THE CARS

Friday, February 28th 2014

First off, I am sick of hearing people complain about the weather in Canada.   OK, whine about it, that’s fine.  I’ll be the jerk in the summer complaining about the heat, the second it reaches +20C I’ll start, deal?

The Cars formed in ’77 and called it a career in ’88.  They formed in ’77 then their self-titled debut album came out in ’78.  The lead singer, Ric Ocasek, became a producer later on he’s produced, Hole, Weezer, No Doubt, Nada Surf, and Bad Religion to name a few.

They released an album in 2011 called “Move Like This” never heard of it?  Me either until a few minutes ago.  Thank you google and iTunes!  I only have their Greatest Hits album and it’s great, it’s all that I need.  Here’s a single from “Move Like This”…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA4g8a6S2Bw Well they didn’t deviate from their sound much?  The older songs are much better.

I’m fine.  I got up at 5:50am, why?  I have no idea?  I think a few dark roast coffees are in order!

CANDLEBOX

Thursday, February 27th 2014

I have 3 of their albums free download then 2 of them from iTunes.  One of the 3 skips after the 3rd song.  2 albums are enough for me though.  They’re hard rock which I know isn’t everyone’s favourite.  So here’s a few songs if you like…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu3EuWg2qNI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OHRg6FV1r0

I don’t know the current laws on music, 6+ years ago I heard downloading free music was OK and Uploading was not allowed.  In the ’80s and when cassettes were all the rage everyone was allowed to trade tapes or make a mix tape.  Even in the ’90s you were allowed to copy a CD or create your own mix CD.  What happened?  Cassettes are gone, vinyl records will see a decrease in sales and CDs may become rare and then disappear?  EVERYTHING will be on the internet!  Music, books, magazines, TV, movies, EVERYTHING, etc.

Do you currently read books or do you read a book on a kindle?  Kindle will take over book sales eventually!  iTunes and Netflix will take over music, TV and movies soon all of this because of one guy, Sean Parker.  The guy that created Napster.  At least albums from iTunes are cheaper and don’t take up any physical space.  I have no problem buying a CD from a band that’s not rolling in money, or if there’s a bonus DVD or something bonus I can’t get on iTunes.  Metallica I don’t really care for, but if the day comes and I like one of their albums, I’m so not paying for it!  I deleted “Death Magnetic” listened to it twice and thought “No, not for me.”!

Did everyone see this?  AWESOME and HILARIOUS!

“REALITY” SHOWS

Wednesday, February 26th 2014

American Idol, The Voice, The X Factor, The Sing-off, and America’s Got Talent.  1st off why do singers go to AGT to compete against magicians, comedians, jugglers, dancers and whatever else there is there?  Wouldn’t that make “winning” more difficult than going to a singing show?  I like The Sing-off, it’s all acapella, they either sing as a choir or band with a lead vocalist.  They can sing the instrument parts and sound very good on the show, and the “judges” actually give constructive feedback.

For the most part I don’t agree with these shows, I like The Voice and The Sing-off, not the rest of them though.  In order from top to bottom I enjoy The Sing-off, The Voice, American Idol, AGT, The X Factor.  I mostly watch the first 2 shows.

Harry Connick Jr. is one of the best judges who have ever been on 1 of these shows, he could possibly save American Idol.  He’s usually right on point and says calls it when he sees it.  He even told one guy during the open auditions that he was wasting Harry’s time, his time and everyone else’ time!

Despite the fact that I enjoy these shows, this isn’t the way people became famous before.  Seems as though the second anybody turns of age, they say “I’m going straight to American Idol”.  Why weren’t you famous before, why not try doing the bar circuit first like other musicians did before you? Go out and just sing/play your songs, if they’re good people will pay attention!  Throw something on www.youtube.com see if it pans out for you?  Get the feedback from the people who watch it?

CANCER.  I’ve learned to accept the fact that I am in a wheelchair and have an iPatch over my left eye, that’s fine.  I’ll bust my butt to walk again and speak properly again, those I can fix.  My eye is the wild card.  It’s a nerve problem that has to fix itself, oh well.

Right now is the best I can be, who knows what will happen in the future?  Some people still have to accept my current state.  Nothing is going to change over night for me.  I exercise more than a lot of people do, because I have to, not because I want to.  I have to deal with the now, not the past or the future.  I’m alive!  Be thankful for that, because right now that’s who I am.  I wasn’t a jerk before and I’m not right now.  I was a jerk to many people coming out of my rehabilitation program, why I don’t know?  I’ve always been a negative person, but that was extreme.  SORRY!

TRIBUTE BANDS, FACEBOOK

Tuesday, February 25th 2014

Yep, facebook is changing again, so is gmail/google +.  Not everyone likes facebook and that’s oinkey donkey with me.  Google please stop.  Not everyone likes to be on a social networking site.  I think what facebook is doing has it’s pros and cons.  Every facebook message will go to the email address that people have used to sign up for facebook.  My email address is already out there and I get more spam than ever!  Now it will be in the info of everyone’s facebook page.  Meaning others will get more spam email as well.

I get tons of crap as it is in my email.  Gmail please stop changing.  I’m not about to join google +, I already use facebook if changes continue with gmail, I’m changing to a different email service.  Why, because I know some prefer email and some prefer facebook.

Tribute bands, they have their place. If you’ve seen the real band you could go to a tribute band, it’s completely different though.  I saw a Led Zeppelin tribute band in 2003, 2002, or 2004?  Great since I’m not old enough to have seen them in London in the ’70s.  I also saw a Pantera tribute band, since I got into Pantera around the time the guitarist died, Dimebag Darrell who was shot and killed on stage by a soldier who shot himself afterwards.  Corey had just gotten me into Pantera before that happened.  I saw a U2 tribute band after seeing the real U2 live in Calgary in 2001?  The tribute band was completely different.

3 of them dressed to look like the people they were imitating so I saw a shorter and fatter Bono, a shorter and fatter Edge, and a shorter and fatter Adam Clayton.  I couldn’t see the drummer, but I know he didn’t bother dressing up with all of the drums around him.

I have always liked U2.  From the first album “Boy”-”How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb”.  They were om the first tonight show hosted by Jimmy Fallon last Monday.  I don’t like the newer album or the single they’ve just released.  I already have 12 or so of their CDs, I’m good anyways.

BUSH, Formerly known as BUSHx

Monday, February 24th 2014

Sorry, my Tuesdays are busy, exercise and Kris from the ABI program comes here to play 2 or 3 games of cribbage with me.  Tomorrow some friends of ours are coming over from a near by town.  I just wanted to finish the “B” section off today and this caps off the “B” section.  I have “Boney M.” it’s just on my Christmas playlist with Nat King Cole, Harry Connick Jr. Twisted Sister, Andrea Boceli and a “Metal Christmas”.

Yes, the first band I was in with Rob, Dave and Rydell played the 3 big hits off of the 1st Bush “Sixteen Stone” album.  I did “Glycerine”, we all did “Machine Head” and “Comedown”.  After the 2nd album “Razorblade Suitcase” I thought they just disappeared and we’re releasing the odd single?  Boy was I wrong and I don’t say that often at least not when Kim’s within ear shot!

I bought the 2nd album recently.  I also bought the 2011 release “The Sea of Memories” which is a good rock album.

“Comedown”  Chris Messer always thought the bass line to this song sounded like a Bon Jovi song, it does!   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xS3GiUAvjJ8 the first song I learned to play & sing at the same time!

I am getting stronger with all of this @#$%&*%$@!@# exercise, I have never felt good afterwards, even in gym class in high school!  I have always felt tired and ready for a nap.

Dave you have to take me out for a drive, no one will let me. I except nothing less than lights and sirens going and that’s a firm request! That’s one of the perks of being in a wheelchair with one good eye and slow reflexes.  I always have Kim, my parents or Mitch to drive me around.  We always get the best parking spot.  I don’t have to drive downtown, and random strangers always hold the door open for me.  A wheelchair has it’s pros and cons.

BRYAN ADAMS

Monday, February 24th 2014

Yeah, the guy that did this for “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” with Kevin Costner as Robin Hood.  One of my 2 first CDs was Bryan Adam’s “Waking up the Neighbours” with that song on it, the other was C + C Music Factory.  Bah.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGoWtY_h4xo You know this song.  Especially if you’ve seen the movie or you’re Canadian like Bryan Adams is!  I only have his greatest hits now.  I had 2 of his CDs and I think I gave them to 1-800-George?

I saw him live during my time in the WRC.  Him with his acoustic guitar and a piano player at the formerly known as Center of the Arts.  Being in a wheelchair you’re pretty much guaranteed to be on the end of the first 6 rows there.

I didn’t realize how many great songs he had written and are mostly on the Greatest Hits album?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f06QZCVUHg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCBASt507WA

I’ll have to find this song and add it to the album I have on my iTunes and iPod…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W2jONIjrM0 Yes, the duet with Sporty Spice.  Why do I know that?

BRUNO MARS

Monday, February 24th 2014

Bruno Mars has the makings of being the most influential pop artist for the younger generation.  He’ll never reach the level of Michael Jackson, but if any generation doesn’t know who Michael Jackson is, I think they’d go straight to Bruno Mars.  I REALLY enjoy his music and yes I do think this song is HEAVILY influenced by The Police…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-fA-gBCkj0 I think it’s cool that you can tell what artist inspired another artist.  I like most of his songs, their was one on the first album that I could do without and skip it before I hear it…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLNYbs-hyUE This sounds to me like a boy band song.

Think about it though who did you enjoy more at the Super Bowl Half Time Show?  It was a hands down decision for me, Bruno Mars all the way for me.  I have nothing against the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  They’ve made 2 ALBUMS I enjoy and that song is from an album I don’t like other than the singles which are like false advertising to me.

Bruno Mars also wrote this huge hit…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKxodgpyGec

A few songs from Bruno’s  1st album…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe6CseQN7-g

His 2nd album has “Locked Out of Heaven” as the first song, here’s a few others.

He also does a “Billie Jean”/”Smells Like Teen Spirit” mash up.  I’ve shared enough www.youtube.com links on this post, it’s on www.youtube.com if you want to check it out, it’s really good and he only does it live

http://www.youtube.com/embed/Uv2fVaHSISw Thanks mom, HILARIOUS.  Misheard lyrics.

You know it’s cold out when your dog is pooping and his poop is steaming before he has it all the way out! -33C today.

What did I do this morning, exercises on my back only.  200 crunches and 50 leg lifts.  My thumb is still a bit sore, so exercise bike when Kim get’s home tonight.  She hasn’t gone to her boxersice class for quite some time so I won’t have to wait long.

We’re still on our juicing diet, fruit in the morning or eggs, lettuce wrap with turkey or beef deli meat, sun dried tomatoes , cheese and occasionally a strip of bacon, then a protein and a vegetable juice with lots of spinach!  There’s a few Saturdays we have frozen yogurt, ice cream or chocolate milk.  I was hovering around 200lbs in the WRC.  When I got cancer I was 262lbs and as of yesterday I’m 244lbs.  I’ve lost weight in my face, but my T-Shirts don’t fit around my belly right now.

BOB MARLEY

Sunday, February 23rd 2014

I only have a greatest hits called “Legend” reggae isn’t usually something I listen to very often. I don’t listen to it much more than once a year.  This is the only reggae album I have in my collection.  It has a lot of familiar songs on it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x59kS2AOrGM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffCmFDzaYyQ

A TON of songs you’ve probably heard before.  “Could this be love”, “Is this love”, “Buffalo Soldier, “Get up Stand up”, etc.

The entire album is on www.youtube.com if you like and it’s probably on iTunes as well.

Sure, I fell in the on suite bathroom yesterday.  I have a red spot on my forehead into my hair on the right side of my forehead.  It hurt a bit at the time, but I fall once in a while.  Nothing serious yet, thankfully.  In our old house I’d fall backwards trying to go over a small ridge from hard wood to laminate in the kitchen.  It’s always better to fall backwards, you can’t see what you might fall on.  The worst was a few years ago.

We were leaving Tony Romas, I was holding on to my left over chicken wings.  We got to the ramp to go to the parking lot.  Kim was pushing my chair, neither of us saw the ridge at the bottom of the ramp, from the sidewalk to the parking lot.  My chair stopped but I didn’t!  I fell face first and the parking lot won!  My glasses went flying a few feet away, my wings survived though!  I had blood on my nose, there’s still a red scar on the back of my right hand to, and (I think?) there was some blood on my forehead.  My parents had just pulled into the parking lot and saw me take a dive.  I had enough beer in me that nothing really hurt. It looked far worse than it was.  I had my chicken wings for lunch the next day, that’s the important part of the story!

BOB GELDOF

Saturday, February 22nd 2014

Who?  Bob Geldof! The guy that organized and sang with a choir of famous singers in the ’80s for “Live Aid”.  I only have one album of his that I borrowed from my father.  Bob Geldof is a bit calmer than Tom Petty even, it’s ’80s music and not the ’80s hair metal that I so despise.  Lumped in with Metallica and Guns n’ Roses two bands I want nothing to do with, music is subjective.  Van Halen wasn’t bad I guess.

The biggest singer he got to sing with for “Live Aid” was Peter Gabriel I think?  Also an unknown Bono of U2 at the time!  Here’s a few songs I have of his…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHhDITbjkb8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRxZAkTwNo4 I guess there was Sting and the dude from Duran Duran, Boy George, George Micheal, did I see Paul McCartney in there, etc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLEVqKYo944

Dad and I would listen to this or Ralph Benmergy when my father would drive me to piano lessons in the evenings.  I think I was in grade 1 and 2 in elementary school or 2 & 3?  I only took 2 years of piano.  I did get a bronze medal for playing this at a recital….

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zUUtf7gOe8 “Safety Dance” may have been better at the time?

BLUES TRAVELER

Saturday, February 22nd 2014

I’m not that big on them, I own two of their albums.  A live Double album and the studio album “Four”. It’s pretty much acoustic blues.  Almost everyone my age know’s this song…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ousaiByU1ko Yeah same 4 chords in the same order throughout the entire song G, C, Am, D on guitar all the way through.  This another highlight from that album for me anyways… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdz5kCaCRFM I really don’t know much about this group.  They’re not great or terrible somewhere in the middle.

I’m not a fan of Nickelback, but I’m sure when they released the album “The State” most of us thought “Cool, Rock music isn’t going away!  AWESOME!”  This song was big at the time and I think it’s 3 chords throughout..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Swxw2wuN_2k.

I still don’t mind this one song of theirs.  I thought they’d evolve with their music, they didn’t for me.  I even went to see them at the Regina arena, with Mitch and friends of mine from university.  Thornley opened for them if I remember correctly!  That’s what Ian Thornley did when Big Wreck broke up.  Thornley is totally different than Big Wreck, Nickelback even did an acoustic version of a Big Wreck song as a part of their encore….

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge3LQ1RTIe4   Nickelback’s version

Big Wreck’s studio version…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6ZkKzEyVRc I don’t really care for this song.  Big Wreck and Foo Fighters are still my favourite groups.  I don’t like every single song on their albums, just most of them!

If you know me personally, please use email to “talk” to me.  If you don’t know and are reading this as music reviews you can put a comment on the blog or anyone can send me a message on facebook without “friending” me or sending a “friend” request.  I’ll still be on facebook and follow as many people as possible and use my sometimes witty banter.  I’d just prefer email instead of a facebook message.
