom Cochrane, The Eurythmics, my love of Tom Petty’s music, Dire Straits, The Edgar Winter Group, Prince, Counting Crows, B-52s, Tracy Chapman, etc. I heard “Frankenstein” by The Edgar Winter Group and it was instantly AWESOME! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOM4no5C8EU

Here’s some Tom Cochrane from the album I own and other albums afterwards…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg8o6SfgCk0 All 3 songs from the ’91 release of “Mad, Mad World”

These songs were on “Much Music”, Canada’s MTV, and radio as well.

Yeah, you had Tom Cochrane or Tom Cochrane & Red Rider, like Tom Petty or Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Neil Young or Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Matt Mays or Matt Mays & El Torpedo, etc.
