THE AGE OF ELECTRIC

Yes, they’re Canadian, heck they’re from Saskatchewan.  Todd Kerns, Kurt Dahle, Ryan Dahle and I don’t know the bass player’s name?  Kurt, the drummer, and Ryan, now the guitar/singer for Limblifter are related to the Print Doctor who would fix printing presses at SIAST or Impact Printers, smaller presses.  I only have the first of 2 albums they released, the self-titled one with these 2 hits in Saskatchewan anyways…

I don’t have 2nd album, “Make a Pest a Pet” with this monster hit…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtG4FfXB7zk The album’s on iTunes.  I’ll have to take a listen/preview of it.  I like the first album so I might as well check out the other one.

These albums were released when I was in high school.  They remind me of a much simpler time, the ’90s.

I’ve got this great diploma from SIAST and a certificate from the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (GATF) here, that I can’t/don’t use for a job, they mean something else to me now.  I’ve met fantastic people in school and at the 2 print shops I’ve worked at.  And last but not least I met Kim!

That is one of the 3 or 4 reasons I’ve joined facebook, to find good people from my past.  Not everyone likes it or uses it.  That’s fine, I have to have an email address to use facebook, so I’ll use both like most people do!

I’ve never considered music a competition, but this was an easy pick for me!

I hadn’t planned on doing much yesterday other than going to my parents for dinner and pie-cake. Jam (raspberry) on the bottom, vanilla cake baked in a pie crust, then icing.  Thanks mom aka Barb Fraser!

The elevator was not working when we left or when we came home should be fixed soon if not already!  3 flights of stairs?  I can do it, just not very fast.

AUDIOSLAVE

Thursday, January 30th 2014

If you are using facebook for me and don’t want too, “unfriend” me or delete your account if you like, my email address is at the bottom of every blog post.  Drop me an email whenever if you like.  I’m not angry in the least and I know that face book isn’t for everyone!  There are a few people that joined to get updates from Kim on the “Strength for Chris” facebook page.  This is the stuff I’d be putting on that page, but lots of people don’t use facebook and prefer email that’s fine with me, totally up to you!

I assume young kids aren’t around to hear these links to songs that may include some foul language!

Yes, I own their 3 albums.  I kept thinking they would get better on the next release.  The second I heard the song “Cochise” on the radio I was in SIAST and got both Corey and Garret to come listen to the radio, none of us had heard it yet!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDMvN45sjo4 Honestly I haven’t listened to any of their albums in quite a while. They’re  not great or terrible, for me they’re in the middle, closer to a 3 or 4 out of 10.  I do like “Cochise” though and a few other songs.  If they get together I don’t think I’d rush to buy their album ASAP, if I’d buy it at all.

Chris Cornell went back and joined “Soundgarden” now if the others from “Audioslave” would get “Rage Against the Machine” together, all would be good.  I miss “R.A.T.M.”!  I enjoyed “King Animal” by Soundgarden although nothing from them could ever live up to “Badmotorfinger” with these “LEGEN………….wait for it……………DARY” songs on it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14r7y6rM6zA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyOC6LtvDZY One of my favourite songs by them!

There was an album before this “Badmotorfinger” called “Louder than Love” from ’89.  I have it but haven’t listened to it much at all.

You know, the album before they were a household name with the release of “Superunknown” with “Spoon man” on it.

Now if R.A.T.M. Could get together to make songs like this again…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4smim2MNvF8

For any Beyonce fans out there, there’s a Beyonce greatest hits on iTunes for $0.69 a song.  I think it’s her solo artist stuff?  She could drop the price to $0.02 and I wouldn’t buy it.  Not my style.

One more ‘A’ in my alphabetized band review, then the ‘B’ section.  Thanks for reading this we’ve got a long way to go!

It’s my birthday!  Of course I had chocolate milk on my Rice Krispies today!  Not in my coffee though EVER!  What do I put in my coffee, just coffee!  No milk, sugar or artificial sweetener with those ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Only 11 months until 2015, well close to it anyways.

I saw the musical, Phantom of the Opera, twice during elementary school.  The movie with Gerrard Butler as the phantom, is most likely where younger people know it from.  Of course the movie deviates from the musical.  I have an original musical CD from the Toronto cast but it brings me back to being a kid and freaking me out when the phantom made the chandelier drop and running around the theater to hide (on stage, and in the rafters off the stage)  I’m a wuss!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ej1zMxbhOO0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OumPsBI7wcc I’m 34 as of tomorrow and I still get goose bumps when I hear this!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77umP7IRxD4

Kim and I watched the movie in 2005 when we lived in our apartment after we were married.  Kim was all like “Why are we watching this?”  Sure it’s not for everyone, but it brings me back to being a kid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75BlzjqGVcc Robin Thicke was sued by Marvin Gaye’s estate for using similar music in his hit “Blurred Lines”, they settled out of court.  I’m sure Marvin Gaye has better songs that could have been sampled!  Like these three…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn4i8bAfnMY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPnZZTVp_2A I don’t know if this is an original or cover song?  I could check but I’m lazy!

Cancer wise I just have first world problems.  I could be dead or homeless, I’m not though!  The cabinet makers came to fix/replace our lazysusan.  In doing so they took a chunk out of the wall and scratched our laminate flooring.  We’ve been here a month only and it looks like we play indoor football or hockey here every night!

WHY DAVE GROHL IS CALLED “A GOD LIKE MUSICAL GENIUS”?

Tuesday, January 28th 2014

He has never taken a singing, guitar, bass or drum lesson.  His mother was a school teacher, his father was a professional flute player.  Dave Grohl dropped out of high school to join his favourite underground punk band “Scream”.  In school he played and took lessons for the trombone.  In “Scream” he started out as the 2nd guitar player.  Took over on drums since the drummer wasn’t so good.

A year before “Nevermind” was released he joined Nirvana.  The first popular release by Nirvana was the album “Bleach” with a different drummer.  Dave Grohl was the 5th drummer for Nirvana.  The first Foo Fighter album was released in 1995, all instruments and vocals done by Dave Grohl in a week.  During that time Tom Petty asked him to play drums with his band on Saturday Night Live.  He did, then got another call from Tom Petty to see if he would like to join the band permanently as the drummer?  Dave reluctantly opted to see if the Foo Fighters thing would work out and asked 3 others to join him.

Courtney Love-Cobain goes out of her way to publically bash Dave Grohl and assumes most songs are about her as a backhanded slap, in other words…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6UAYGxiRwU

Dave Grohl got $15,000,000 after Kurt Cobain took his own life.  I’m assuming Courtney Love got just as much, if not more?  So according to her, it’s Dave’s fault that her mother is homeless?  So what happened to her money?  Everything that has been released by Nirvana since Kurt’s suicide has been organized by Dave, Courtney and Krist.

Dave admits that things were awkward with him and Kurt.  There we’re the people who did drugs and the people who didn’t.  Kurt hung out with the people that did the drugs while Dave still hasn’t done drugs since high school.

Dave Grohl is not the best rock drummer in the world.  Ever heard of RUSH?  Neil Peart comes up with amazing drum patterns and solos!

Watch the “Back & Forth” documentary, this is all in the movie and lots more, I knew this stuff before I saw the movie in 2011, I did learn one thing though that I’ve purposely left out of this.

“Rock” bands, real rock bands, are disappearing fast, fact.  I never used to listen to metal!  It’s easier to find and sounds good to me.  I still go back to the rock I listened to in the ’90s.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMlIBXjiVMg In Flames music is written, mixed, mastered and artwork is underway. According their facebook page!  This is a song from one of their live shows, not sure if it’s a new track?  I still have older albums of theirs to listen to.

Last night Kim and I had a discussion.

Me: Kim where’s my cribbage board?

Kim: On top of the hutch

Me: What?  On Jaba de Hut?

Honestly I misheard what she said, I was looking for Jaba de Hut!  Why?  Wouldn’t that be cool if we lived with a Star Wars character?

THE GRAMMY AWARDS

Monday, January 27th 2014

Thank you for not much!  Especially running out of time and cutting off the final performance of two songs by Josh Homme (Q.O.T.S.A.), Dave Grohl, Mr. Nine Inch Nails aka Trent Reznor and Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac!  I’m glad Trent Reznor blew up on CBS on twitter saying “&^%^ YOU CBS”!  At least we saw the 2 living Beatles perform together.  Heck Sir Paul McCartney picked up 5 awards, one for his collaboration with Pat Smear, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBd9330h9kI

I’m not a fan of Nine Inch Nails, but I have a TON of respect for Trent Reznor.  Why was Metallica there? Are they even relevant anymore?  I’ve never enjoyed their music or personalities.  Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield sobered up in the documentary “Some Kind of Monster” then went “Where did Jason go?” (former bass player after Cliff Burton died in a tour bus accident).  Jason Newsted left because he was sick of putting up with Lars and James’ attitude, always being called the new guy and told don’t do this and don’t do that!  I would leave too.  Isn’t music supposed to be fun?  I guess not if you’re a “replacement” for 2 decades in Metallica!

Sure Mitch told me what to play, he made it better.  I can write lyrics, not very good at the music part though.  I took care of the lyrics, Mitch took care of the guitar parts, while Jerry and whoever was playing drums (Jordan or Todd, I didn’t get to play with the current drummer Chris Dimas) figured out what they would play, what would fit the song!  One day Mitch will get it on iTunes, all of the 3 albums.  “Chemical Horizon” and 2 “Room 333”, the second one being recorded at the moment!

In the end do awards really mean anything other than publicity for those who win or perform?  Can’t forget about Daft Punk winning an award for “Get Lucky” it’s a catchy song!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zX9BBgBmJ9U It was good to hear Pink performing as well!   Enough about The Grammy Awards!

This could be a BIG year for rock and metal.  The new “In Flames” album is in the mixing process, Foo Fighters are rumoured to be recording, “Queens of the Stone Age” will be recording in the fall, that should be released early 2015, if you like “Metallica” they’ve just released a live album or movie of them in Antarctica, there are photos of amps, guitars and stuff on Big Wreck’s facebook page, Rob Zombie is quite active on facebook at the moment, haven’t checked if it’s about a new album or not though?

Has anyone seen “Captain Phillips” based on a true story with Tom Hanks as Richard Phillips?  It’s quite a good movie!  I’d recommend it to anyone & everyone!  Excellent movie!  No love story or chick flick here!  I did sit through “Silver Lining Playbook” though, it had a few funny moments but in the end it’s a chick flick.  Still nowhere near as bad as “The #@$%&^%$ Notebook”

KEVIN SMITH

Sunday, January 26th 2014

He takes a ton of crap for being honest, brutally honest, about his life and writes/directs and acts in most of his movies.  I stopped listening to his SModcast after a year in the W.R.C.  Just about all he would talk about was chain smoking marijuana, masturbating and sex with his wife.  All while swearing through it all.  At least he was openly honest and didn’t hide anything.  It became too much for me and others to listen to the same thing for an hour almost everyday.  Here he is on CBC, the strombo show!   http://theocdcollective.com/arizona/ Yes, I enjoy his movies.  From the original “Clerks” to “Red State” I can’t find the “Jay & Silent Bob Super Groovy Cartoon Movie” anywhere.  I’ll keep looking though!  “Clerks III” has been announced too.

I’m not going to flood you with links from his films.  2014 will be 20 years since he’s been in the industry.  I liked “Jersey Girl”, his movie that bombed.  His movie “Zach and Miri Make a Porno” was his biggest money making movie in theaters.  $33,000,000 at the box office.   Yes, he funded his first movie, “Clerks” by maxing out credit cards to $27,000 filmed at night at the convenient store he worked at, at the time. He’s vulgar, swears a TON, does stuff I don’t need to hear about. He’s entitled to his lifestyle as long as he keeps releasing vulgar and hilarious movies!  Even “Jersey Girl” was a good flick, nothing rude or offensive in that movie.  It’s not a typical Kevin Smith movie that all of his fans were waiting for or expecting him to write, I liked it though!

Like him or not, he’s brutally honest.

Yesterday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecIzGmmX25U Some friends with kids came over for lunch.  My birthday is on Thursday, and I wanted to see my friends kids.  Not everyone could make it.  Thanks to Dave, Liz, Mia, Max, Corey, Jolene and Hannah. We ate lunch around 12:30 then some of the kids had to go home to nap.  “Uncle” Chris and “Auntie” Kim had to nap as well, and we didn’t really do anything.  Kim had the loveseat and I got the couch!  By 4pm we we’re asleep!  I think Corey and Jolene took little Hannah home at 3:30?

When I woke up I asked Kim what time it was?  She was already up and said it was 6:24, I thought she meant 6:24am on Sunday?  I was thinking “What a waste of a day” then she told me it was 6:24pm on Saturday!

Mia, was full of energy and made herself at home.  She’s been planning a sleepover with Kim, sounds like I’ll be in the spare room or on the couch that night!  Mia’s going to take my side of the king size bed to sleep with Kim and Brewster!

JUSTIN BIEBER

Friday, January 24th 2014

Let us all just leave him alone!  No, I’m not a fan of his music, I’m not his demographic.  He’s what 19 or 20, and he was arrested for doing something wrong?  What were you or I doing at his age?  Probably something stupid too.  He’s young and get’s shit on for acting like a typical late teen.  Like I said, “I’m not a fan of his music”, but leave him alone.

Most people aren’t thrown in to the spotlight at his age, so why does everyone expect him to be perfect? He has so much musical talent and that’s why we know his name, not because he was arrested.  We knew about him WAY before that happened. The biggest thing he’s done wrong is paying his friends to be around him as long as he hears “Yes” from everyone.  He SHOULD hear the word “NO” as well.  Once he grows up and hears “NO!” as many times as “Yes” he should be OK I would think and hope?

I put this on my facebook timeline yesterday.  We’ve all heard of Osama Bin Laden, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, The Uni bomber,  Jack the Ripper, Jeffrey Dahmer, etc.  Who knows the families of the victims, friends of the victims or the victims themselves?  Nobody, maybe some of the New Yorkers know the names of the 9/11 victims, but I would think that’s all?!  Why do the murders get their fame and the victims don’t, does that sound wrong to anyone else?

I get lazy!  Mondays occasionally and always on Fridays I just do my 200 crunches and 50-100 push ups.  I am getting stronger and stronger though!  I’m told I’ll never be able to walk again, I was also told I wouldn’t survive or beat my cancer! We’ll see what happens.
