MUSIC IN GENERAL

Monday, August 26th

Well, music is subjective.  You don’t need to like the same music as everyone else.  I’m not a fan of most 80s L.A. metal, surprise!  I’m not a fan of Metallica or Guns n’ Roses.  I listened to 104.9 The Wolf today for the first time in two months.  I heard a few songs that were new to me, if it’s on Regina’s “rock” station I’ve either heard it and bought it or never want to hear it again.  Nothing I heard was memorable.

Rydell recommended One Bad Son, which I heard on the radio, to me.  I listened to a different album by them and bought the majority of that album, why?  Because the singer sounds quite a bit like Axl Rose from “Axl and Friends” aka Guns n’ Roses.  One Bad Son from Saskatoon has been stuck at no.12 on the rock charts for 6 weeks, do I care?  No!  Not everyone will like every song by every artist.  I enjoy going to shows at the Exchange. I don’t go there as often as I used to.  I was there just about every two weeks on a weekend if there was a local band playing that I wanted to see.  It was me in my usual spot, behind the chained off mixing board with 1 Calgary beer all night.  Just soaking it all up. Now there’s all of these great shows I’d like to see but there’s always something conflicting with my busy schedule?

The release dates of those albums being released this year will be the rest of the music I’ll buy this year on iTunes and if a local group that I like releases a CD I’ll buy that actual CD.  Tomorrow with the release of Avenged Sevenfold and the new Trivium album being released October 15th, I’m a little weary of.  I’ve never listened to any Avenged Sevenfold and the upcoming release from Trivium sounds as though it was heavily influenced by producer David Draiman of the now defunct Disturbed.

I’m not a fan of every Foo Fighters song either, like this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eNBM17tkjI on their greatest hits album and played at every show I’ve been at. Other than that 1 song on their 3rd album, I can listen to the first 3 albums and only skip that song.  On the 4th album, One by One, the first 4 tracks and the last track I like.  On the 5th/double album I prefer the acoustic album far more than the rock album.  I prefer the rare B-Sides by them, and their cover songs of different artists like Prince’s “Darling Nikki”, Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar”, Sir Paul McCartney and Wings “Band on the Run” or their own “The Colour and The Shape” and “Iron and Stone” which I think may also be a cover tune?  Here’s “Band on the Run” Foo Fighters style.  Very close to the original version!

When was the last time I.M.E. came to Saskatchewan?  I saw them in Saskatoon on the “Scenery and Fish” tour with Edwin, and once here in Regina on the “Blue, Green, Orange” tour well over a decade ago.  “The Quicksilver Meat Dream” was released in 2004 and then they disappeared.  They got back together and toured sort of.  A popular 90s band from Ontario that conveniently skip the middle of Canada whenever possible it seems.

Kim and I have agreed not to get Christmas gifts for each other this year and save some cash for more important things, like paying back money from our parents and mortgage payments and condo fees.  We fully intend to get gifts for others though.  We won’t leave everyone “high and dry”!
